Anyone here do this? I'm kinda short and while I can manage my GS from the sidestand, I would really like to be able to take off from the centerstand safely. It might even become my standard method if I get it down well.
What's your experience with this, and how great is the posibility of dumping the bike using this method?

Yes Garry, that's what I'm talking about. Tall guys like you can manage easier with a fully laden bike on it's sidestand. I'd love to be able to just "climb" the bike while on it's centerstand and just take off. This thread is to see who does it and how successful they are with it...and also to hear some hints about their methods.

Dude, I love my bike, but never thought of it as "Tank-humping" !!!
Presently I do this a lot. I am somewhat short of leg, and though I only have an ST3s with the seat at 31.5 inches, it is difficult enough. One thing I do is feather the front break to keep the bike from getting away from me as the bike touches down. Parking on a convex surface complicates or otherwise uneven things a bit. Where I do the most parking is not conducive to taking off right away, so have not experimented with taking off with the engine running. As long as it does not go tits up is sure would look cool.

I've really never had the balls to just ride off the centerstand.... especially with a passenger on.
I'm not really tall (5'10"), but I ride with the seat in a high positon on my RT, so it's at 33.1" inches. I only have the balls of my foot on the ground. I just slide off the seat to the left and to give my left leg a little more leverage.

Tank humping.
Yeah, that's a pretty good description.

I just returned from my dentist on the bike in the rain. There I had parked in such a way so a center stand ride off would be possible.
When I returned to the bike, I put it into neutral, and with the motor running, had a PDA with the bike in order to try a drive off. It worked, but then again your crashage may vary. Also I don't think it would be wise to do this with a heavy or fully laden bike.
Also does anyone else have a problem with driving around with a boner after properly humping the tank? Not only that, but the poe poe were looking at me funny whilst I had sex with that thing.

I am having trouble picturing this? Perhaps a good thing...
Are you using your body to rock the bike off its centerstand? or what?

Not a GS, but with my Tiger and previous bikes you just need to sit down, give a clean jerk forward and that's it. It has nothing to do with your height. I recommend not bouncing your crotch off of the tank.
If you're in gear, you can let out the clutch as the stand comes up and ride-off w/o putting down a foot.
I have not had a lot of success with putting it in gear and 'riding' it off of the center stand as you need a fair bit of weight on my bike for the rear to give good contact while on the stand.
If you're going for extra points, you can set the stand w/o getting off, too. YMMV

I have never dumped the bike "tank humping". That siad, I rarely do it. I almost always just take it off the center stand while standing beside it.
Just more comfortable way of doing it for me.

Hi there!
I never bothered to "tank-hump" my RSL or GS off the c-stand: I just plunk it into first and ride straight off the c-stand!
This is much easier two-up when the back wheel is on the ground, btw.

I tank hump my GS off the c-stand all the time. As a previous poster said as it comes down let out the clutch and motor away without touching down the feet. That is how I get it down after fuel stops. Otherwise I get it down by standing next to it.

I used to do it on my r1150rt. I would use it to get it off the center stand and then I immediatly had to do a right turn.
