A good Bed and Breakfast in WV?
«
on:
May 21, 2008, 10:35:39 AM »
Hi folks. For my wife's birthday I am treating her (and me...) to a one night stay at a bed and breakfast. We are going to be riding down from Greencastle, PA (right on 81 at the MD/PA border).
I am looking for an enjoyable, but not too long ride into the roads of WV. I was leaning towards the Seneca Rocks area, but can't seem to figure out what a good B&B would be there.
Anyone have personal experience/recommendations?

if your heart is not set on a B-n-B, try looking up what cabins there may be. I have seen a few places on route 55, but alas I don't know any names and this may or may not be the road you'll be traveling.
Just a thought.

Thanks, and YES! I would def. go for a cabin. ... but Looking for something "nice" rather than rustic, and being private/secluded, or at least not next to 37 other cabins on a heavily traffic'd road.

Canaan Valley Resort has cabin rentals.
There is the town of Cabins (yes, that's the name) near Petersburg on 28/55. But that's a bunch of cabins along the road I think.
This option may be EXACTLY what you're looking for if you want a nice remote location: North Fork Mountain Inn that is actually in the middle of Smoke Hole Road:
http://www.northforkmtninn.com/index.php
EDIT: Wow. That place looks so nice I might have to take MY wife there.

Wow, I was actually looking at the northfork MT. Inn too. Smoke hole road is awesome. The only downside is they require two nights, and we were looking for just a sat. night to save some money. Still not ruling it out though.

How is the lodge at Canaan Valley? Is it a good place to stop in the area if you are traveling through the area

I've stayed at the lodge several times, including the STN National in 2006. It feels older and in some need of freshening up, but it's not bad. Just a basic hotel room in the middle of great riding. Not particularly cheap either ($100/night). The lodge is a campus-like layout with multiple small building around the main lodge.
If you're just passing through, there's really not much see. The resort has activities and stuff, but the lodge itself is pretty bland.

Thanks garry as I was going to ride down to WV this weekend and I might head down to the Marlinton Motor Inn as I had been there a few years back.

Steer clear of Yocum's Vacationland down at Seneca Rocks!! I spent a week on the road last summer and passed through Seneca Rocks. The only place with vacancy was Yocum's. It was a close to camping as you could come without a tent. I laid back on the bed and looked up only to see maybe a pound of bugs in the overhead light fixture.

If you want something a little different and very remote, I would reccomend Helvetia, WV home to The Hutte restaurant and bunk house as well as the Bee Keeper Inn.
Info here:
http://www.bbonline.com/wv/beekeeper/
It is very quaint town of Swiss descendants with literally one paved road in and one paved road out (south of Elkins and Buckhannon with access from Routes 219 or 20). The restaurant is a museum of antiques including the original town telephone switchboard. The food is all home made and delicious. No credit cards but cash and even personal checks accepted. No deposits on reservations needed, just your word. How cool is that!
I stayed in the bunkhouse over the restaurant with a couple of buddies once for like $35.00 a piece including breakfast. This is what the breakfast was like:
We came down stairs to the restaurant where we were greeted by the staff and told to sit where ever we want. They promply brought out a pot of hot coffee, a large glass of OJ, a large fresh fruit cup and a large plate of assorted fresh breads with home made jams and jellies. Just as we were saying to each other what a great breakfast this was, our server/hostess came over and said to us, "Now what do you boys want for breakfast?" She then promptly made us whatever we wanted provided that they had it in the kitchen, which they did! Best damn breakfast I ever had!! The dinner in the restaurant the night before was pretty good too.
I have been wanting to go back to stay at the B&B next door and am finally doing just that with my S/O in 2 weeks. $99.00 a night.
If you are looking for nightlife, this isn't the place to stay. But if you are looking for something really different where the only entertainment is what you make for your self, this is a place that will make a memory that will last a lifetime.

During my years as an avid rock climber (80s, 90s), we tried hard to avoid spending any money with Yocums. We would always go to Harpers general store (next door), stayed at other campgrounds (Forest Service one nearby) and not eat at their restaurant. They have a reputation for being greedy bastards. During the great flood of Nov 85 (most of the area under water, roads gone, etc), they were price gouging the relief workers badly. Fook 'em. I'll spend my money with the Harpers...

+2 on Helvetia!
Other option, if you want to be closer to other things, is the Graceland Inn located in Elkins, WV. My wife and I have run down there on weekends to stay the night a few times. The breakfasts are great!

We are booked! I just bought us a two night stay at the North fork mountain inn.
http://www.northforkmtninn.com/
This looked like a really classy place, at a great location (smoke hole road, Seneca Rocks.) A tad pricey, but I figured since her birthday treat coincides with our 2 year anniversary, makes her happy while providing an excellent moto-adventure, the money would be well worth the spending.
I'd love to try Helvetia sometime, perhaps that'll require another weekend down that way.
I'll be sure to post a report once we get back.
Thanks for all the input in this thread.

It's a very nice, twisty ride over to Helvetia and back from there. I just mapped it out on GoogleMaps: only 258 miles (not counting SHR), so figure about 275 total for the loop. Here's the giant map URL:

Sure, here's a nice (if wandering) 251 mile route to Seneca Rocks. I've ridden all those roads at least once, if not many times. The only one of any concern is "Town Creek Rd" from Flintstone to Oldtown. Expect some bumpy pavement and the occasional dirty corner. Overall a nice mix of roads from remote country stuff to fast sweepers/twisties on state highways:

Sure, here's a nice (if wandering) route there. Nice mix of roads from remote country stuff to fast sweepers/twisties on state highways:

I just stayed at the Homestead Inn in Petersburg, WV and it was very clean. Its not a bed and breakfast but they do have free wireless and a great 360 degree view. Can't beat it for 63/night.

We are booked! I just bought us a two night stay at the North fork mountain inn.

Nice find. I'm been on that road a ton of times and have never seen that place. It must be off the road a bit. Smoke Hole Road is one of the best little roads down there, great fun from end to end (despite what the map shows, the road does connect 28 with 220).
