Banff Run ‘07

September 6 - 9

Click here for a higher-res version

Updated 8/21/07

It’s been too long since we’ve had a good Canadian Run. Nothing against the Borscht Burn, but I’m talking some serious kilometers here! CDN originally planned this route in 2005 and I think it’s time to do it again.

Here is the idea: we meet up Thursday night in Whistler. Friday night we’re in Princeton. Saturday night in Nelson (oh yeah, baby Banana) and then Sunday we kick back in Banff. There are no group rides. This is purely a destination-drive Run. Ride your own pace and your own route with whomever you want. Meet up with your friends that night and enjoy a hearty meal and a drink or two. There is no registration: you’re responsible for your own accommodations, reservations and meals. The Banff Run is only a guideline and a good excuse to get the hell out of the house for one more ride before the winter rain and snow comes back.

Starting point of each day's ride with approximate day's mileage based on the map above:

Thursday (6th) – Pemberton (0)  TENTATIVE!!!
Suggested hotel: Holly Park Hostel
Suggested restaurant: ???

Friday (7th) – Apex (482km)

Bonus Stop: The Inn at Spences Bridge at noon!!
Suggested hotel: Double Diamond Hostel (more info on page 5, reply #107)
Suggested restaurant: Same

Saturday (8th) - Nelson (605km)  BOOK EARLY - THERE IS A CAR SHOW IN NELSON THAT WEEKEND!!!
Mention STN when you book your room at The Hume and get a better rate!
Suggested hotel: The Hume (Heritage) or The Dancing Bear
Suggested restaurant: Mike's Place (in the Hume) - 7pm

Sunday (9th) - Banff (515km)
Suggested hotel: Y Hostel
Suggested restaurant: Wild Bill's - 6:30pm

But can we please (notice the polite please) consider altering the route to go from New Denver to Kaslo then to Nelson Rolleyes

I'm pretty much doing the reverse of that route...leaving from Edmonton on Thursday June 28, kicking back for supper in Victoria Friday June 29th...going to take the Experienced Rider Course in Victoria that weekend then loop back through southern BC and back up to Edmonton the following week Smile

And if you actually read the post, then you'd see that I said "Ride your own pace and your own route with whomever you want." I don't care if you get there via Bella Coola - its the meeting place that night that determines what roads you want to take.  Razz  Bigok

I'm looking forward to some suggestions of where to stay in Princeton and Whistler. I know that we snagged some rooms in a hostel in Banff last time and that seemed to work out ok Shrug

There is a qute little drive up motel just past Princeton on the way to Keremeos ... It has a pool that always looks so inviting on those hot days when I drive by. I willl see if I can find the name. I stayed at another hotel in the downtown last summer but it was not great.

I have the original route in S&T format from 2004.

The only difference I have is that you go from Naksup to Kaslo and then down to Nelson.  It require a tad bit of back tracking so you can go from Nelson via the ferry to Creston but its like 5miles worth or something small like that.

If you would like the route I have just let me know.

As to if I would go or not....its a thought...but the WCRM 4.5 is going to be around that time.  If we were smart we could combine them. Smile

Just a suggestion, if you find Banff accommodation prices a bit steep, try Canmore. Only 12 min. away and much more reasonably priced.

I actually have the original route, but I was going for a non-back-tracking route this time. However, as I pointed out to Mr ABC, the route you take is up to you. Thanks for the offer!  Bigok

Banff Run ‘07  September 6 - 9

This is incomplete, as I can't get CDN to reply with help from his planning, and I haven't taken the time to fill in the blanks. Good memories and suggestions are appreciated!

Yes I am coming and will gladly help Ms. Dante Plan.

As for Nelson restaurant ideas, Some of the best & cheapest food in town is right there at the Hume. I could ask Ryan if they might put aside a meeting room, or reserve space somehere in either Mikes Place or the Library lounge. I would recommend Mikes Place. Nelson has quite a few good eating places, but they can get rather pricey. Most are pretty small so depending on the size of the group, this could be a problem. The Hume would be the one I recommend. I eat there often.

May I go ahead & speak to Ryan about some discount rates for us?

As for Banff. You are not going to find much for cheap accommodation this time of year. The Hostel will probably be the best bet. Everything else is going to be in the $125 and up range. Restaurant? Hmmm, nothing really sticks out. It's usually Earls for me.

Another addition to the route I might suggest would be to head down highway 31A to Kaslo then head into Nelson. A very cool road!

Of course! I anticipated eating within the Hume, as we did last year for the Banff-Run-That-Almost-Was, but I didn't put it down on the 'schedule'

As I assumed. Does anyone have the name of the hostel? I think that's the way we should go again this year. Easy to find, plenty of parking and with walking distance of the restaurant hub of "downtown" Banff Beerchug

I don't know much about Princeton,  but when we stayed in Penticton during the inaugural run,  the Apex resort hostel was great.   So deserted we all had our own rooms.   Beside the road up to the hostel is AWESOME !!!!  Darrel stayed there during the 2nd run just for the ride up.   An added bonus is while it can be really hot there at that time,  the resort is usually cool.

Did I mention the road up there being amazing fun?

I've been on that road as well and it is amazing. The plan is not set in stone... let us look into this option further... (calling for local help here!)

I just thought you wanted to post the original route.  I remember the deal on the Banff trip.  Do what you want, lets just meet at the places at the end of the day to chit chat and hang out.  Do that for like 5 days and have fun!

Here is the request I sent to the owner of the Hume. I am awaiting a reply.

Hi Ryan:

Hey we are just in the early stages of planning our Western Canadian ride on the Sport Touring Network. I have suggested the group stay & eat at the Hume of course.

http://www.sport-touring.net/forums/index.php/topic,2634.0.html

It’s too early to give you numbers, but we sometimes get 40+ people on this run. I anticipate the turnout to be at least 25 people. Can you give us room rates for Sat. Sept 8th?

Everyone would be booking their own accommodation & I would have them book under Sport Touring Network.

Also, I suggested that the group plan on dinner & frolic at Mikes place. I know a couple of years back the folks in Mike’s place set aside a table for us for dinner. Would this be possible to do again?

Oh, and you are of course invited.

Unless I'm mistaken, the owner of the Grand Hotel in Nelson is quite motorcycle friendly--the "RAT Raid" is headquartered there whenever they're in Nelson.  I could make inquiries, if anyone feels it necessary.

If there are those who want to "rough it," I might be able to accommodate a few--my house is small, and about 20 minutes outside Nelson, but there's floor space...

At this point in time, I don't know if I'll be able to do more than one leg of the ride (if that), but I'd certainly want to at least ride partway with some of the group as they pass through my neck o' the woods.

He rides a GS
