Should I sell the FJR and get a KLR?

Before we start, I should say that a 3rd bike is not an option.
I probably won't sell the Burgman, as it is so damned practical for all local riding.
So it is between the FJR and a KLR.
I posted
a poll
over in the polls forum asking the general STn population what they thought, but I'd like to get opinions from folks I've ridden with.

Yes.
You can go more places with a nicely set up KLR than you can with an FJR. Except over 100mph.

I've wondered the same myself. Can a KLR cruise happily all day at 75mph?
I'd keep that FJR unless there's a financial crisis. Just put some knobbies on it and take it off sweet jumps.

Hell...I couldn't keep up with you (on the burgman) and me on my ST...guess it isn't "the bike" that is the limitation.
Go for it! How much "high speed Strafing" can you do over the course of a year, anyway...

If you do want to sell the FJR, I might know of a home for it. Not my home, but another towards Elgin ways....
I was looking at the KLR as a second bike. The 08 KLR 650 looks like fun!!!

I have one of each and I don't want to part with either one. I have the 06 KLR all packed up to go to Enduraid right now but I don't want to leave in a thunder storm. Come on up and I'll let you ride the KLR. It's too light for the road and too heavy for off road but I love the utility of the thing. I strap a giant duffle on the bake with all my gear and go camping with it. The biggest problem is all the trails are in northern Wisconsin and it's painfull getting there on the KLR. It's a good bike for commuting, really sucks up bad streets well. Why not look at that new F800 GS from BMW. That looks like the hot ticket to me if you can afford it.

I've ridden a new KLR in the moutains north of LA. (rented one for a full day of riding up there)
Yes, it will go 75 all day. And the wind isn't bad either, much better than it was on my naked SV.
I'm just a bit worried that I'll miss the power of the mighty FJR. I don't really get on it that often, but when I do, it sure gets the heart thumping.

Jeremy, it is a very hard descision. You are welcome to borrow mine for a weekend, when I get back. When the KLR has no gear on it, it moves out just fine. I take it on coffee meets, and it is still plenty fast enough to have fun on. You will miss the hp of the FJR, the first time you try to pass a semi on the freeway. How out of the question is 3? I bought my bike for $3500.

Have a friend that right now is in Alaska with his '08 KLR.. Rode it up there from Canton Oh..
He added an aftermarket seat, luggage, and a skid plate...
He will probably have ridden over 10K before he gets back home..
He loves that KLR (Get an '08, bigger alternator)
You get that KLR off road, and you will never think about the FJR...

Ed, since Scott's gone now, and it appears you joined them on the 2700 mile trip, what did he and his wife think of the KLR two-up? Thanks for posting those pix.
Well, here's the update from The Purchasing Department:
We'll probably be having our first baby next year, and she says she doesn't to swapping FJR for KLR as she likes the FJR and thinks she will not like a KLR. So I'd have to lose both the Burgman and the FJR to get a KLR. I don't know about all that...
For now, there's no money, as we're scraping together airfare to go to Krakow, Poland and Vienna or Salzburg Austria in August. Just airfare alone is going to be $2800-3000. Crapola.
So I guess this is on hold until we either have a baby and I'm forced to go to one bike for monetary reasons or I am damn sure I'd rather have the KLR and am willing to tick off the wife a bit. I'm not that sure yet so I guess I'll sit tight and just stew over it.

So Ed, what would you do if you could only have two bikes, and one of them was the Burgman? KLR or FJR? I see you're quite into dirtbikes too. You've probably ridden KLRs.
I know you have an FJR now and that you love it, but if you couldn't have dirtbikes, would it be a KLR instead?

Sell the Yamadog and get the KLR
. I have kept my Bmw GS for the purpose of when I am riding with a group and want to peel off down a dirt road and have fun I can
. I rode the KLR and the Honda XL and the KLR is the best of those 2 hands down. So if I were you I would dump the FJR and get the KLR.

Thanks for the generous test ride offers fellas. I've ridden one of the new KLRs, I rented one for a day long, twisty, mountain ride north of LA. It was brilliant. Not too fast or too slow. The brakes were strong enough without seeming like they'd always be too much in the gravel.
I've also ridden a DL650, which was also brilliant. (Thanks bobwirka) The DL650 was at least 20% quicker than the KLR and had much stronger brakes. I had an SV650 a while back, so I was familiar with the engine. The DL has a nice tall 6th gear which the SV didn't have. The DL/SV gearbox is smoother than the KLR's. But for any kind of trail riding, I'd have to get the ABS version, because the brakes are so much stronger.
I guess I'll sit tight for a while, as I will really get "shafted" if I sell the FJR now.
