I'll let the pics do most of the talking since I'm typing one-handed.

Prepping for the ride - 11am departure on Friday, destination Asheville to meet a few ST.Ners for Q and Mex before riding on Saturday.

Slabbed down 77 to Fancy Gap to pick up the BRP.

After an hour on the BRP I took a break at this rest stop.

While there, a group of NC sport tourers stopped on their way home from Toronto

Trouble started about 5 minutes after my break when entering this mild left hander...notice the mystery trail of fluid

I thought the front wheel was sliding, but appears that the front break went bye bye...down I went

And it was such an easy turn...

Looks like the bike spun at least once while I rolled and tumbled.  We ended up next to each other

First...Praise to God for watching over me and my family.  It could have been much worse.

The first on scene was an EMT from Michigan with his wife and son.  She took the pics and their son helped block the sun while I waited for EMS.  I spent the evening back in Sparta, NC, first in the ER, then in Independance for the night at a wonderful little hotel.  My wife and B-I-L drove down 3 1/2 hours to Sparta and helped me get to the hotel.  The room had a King James translation bible laying open to Psalms 37 and my wife read to me v23-24...the wording from this translation is quite appropriate  Smile

Broken collar bone and scapula - had surgery this last Tuesday and my shoulder now sports some steel.  Still waiting on the official word about the bike, but it is most likely totaled.

I've been saying that my next bike would be a dual sport...just wasn't planning to replace the Bandit though  Sad

Bummer - though it seems you're pointed in the right direction.

So what was up with the surface? The fluid trail looks fairly narrow. Was there something else up?

When I started reading - and your foreshadowing "typing one handed" I saw the first pic and said - he's using two hands at the start...

The front wheel on the bandit - looks turned a bit more than it should be  Sad

So what exactly happened?  Brake line wear through or loose?  If you dont have full coverage insurance, you could probably recover a few bucks by going over to maximum-suzuki.com and parting out what's left on the Bandit, or selling it outright as a project bike, as long as the frame and motor are good.

Comprehensive with deductable...I think it's gone based on early reports which include gear box damage.  Nothing official yet.

Prayer said for a speedy recovery and a happy journey towards another bike for you.

Just curious being on the Parkway, were you going close to the speed limit?  Were there many patrol cars seen that day?

Prayers appreciated!

As far as I know I was doing the limit and enjoying the sights, since just coming off a break I didn't want to push things.  Traffic was light but 1st on the scene was within a couple of minutes of the crash...had not seen any patrols up to this time.

The curve that I had just exited was interesting due to a shear rock wall on the uphill, and a shear drop just over the little rock wall along the downhill side.  I believe someone referred to this as the "ice wall" because of winter formations.

Glad to hear that you weren't hurt worse!  Hope your recovery is speedy!

Can you tell us what the cause of the crash was?  I've reread the thread but could't figure it our.

It seems you were doing a reasonable speed (~45MPH) and when you braked for the mild left hander something in the front brake hydralic system failed and dumped brake fluid on the pavement.  Is this correct?

The line of fluid seems to be angling to the right -- but you were turning left?

Were you unable to make the turn at the speed you were going without a front brake???

Did something else (other than the front brake failure) cause the crash?

Best I can tell is that when the brake went out the bike stood up straight and by the time I had any lean going again, I was leaving the pavement (no traction at all).  In all of the replays it just doesn't make that much sense to me...I'm quite sure that my reaction was slow at best, and most likely the wrong reaction given the situation.  I was in tour mode at this point after having a leisurely rest stop and I believe my first thought was one of disbelief.

Paul, I just arrived home from the National and saw this thread.  I'm so sorry to hear about your off.  Entering a corner and finding that your brakes aren't working is a scary proposition.

Take care and heal up my friend.  Sheri and I will include you in our prayers.
