Dual Sport Weekend

When?  Friday October 31 – Sunday November 2, 2008
Where?  Sand Springs Campground near Morgantown, WV

http://www.sandspringscampground.com/

Saturday Ride Start:  "BFS" BP Convenience Store in Cheat Lake off Rt. 857.  Kickstands up and bikes rolling at 9AM, no later.

Agenda

Friday:  Ride to campground (various) and set up camp for the weekend.
Saturday:  Group Rides (see below for suggested route) followed by Group dinner at Archie's Lakehouse.
Sunday:  Group Breakfast and ride home (various).

Proposed Group Ride

200 Mile loop including the following:

•   Start out at gas stop and quick breakfast at the BP in Cheat Lake (has Gloria Jeans coffee shop).  Kickstands up and bikes rolling at 9AM, no later.
•   Lunch at Big Johns in Canaan
•   Dinner at Archie's Lakehouse on Cheat Lake (near campground)

•   Loop of the Cheat River Canyon
•   Stop at Blue Hole on the Cheat
•   Ride in an abandoned cave
•   Monongahela National Forest
•   Loop around Blackwater River Canyon (Public Routes 13 into Davis and 18 out of Thomas).

In order to get in all the excellent dirt roads, the route is about 40/60 paved verses dirt.  Paved roads are WV county routes with posted speed limits of no more than 55 MPH.

The loop is big bike friendly and contains mostly one-lane off road travel with no single track.  There are several stream crossings in the Mon National Forest Area, the deepest crossings are just more than peg deep.

Of course, people are welcome to ride wherever they wish on Saturday, but you won’t find a much better loop of dual sport roads in northern WV.  If the group is large, we’ll break it up.

Post up if you’re interested and we’ll start by coordinating campsites at Sand Springs.

UPDATE:  We have lot 49 reserved.  This lot is actually two lots costing about $47 per night.  Lot 49 accommodates up to 8 tents!  So, the total cost of the camping lot will be $94 for the two nights and we'll split it up among those who show up.

Trip to Big John's for lunch...

Looks like a lot of fun, R Doug, and I'd love to join in, but that's quite a haul from Oklahoma.

I'd be all over this, but I'd have to trailer my bike down and bike.  Way too far for the KLX.  Sad

Camp ground rules state you can only bring in what ever is towed by your vehicle or motrohome. And clearly states, no atv's or "motorbikes".  So how do you camp there?

I spoke with them today.  They mean non-street legal dirt bikes and the such.

So one could trailer in on Friday night, leave the truck and trailer and go riding outside the park?

My house is less than 10 miles from the camp, you're more than welcome to leave your truck and trailer there.   Thumbsup

Gary at Sandsprings told me we should reserve site 49 first.  It holds up to 8 tents!  The next best sites are 51 and 48.

If we only have 8 people, we can all stay on one campsite.   Thumbsup

PS.. with Mountainfest ( http://www.wvmountainfest.com/ ) in town this weekend, they were filled with people in for the bike rally.  So, they do allow street legal bikes (even those with loud pipes to save lives).   Bigsmile

If this place wasn't 7 hours from me I would load up the KLX, swap out the gearing back to stock and just ride there Friday.

I'm definitely interested, if I'm healed up I'm in for sure and I should be my doc says I am coming along...looks like a great ride and about my speed, I don't do well on the XR in tight trails but 2-track is my thing!

Wanna swap bikes for a while down there?  I've been considering adding a KLR, so we both can see if we like what the other has...

Sure, sounds good to me! By that time I'll have dropped a tooth (from 15 to 14) on the counter-sprocket...and if I get lucky maybe I'll have a Rekluse clutch installed.  Bigsmile
