Can anyone give me a quick overview of the differences/years produced of these models? These Ducs have recently appeared in my 'next bike' radar.
 
I see the ST3 on the website, but only a SR4? Help a Duc noob out, eh?

There are several variants of ST to consider.
 
ST2 - 2 valves per cylinder, 944cc and around 85hp. Made from 1997 to 2004 I believe.
ST4 - 4 valves per cylinder, a slightly detuned version of the 916 engine. Made from 1998 to around 2003 or 2004, 105hp.
ST4s - Same engine as the 996 superbike, but a straighter exhaust system meant that it actually made 117hp as against the 996's 112! Made from 2001 to 2004 I think. Came with Ohlins suspension as standard.
ST4s ABS - as per ST4s but with very well sorted ABS.
ST3 - 3 valves per cylinder, 992cc and 102hp. From 2004 on.
ST3s - As the ST3 but with ABS and Ohlins suspension.
All variants are fuel injected and water cooled.
 
Don't take any of the above as gospel, but that's as good as I can get it without spending far too long on research! All the ST series are great bikes. The ST2 has lower service costs, the 4 valvers higher. The ST3 is reckoned to be a good compromise between the two. The fairing design was changed in 2004, giving better weather protection and a better headlight.

Just a couple of clarifications....
ST2 made until 2003, ST3 was available in 2004. ST4S were made until 2005.

ST4S has Ohlins rear suspension only. The forks are fully adjustable Showa with TiN sliders. They also got the aluminum swingarm and Marchesini wheels. The St3Sabs inherited the same set-up.

The only thing that was changed was the headlight, headlight fairing, and windshield. The tank, side fairings, and tail fairings were not changed. You cannot remove the side fairings without first removing the dash panels, mirrors, and headlight fairing to get to them.....I was shocked that Ducati didn't redesign the overlapping of the headlight fairing. It is the worst part of the whole design.

Quite right DD. And yes, the way the fairing fits together is a real PITA. I hear that converting to DZUS fasteners cuts the fairing removal time by about half an hour if the mirror mount nuts are also changed to wingnuts. I could guarantee that I would drop either a nut or the spanner into the bowels of the fairing every time I took them off!

I can actually remove all the fairing on the bike in less than 30 minutes, now. The headlight fairing takes about 10 minutes. The Dzus conversion is fairly popular, but I just can't bring myself to cut up those expensive, factory fairings. This design has got to be one of the most assinine designs I've ever seen on a vehicle.....with the location of the '98 ST2 voltage regulator a close second.  EEK!

That's just the pic, I don't think there is any difference in the height. The ST3 and Multistrada are both on what seems to be a slightly raised area but the ST3 is not. I think the screen on the ST3 is higher though.

Is the ST3 for 07 only available in red ? or am I looking in the wrong place on the Ducati site? I thought in previous years they offered it in 3 color choices, pretty sure last year was gloss black, gray or red.
Appears this coming year you can get it in red or ....... red. I knew I should have grabbed a silver one in 05 but they did not offer ABS on the ST3 then.

Also changed were the dashboard (guages, etc) clip-ons (adjustable height) and the seat (best OEM seat on ANY bike I've had in 25 years of riding).
 
The 04+ models got these enhancements.

Are those the 'motolights' on the ST4? How well do they work?

Not my bike, but I do know they are PIAA lights. Bright as all hell, she rode behind me with those things for 10 days  Bigsmile
