In this article, the author refers to available stage 1 & 2 power upgrade kits directly from MG. I went to MG's site but don't see anything of the sort listed. Considering this is the only MG I would consider buying (even tho it's pretty underpowered compared to what I normally ride), I'd give it greater consideration if I knew more about the potential pwoer packages. Anybody know any greater info?

I read somewhere that factory hot rod parts were available.  I think a set of double high pipes ala Ducati S2 Monster in style with a new computer is one upgrade as is a set of new heads.  I wouldn't expect more than a 10 hp increase though.  The 1200 Sport I rode had roughly the same power as my Ballabio but it was smoother and didn't have that annoying dip in the powerband between 3k and 4k.  At least it didn't feel like it.  It would be a fun bike and I would probably never ride it to its fullest.  The gearboxes on teh new bikes is light years ahead of the one on the Ballabio and older V11s.  Suspension setup was nicer too.

You are barking up the wrong tree if you are worried about power on a Guzzi. And you are likely never to be satisfied with it if that is your critera.

Did you go to the main MG site (in Italy of course... Bigok) or your local distributor? Here in OZ the kits are available for the 1200sport, but its possible that in the US the importer didn't (..import). Nothing to stop you ordering from the factory direct except I bet the 8 valve motor will appear in the 1200sport soon.

No, went to the US site only. Saw one of these in a local dealership & it sure is a fetching ride to look at, especially in black. The low power & high cost deter me from giving it serious consideration tho. If I had more info, I might be tempted to give it a 2nd look.

People tend to give too much weight to horsepower figures.

They don't translate well into the real world of 30 to 80 mile per hour curves.

Yer just gonna hafta trust us. A Guzzi at 5000 rpm is a wholesome experience everyone should try at least once  Bigsmile

Nicely put.  In this world of silly low speed limits and dozing Camry drivers, how often do any of us get to travel faster than 80 mph?

Dave at Moto I thinks that despite the buzz over the 100 hp eight-valve engine for the Sport and Griso,  the four-valve engine might actually be nicer at real world speeds (Even though with only 85 hp or so it can barely get out of its own way).  Interesting.

Pardon me but exactly when do you need an engine that produces more than 85 hp?

Good God, man with only 85 ponies that 2 valve Griso will have a hard time drag racing a Hyundai.  You'll see Grisos over in the slow lane, with those reflective orange triangles on 'em, holding up traffic.
