I've really wanted an Aprilia for years (a futura or tuono.  decided the Futura would be better for me) and was waiting to see one in person before commiting to buying one (only read about them and seen pics)...
well after 3 years of waiting, I have yet to see ANY Aprilia in person so I figured, WTF and bought one from a guy in GA anyway.
It's an 01, well sorted, some nice mods and well cared for...
I haven't ridden it much yet (60 miles or so...it was a lonnnnnng drive to pick it up...I'm tired) but, so far, It's what I expected and hoped for.
The only suprise is, it's physically bigger than I expected (not a bad thing)...I always read it was bigger than a VFR, smaller than an FJR (I've owned both of those too).  It's closer to the FJR in size but about the weight of the VFR (how they did that, I'll never know)
So far - it's a great bike and all I thought it would be (and I had high hopes)
here's a pic!

Congrats on the bike.  I was wondering if you were going to get it.

Congrats & I hope you enjoy many miles on it.

Anxiously awaiting a ride report.  Since you've had an FJR, I'd like to hear your opinion on how they compare for sport-touring, in terms of distance, comfort, handling, capacity.  I typically ride a 1500 to 2000 mile 3 to 5 day weekend, and was wondering whether the Futura, because of it's lighter weight and trimmer lines, might actually be the better choice.

Congrats!

I've always liked the Futura, almost bought one when they came out, test rode one and kicked the tires for quiet awhile....but the local dealer sucked (and they ended up going out of business  Rolleyes ).  I've always wondered why Aprilia dropped that model.

I've owned a plethora of bikes in the past (Honda VTX1800, Honda VFR, Yamaha FJR1300, KTM 640E, Triumph Daytona, Triumph Bonneville <---still have it) for different moods and just always looking for "the one" or something different...ok, I'm a bike whore - anyway
here's my quick take on each bike:
02 Triumph Bonneville (cafed - love it, still have it, great raw bike experience - the best at what it is)
04 Triumph Daytona (loved it, the police didn't - had to get rid of it or lose my license)
03 Yamaha FJR (to big/bulky and japanese IMO wife no longer wnated to ride)
99 VFR (liked it, traded for the FJR 'cause I wanted a good 2 up w/hard bags)
02 VTX1800 (got out of the cruiser thing, didn't like being lumped with the HD crowd)
02 KTM 640E (loved it, got rid of it to keep me out of the hospital)

So, based on those references - here's my quick take on the Futura:

It's immediately comfortable...it'll take a little getting used to (since I have ridden the bonneville and Daytona most recently) but, not much at all...I figure 1/2 day of riding and it'll feel like home.

It sits & rides very italian...I can't explain that statement but, it just does.
It has alot of "character" compared to my other bikes...it sounds interesting, looks interesting and feels interesting.
It's bigger than expected (a little smaller than an FJR, some what bigger than a VFR) but feels alot smaller and lighter than the FJR when on the road...I'm curious to see it next to an FJR (size wise).

It's kind of odd, the bike looks really modern but when you start/idle it, it sounds kinda cruiser (glub glub glub glub glub)...instead of silky smooth (like an FJR or VFR)
Twist the wick though and it smooths right out...at cruise, you can hardly feel it running at all...on acceleration, it has some V-twin shake (cool!) until the revs get high...power/horse power is really decent (less power than the FJR but feels like more, probably because of weight) and the torque is monstrously fun - front wheel lifts easily with a solid twist of the wrist.
I don't know how they accomplished it but the bike weighs less than a VFR (I think) but is closer in size to the FJR (v-twin weight vs an I4 I guess)
Handling is immediate and easy - I was used to manhandling my Bonneville & Daytona in turns, no need on the futura.  it's very nimble, light & eager feeling (more so than the FJR about the same as a VFR)
Wind protection/control is top notch - best I've had by far.  The air is there but very smooth with absolutely zero buffeting - very pleased/suprised with that.

It's stunningly beautiful in person...the lines are killer IF you like hard edge styling (which I do)
The silver paint is actually an ice blue/silver that looks almost chrome from certain angles...wife says it's the prettiest bike she's ever seen (although I think she means the color).  My initial thoughts were to paint it but now that I see it in person, I think I'll leave it alone (for now  Smile )

Towing it home, I got no less than 5 thumbs up from people.

I have yet to see another in person.

You must come to Indy for the Moto GP - there will be no less than 30 of us  Bigok

Beautiful bike!  I've had mine for about 18 months now and the love affair just gets deeper.  My initial impressions were not as over-the-top as I expected when I first brought her home but every ride seems to reveal more great facets of the bike.  After several thousand miles and a long haul from Houston to Indiana, I don't see anything on the current market that could replace it.

Even as an '02 model, she garners a lot of attention at stop lights and fuel stops.  The miles you can put on this thing are frightening - the stock seat allows for hours in the saddle with no consequence.

Ride on!

I'm seriously considering picking one of these up next season...especially because of the price, and that they are now allowed into Canada!

My one concern is the engine. It being a v-twin, how smooth is it really? The ony twin I have ridden is my friends SV1000. I love the power and sound of the twin, but to me, I found it vibrated way too much...at idle as well as on the road Sad I guess I have this new thing now where I want as smooth an engine as possible. My ZZR has a pretty buzzy 4-cyl, but in comparison to the SV, it felt smooth as butter!

So how would you rate the smoothness compared to the VFR or FJR?

My other concern is fuel economy...I have heard these bikes get less than 150 miles per tank!  Crazy

acceleration and idle, I vibrates, no nice way to say it...but I like it.  Remids you you're on a BIKE

On the road it is very smooth - I like it better than the I4 because there is no buzzzzzzzzzzzz to it at all.

Fuel economy, I don't know yet but, 200miles between fill ups seem to be the norm.

I think the "reserve" is very conservative.

Vibration is a non-issue for me but I have to defer to zam70 for comparisons to the VFR and FJR.

Fuel economy for me averages about 42 mpg.  On my latest ride this past weekend I put almost 300 miles on the bike Saturday in twisties most of the time in fourth gear with a little cruising at subsonic speeds.  My reserve light came on at 198 miles and I had over a gallon left in the tank at top-off.  I figured that to be about 44 mpg.

Even hammering, I've never gone less than 170 miles before the reserve light grabs your attention.  Probably just from age but after that kind of time, I'm usually ready to stretch a little anyways.  Stock, the ergos are fine for me.  However, I'm going to experiment with a set of Gen-mar's this fall just to see how things shake out.

If you're getting less than 150 miles to the tank, you've got an issue.

Even though the bike is out of production, parts availability has not been an issue for me and there is a great support network on the interwebs.  Futura owners really stick together and if there is the rare issue that pops up outside of the routine glitches (that can and should be fixed preventatively), the community has a vast base of knowledge and are willing to help to any extent.

Is that Clint64's old bike? If so it is one of the first bikes brought in (IIRC). I went and looked at it prior to buying mine a few years back. You'll love it. I've never owned a bike that I just kept liking more and more as the miles go by.

I am glad it went to someone like you that will enjoy the bike.  Really wish the wife would have let me keep it. But one bike is the limit.

Putting a new rear tire on it this weekend (M6) so she's parked until then.

everything else great with the bike and I'm GLAD your wife wouldn't let you keep it heh heh...

nice talking to you...thanks for your insight and info!

You are right.  I usually got about 3-4k out of the M1s.  Sometimes much less if I was really getting on it.

I  Inlove my RST.  It is not perfect, but I'm fat.  Purchase April 4th and have put over 7,000 miles on so far.  Next week it gets its second set of tires since I purchased it.  Now if I can only not want to start making changes to the exhaust and fuel map to get a little more just because I can.

Welcome to Futura ownership!
I've had mine just over a year now.
But only in August did I find out what it's really capable of...
