I am heading to Vermont for a day ride from CT on monday. What are some good rt numbers too hit? I was thinking of slabbing it to Brattleboro then heading towards the green mountains and heading north as long as time permits. Any suggestions?.

Hey what's up skip, I always like seeing diff people from CT on STN. I've only been to VT once, and most of my riding was on 91. But if you want to get off 91 before Brattleboro and head to rt 8 up to rt 9, those are all nice roads. Rt 8 crossing into VT is a nice twisty bit, and 9 is long sweepers with a nice scenic view along the way.  From there, there seems to be a lot of decent roads, but you might encounter some dirt roads every now and again, I did at parts of rt 30 and rt 35.

Have a safe ride.

Route 12 between Woodstock and Montpelier is cool. Twisty, 50 MPH limit away from downtowns.

VT17 from Waitsfield towards Buel's Gore over the Appalachian Gap.  Be careful.
Bethel Mountain Rd. from Rochester to Bethel.
VT100 ... most of it.
VT9 ... most of it.
VT108 through Smuggler's Notch
Lincoln Gap Rd. if you like steep dirt roads
VT125 across the Greens
VT73 across the Greens

It's winter. I'm either skiing or brewing beer.

LON pretty much summed it up.  I would ride RT 8 up through MA.  Skip the slab, that 28 miles of straightness on 91 get's pretty boring.

RT 8 up to the Mohawk Train is fun.  Then maybe you can ride 91 to RT 9 in Brattleboro.  Ride that to RT 100. Stop at MT Snow and ride the Ski Lift if it's open that day.

Follow RT 100 to RT 103 and ride up Okemo.  There is a Mtn Road that brings you about .25 miles from the top.  There's a fire tower up there and you can see forever, weather pending.

It's do-able in a day.  My Uncle lives in Clearendon (Think Rutland area RT 4, Rt7, Rt103) and I left 8am visited for a few hours and got back 930pm.  I drove ~450 miles.  Comfortably on the Sprint ST.

Enjoy the ride, those roads are very nice.  Kinda making me jealous, but I'm going up to NH this weekend.  Maybe next weekend, it will be a toss up next to the Durham Fair.

Thanks! My rough draft did include Rt 103, Rt 100 Rt 25 or  Rt 11 depending on time. I will skip rt 8 because I rode it last week, We are leaving around 6:30 AM and  I would rather get to Vermont earlier then concentrate on getting as far north as time will allow on the good roads.

FYI - VT 125 got trashed from flood damage in late July or early August... was closed for a week or so, was still trashed when I rode it earlier this month. I doubt it will all get repaved before winter.

For a one day ride I don't think you can beat the Green Mountain Gap roads that Lon mentioned.  If you get up early, slab it up to I-89, then you have plenty of time to do Brandon, Appalachian and Bethel Mountain Gaps.  Long day but doable and you get the best of Vermont in one day.

Make sure you do RT116 in mass on the way over.

Blast 91N and get off around rt5.  That connects to 116 and heads west.  Very nice road.  30mph but its alot more fun at 75.  Smile

Damn I wish I saw this post before I left. Anyhow we had an awesome ride! I rode with my buddy mark on his 2002 ZZR 1200. we left at 6:30 and headed up to Brattleboro. Then we took rt 30 up to 100 and headed north on 100. scenery was awesome and  the plan was to take it  easy till it warmed up a little. we ended up taking it easy alot. Next up was 125 and it was still torn up with many dirt repair patches so we had to take it easy there . We stopped in Middlebury and had "brunch" then took rt 30 to 74 to the Ferry and crossed Champlain to ft Ticonderoga. then it was rt 22 down through NY to rt 23 and crossed back into Mass and over to rt 8. We had no traffic on rt 8 south so we turned it up to "adrenalin production speed" Smile and rocked the rest of rt 8 into Conn. What an awesome ride!! over 500 miles and very little traffic. we rode 12 hours and ten of them were in gorgeous mountain scenery. Ill do that ride again! Wink

This is an older post, but I thought someone looking to ride Vermont might stumble into it: Try: http://www.Motorcycle-Vermont.com for ride suggestions, maps and video of Vermont riding. There is also a Vermont specific forum there, though it looks like that's just getting started up.
