1st service at 1000 miles?

The owner's manual sez the first service for my bike (Dyna) is at 1K miles. Does this sound right? Most new bikes that first service is at 500 miles or so...

That is correct.

Yes, and I had the dealer do the first service on the big bike, but I did my first oil change on the Sportster at about 20 miles. That thing came out of the gate being ridden like it's MINE! (extrapolate at will)

Cool, thanks.
The plan is to let a dealer do the first, then I'll do the rest...

What does the first service entail?
Do you have a shop manual for the bike?

Not yet, it's coming.
You make a point. I should check it out and see what's up.

Change oil, primary fluid, adjust clutch cable, check primary chain, etc.
All this will take you one hour.
I wouldn't pay a Harley dealer.
Save your receipts and don't believe any bullshit the dealer tells you about voiding warranties, etc. Matter of fact, don't even mention it to them.

Newbie owner question... can I do all this on the side stand or do I need to get a bike lift/prop it up?

All on the side stand.
I would venture to guess the primary chain doesn't even need adjustment and the fluid changes are so freaking easy you will thank me later!
Unless there is something out of the ordinary involved in the service, take your money and buy some fringed leather chaps or something.

I'm not sure if the current Dyna has the horizontal oil filter on the front. If so, H-D sells a tool to make changing the filter easier and less messy. I never bought one and it was a PITA on my 01.

HD's placement of the oil filter is complete ass.
You will want a can of foaming degreaser and five minutes at the end of the job to clean up. It's just part of the deal. Srsly.
Oh, and you do it all on the sidestand except the re-filling of the primary which is done straight up. There is no filler; you pull the derby cover a shove a funnel end into whatever space you find.

Just make an oil river made of Alum foil. Problem solved.
