KLR update: after re-charging the battery and going through the electrics, I had noticed (yesterday, and the Alaska trip) I was getting intermittant connection at the start push button.
After putting the battery back in, had to wggle the button to start. Oh well,.. take it apart and check the contacts, and clean with some contact cleaner.

All of a sudden, the damn fans starts running. WTF  Headscratch  I hadn't even started the bike
since yesterday. So,..... my first guess is the fan relay. I'll check the local dealer to see if they have one. Besides,.... it's a third of the cost of a fan switch.  Crazy

Do what Zarly and I did coming back from Alaska when his thermosensor died: rig up a manual switch and bypass it completely. I think it cost us $5 (and that was Canadian $!)

So Carolyn, how did the KLR feel compared to your GS?

Oops, didn't see this til now.  My bad!

I can only really compare the two on-road right now, because I haven't taken the GS in as gnarly stuff as at Tahuya (hell, I haven't taken the *XT* in as gnarly stuff as at Tahuya Lol ).

Winner GS:
* At low, tight speeds, I definitely prefer the GS.  I don't know if its that it feels more stable at those speeds, or if I'm just more comfortable with the GS, or if I was just nervous because the KLR was a loaner bike.  But I found myself having trouble with U-turns on the KLR, both on and off road.
* The GS has a fuel light.   Wink Wink

Winner KLR:
* Above-70mph freeway riding was more comfortable on the KLR, and I think a lot of that had to do with the aftermarket windshield that ViffrKlr has on the bike.
* The gearing on the KLR is phenomonal.  I thought ViffrKlr must have tweaked it but he told me it was stock.  8mph felt just as stable and smooth as 70mph.

Tie:
* Graded dirt/packed gravel (the "easy" stuff at Tahuya) felt about the same on the KLR as it does on the GS. I didn't feel any more or less stable or comfy on the KLR on the 4x4 trails than I do on comparable roads on the GS.  I can do those kind of roads all day on either bike and have a huge smile on my face the whole time.

Surprise Write-In Vote:
* I really really really wished I'd had my XT225 at Tahuya.  While the KLR could clearly handle the things we were on (more so than *I* did, really), and the GS would have probably been about the same, the XT would have kicked ass and taken names.  Fundamentally, for me, that was the bike to have had on some of those roads...and on the other fun-looking ones we avoided because I would have killed myself on the KLR. Lol

I really expected the GS to be the winner there.   My day in the dirt is coming.  There are too many
Colorado trails not to have a dual.  Thanks BP.

Clearly I'll just have to take the GS out for a longer ride now that I got a nice tall windscreen for Christmas!  The stock whatever-that-is just isn't that great for the highway.
