Hello, all. I'm planning to burn up from Las Cruces back to home in northern Utah. I'm interested in taking 191 most of the way, but have never been on it south of Monticello, UT. Is it a decent route from Lordsburg up to Monticello? Looks desolate for some portions -- good fuel stops??

Have rode the Arizona portion from Clifton to Eagar (April- snow encountered) and it's a road not to be missed. Enjoy.

191 is a great ride. It used to be US 666, and was once known as "The Devil's Highway."
You'll be ok for fuel, as long as you don't try to stretch it foo far. No gas,
at all
, between Clifton and Alpine, Az. Fill up in Clifton and enjoy the twisties. Watch out for ice, snow and loose cinders up high f you're going anytime soon. In fact, the Clifton/Alpine stretch might be closed right about now (January 2010), due to snow.
There can be some long distances between gas stations on The Res., but, while there is gas in Ganado, Chinle and Many Farms, the places might not be open late.
More critical is the fact that once you get into UT, good beer is hard to find. But you know that. WBill

When I lived in AZ it was called the Anti-Christ Hwy as the shield was 666.
Fabulous road to ride, more fun S to N, but I enjoyed myself hugely going N to S. Watch for the wildlife as I had one near miss with a deer followed about an hour later with meeting a pack of four coyotes mid-corner.
Just a great road to ride.

I *tried* to ride it S to N in January of '08, but at a gas station a fella who had been gathering wood up there told me it was impassable. Will have to try again someday.
