This started out years ago as an IBMWR rally and has now grown to be any brand rally. I have been helping with this rally for 9 years and this will be year 14, so come on down, over or whichever for a great weekend of fun.

The Ride To Savannah will be held from Friday, December 5th through Sunday, December 7th on Tybee Island, Georgia. Since Sunday falls on the 7th, what better way to spend the day than a visit to the Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum - A Story of American Air Power during WW II.

Our home base motel is:

The Dunes Inn
1409 Butler Avenue
Tybee Island, GA  31328
N31 59.706  W80 50.907

Call now to make your reservations - 888/678-0763 or 912/786-4591.  You MUST mention BMW RALLY to get the special rate (working on price - will update future announcement).

The Friday night meeting place will still be at the same restaurant/bar as in previous years - Stingray's, next door to The Dunes.   http://www.stingraysontybee.com/

A Saturday ride is planned.  Meet at the Dunes parking lot at 10:00am with a full tank, ready to ride.  Downtown historic Savannah is about 20 miles from Tybee. This time of year the weather should be very nice and the squares will be decorated for Christmas.

Saturday night at 6pm we'll gather at the school cafeteria on Tybee Island for the world famous LOW COUNTRY BOIL...  fresh shrimp, corn, potatoes, sausage and onions all cooked in large pots, then put on the tables for your enjoyment.  Cost should be $20 depending upon the cost of the shrimp. This price will include beer, wine and soft drinks until they are gone.

No pins, no rally fee, you pay your own expenses and enjoy some fine company.

It is a good time.  We had 40 people last year, two as far away as Ohio.  Tell your riding buddies about it.

Been a couple years since I have been to Savannah and Tybee...
Was back in '04, lots of changes since I was there the first time.
Was stationed at Hunter AFB in the mid '60's, absolutely loved that
area...

I just made my reservation.

$59.95 a night on the front side, $49.95 a night on the back part of the motel.  This is a small motel so don't think it is a long walk from the front to the back  Lol

There used to be locals that would rent rooms on Wilmington Island - for those that don't know: Wilmington is like the second island from Tybee and alot less expensive.

Actually, Wilmington Island is the last island before Tybee. I don't known of any locals that rent rooms anymore.

Plus the motel is right next door to the bar/restuarant and only a mile from where the low country boil will be, so if you tend to imbibe, you sure don't want to be driving.  How much cheaper than $49 you wanna get   Bigsmile

Decembers a long way off for me to commit to for sure but it sounds like fun and a good way to
meet some fellow Georgians who like to sport tour without having to camp out and all that entails.

The worst part for me is knowing if I will be working or not and having to miss church on Sunday.

I am going to give it serious consideration though and like the idea of a good ride. I'm in Tucker if anyone
else wants to ride down together that would make it more interesting for me . The drive can be boring between  here and  Savannah.  Also I got to get my Tires done by then I don't want to go that far on marginal rubber. But hey it could happen I'm hoping for a chance to get to know more georgia riders in person

I just re read this post , had forgotten about it already and now Dec is not that far off. I don't see why the heck I can't go if the rooms are just 49. Might see if Ricks from Daytona wants to run up the coast and meet us all there on his new  Trumpet ST.

Sure I am going to do something .  I reckon I'll call in the AM and see if there are still rooms at that price.
Do you wan't to share a room or you got ladie's coming witcha ?  I could bring a gal buddy with me or if it is mostly die hard guy event I'm cool just to come myself.

Anyway email me if you wan't to get some details going on.

Just as a heads up , I just booked my room at the Dunes and all they had left was a kitchette on the ground floor so I got that , If anyone else wants a room there you might better call for one of the kitchenett left overs . I wanted a ground floor anyway so no biggie but the rate was 59 (normally 69) on that unit.

So anyways I guess I'm going for sure. If the weather forcast is crap for that weekend they have 72 hour cancellation policy so it's pretty much a done deal either way.

I am going to try and get my pal from daytona to come up and meet me there and go on the ride with us so he can crash with me. If he is not able to come I'll let yall know so if anyone else couldn't get a room there one can crash with me also. Hmm does that make sense. LOL

Anyway looking forward to meeting some more fellow sport tourers and some more gawga riders.

Stixx , What time do you want to leave?

I've posted this on the following:

http://georgiasportbike.com/showthread.php?t=13892

http://www.blokessportbike.com/showthread.php?t=36406

http://www.twtex.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34138

We've got a couple so far that's commited to ride leaving Friday 12-5-08 unless the weather suxxxs and there is a 72 hour conceallation on the rooms. I'm staying with family so we've got a secure place to park the bikes - maybe walking distance to some but I can taxi people back and forth at the end/beginning of the day of Friday night/Saturday. I'm not sure if I'm staying Sat night or not - but probally will.

29 makes more sense. You are referring to the one on 29 just before Rehoboth church going toward 285 I presume. That works for me . That should get us past the traffic and heading south right about the right time. With good time we should hit the hotel and Stingrays about dinner time or before. I have no idea how long it takes . Leaving at ten my GPS says you get there in five hours but I doubt that. Anyway I'm good to go at that time.

It's all you can eat/drink for a flat fee right?

Basically  Smile  We buy beer, wine and colas, plus the food for the number of people that have paid. The last few years the fee has been $20 and unless shrimp has gone sky high I don't see that price going up.

In the 9 years I have helped with this rally we have only run out of beer once, food, never and this is with people going back two or three times for more.  We aren't in this to make money, just to have a good time.  Bigok

Well its about an hour and half away and we should leave by ten from tucker on the Northeast side of the perimeter. We'd be coming down 675 and hitting Macon with no hold ups in about 11:30 or less. At least that's the plan so far.

I guess as time gets nearer, we ought to decide on a place to meet in Macon. I am partial to the Hooters off Riverside Drive.

It would be good if it worked out for lunch on I 16 to minimize the delay in getting on down there. Is there a particular exit that has close by fast food on 16 near Macon that you are aware of . I have a bluetooth phone on my GPS and someone could call me while we are under way but I don't wish to get into a contracted off excurson on the way down. Let's see what the Bandit says as well. A fuel stop , fast food type of thing would be less delay on the way down in my view.

Anyway I'm open to something like that FWIW

I just did Google Earth and there is a bunch of fast food at the first exit past the 75 / 16 split and it looked like spring street is where you land when you take that exit and it had subway which is quick and not too filling. Also Checkers Burger place and others . That would certainly be convenient and about 11:30 in the day which probably is not too early for lunch for those of us who get up early.

I will check and see about fuel there as well though I would not be needing any as yet there others might.

The Spring Stret exit looks good, got a Subway on the northside of the river and a BK Steakhouse on the other side.

Been a couple years since I have been to Savannah and Tybee...
Was back in '04, lots of changes since I was there the first time.
Was stationed at Hunter AFB in the mid '60's, absolutely loved that
area...

Everything sounds fine to me. The only thing I'm picky is what gas I put in the bike - I don't care about me - hence the rather large, large need for some new gear:). Way back when I tested the stations around Macon and all had quality gas except for one na dI think they pulled the tanks and redid it.

Let's ride.

Glad to see y'all are coming down and Frank I ride an SV also so they will have something to talk about  Lol

I don't care what any of these guys say about........ Oh, you meant our bikes!  Lol  Bigsmile

Thanks all for the invites. I'm still not sure if I will be able to come or not.  Probably will not know until after Thanksgiving.  We are going to Charlotte to visit the in laws.  Good people and great food, but we'll be staying in a hotel this time. Might be two or more nights, so I'm not sure if I'll have the money for a hotel for this trip.  We will see.  I'm going to try to go though. If anything, ride down early Saturday morning for the festivities.   Will post back and I'll try to check more often on here.  I've been looking for warmer riding gear and maybe some bags. Not to mention other "stuff" for the SV!  Wink  Plus, I just bought a 1991 RX7 Convertible with some running usues, so, I've been a bit wrapped up on the RX7 site.

BTW:  Are you on sv-portal.com?  I noticed your SV1000 S ends in a "T".  I've been thinking of turning mine into a Sport Tourer also.  What luggage did you go with?  Any mods?  Talk to man, talk to me!! Lol  You can PM me if you'd like.  We don't want to jack the thread!  Bigsmile  C'yaz

Take Care & Keep 'em Shiny Side Up!

I think I've seen you on before or at least read a post of yours.  Beautiful bike & a really nice setup.  Mine is the dark blue also.  They are sweet!  I may get some bags for mine in the next week or two, just depends on funds.   I'll be keeping an eye on this thread and will let youz know how it looks after Thanksgiving.  C'yaz for now

Well, register then, it's free and you don't get spammed on any of the ones below(a concern of mine). They're a great group of people and each has it's unique flavor.

If you decide not to register you can see me easily. I'll be on the Black Bandit w/ bags in Gray Joe Rocket w/ red/white helmet...or I might take that red spidi summer jacket just to look as good as you on that blue bandit one of yours:)...wait who said they had a blue one? I dunno....got to go look.

I'm definitely riding down on two ..........got the new front tire today and rode all day in the rain just to remember how to do it . LOL So far at the end of the day , and I mean all day except the hour he was putting the tire on, was on the road and in the wet.

I forgot how much fun rain riding was. I can not tell you how many times some female person with a cell phone in her driver side ear took my lane away and tried to kill me. How much fun can one guy have on a rainy day. Finally after dark I was headed for a martooni and a steak and sure enough an SUV full of Asia's finest ladies with, you guessed it , the driver talking on the phone. Just came right over like I wasn't there. Now when she was in back of me there is NO WAY she could miss this Beemer and when I get down there you all will see what I mean.

So I couldn't take it anymore got off the dang thing at the next light and went up to her door and explained the facts of life to her in plain terms. I assured her that my lane is not for sale either and she should go home and stop driving if she needs to talk that bad. LOL I could have said worse but she had a fish on the back and we Christians gotta stick together even when one of us clearing needs driving lessons. LOL

Anyway it was a hoot driving all day in Atlanta's madness and practicing the skills I will need if we get washed on coming back on Sunday. Either way I'm looking forward to making faces with the other entire Sport Touring crowd and with some serious shrimp who will give their all for me and my voracious appetite.

Just a head up for Saturday:

Savannah is having their annual BRIDGE RUN Saturday morning that goes across the Talmadge Bridge then come back across it.

STAY VERY FAR AWAY FROM THAT BRIDGE AND DOWNTOWN SAVANNAH SATURDAY MORNING
,unless you like getting stuck in traffic.

If you need direction to get around this Saturday morning mess just let me know.

You sure it ain't mild partly cloudy , followed by a HIMACANE ???  LOL . MY 72 hour reserve cutoff for Friday is Tuesday at Six PM so if snow is not on the ground here in Atlanta Thursday night I"m going to be at that QT on the QT at nine thirty and we're outa here. My buddy in Florida is getting antsy about the cold . Heck he's riding a Trumpet ST . I rode one last summer. Had a built in Heater. All you need with  them radiator bikes in winter is a pair of gloves and some leather britches. LOL

I'm having way too much fun being anal about my carry ons and fooling with all the gear for what will be the longest trip for me so far. That ain't saying much as this ain't no long trip but atlanta to asheville has been about the longest for me so far. I got a sis down in Brunswick, might have to make a pass by there Sunday for I head home. But we should ride back together as well if it works out for bofus.  Now that's unless I get lucky and some Savannah old money lovely ladie ropes me in and wants me to hang out for a few weeks with her. LOL

I know pipe down , pipe dreamer.  Crazy

Well I don' know 'bout de res of you cats, but I is X - Sighted about the Tybee run. Not that I have NOT had my challenges. First there are the ever changing weather reports then I needed a tire then today ASIF I needed any more encouragement, Some Alien ran in the back of my semi brandy new RT and had no driver’s license. That is in itself a good bar room or martini night story. Lovely child and one decent enough prevaricator and almost convinced me to not call the fuzz.

Well no accident reports no replacement parts and Beemer parts being what they art, the providential took charge and the local constabulary came by with the inevitable question. "Is there a problem here". LOL

So Imp over at ATL BMW and learning that bent muffler is only about a 1300 dollar project and the skinned up cases are not a problem since I just got done mixing the paint to paint the top box to match the now somewhat less than pristine factory jobbies.

OK I’m' going to spare you guys the drawn out story only because I'm two martini's into a recovery program from having bent my new baby and from being ever so thankful that in spite of being slammed a half dozen feet at zero to sixty in ten feet  with no scratches or broken bones, , what can I say.

Try THANKFULL< BLESSED, as it grateful NOT dead. So anyway, I don't mean to make more of this than it is except to say the Beige Beast is still able to drive the twenty miles for the check up. and the second time I was cross town at that dealer in one day as I’d already done a preflight for the weekend activities and had a couple of minor concerns I'll save for the Beemer forum

Whew. Now that is why I had a martini on a week night and why I'll stop for now and see if you guys are as pumped for the wet dry always interesting rally at Tybee. All I can say is them shrimp better be as advertised. LOL

Looking forward to faces

I had to get a tire today. Saw white little stips and went oh, oh, all my money just went towards heated gear. Oh well. I'm not riding alone so if no one can make it I geuss I will ahve to reevaluate it. I know if I go alone I'll end up with a ticket, so that's a big no no.

At least I will be there for the libations on Friday night. Looks like HH6 won't be on the pillion this weekend, she's got a function she has to attend on Saturday.

So you are riding down or not ? If you can see white strips , those are the cords man, don't even think of riding on a two day rally on those tires. One sharp rock and your down, man. Seriously friends don't let friends ride on the cords on tires. I got chewed out for going two more thousand miles on low TREAD and the cords were not even showing yet. After the chords show the thickness of that tire section is only a couple mm. Whoeee, man. You need a tire.

and the extreme tire wear came as a surprise to you how?? Headscratch

i am tentatively planning on riding down early sat. morning and doing the ride and dinner with yall.  not cemented yet.  ill have to figure out how to get through town out to tybee with out getting stuck in the talmadge bridge run traffic.  that kinda ruins my plans of taking 17 all the way down.

ideas anyone?

Jump on I95, come down to I 16, take I 16 East to I 516 E, exit 164A, when you get on I516 take the second exit  Exit #4, Hwy 17 and go left or east at the light then about 2 miles Victory Dr or Hwy 80 will bear off to your right.  Hwy 80 will take you all the way to Tybee Island.

Or, Come into town on I-16, get off on 37th street exit (exit 165) follow the ramp to the second light, turn left on 37th street. Proceed east on 37th Street until you get to Abercorn Street (SR 204)(about six blocks), turn right on Abercorn. Go approx 8 blocks to the next stoplight, Victory Drive. Turn left on Victory Drive (Hwy 80) Follow Hwy 80 until you get to Tybee. If you drive into the surf, you have gone too far!

ertman110,

Stixx already knows I got me a tire that day. Valuecycle in Conyers, GA is one heck of a cool shop. They are remodeling so they don't have anything in stock but they get it quick and a good service guy too. My gear came in three days during the holiday season? WOW. They had the rear tire mounted in 1/2 hour and key back in my hand.

I am supposed to have someone (HINT HINT) ride at least to Macon with me so I will be there and hopefully he (HINT HINT) will decide to go down to Tybee with us (HINT HINT).

God gives us challenges to see if we have the resolve to pursue our dreams.

I've had quite a few this week and now God has given me the green light.

We just got to convince HINT HINT that a bent muffler makes you look like a real tough worldly rider:D - heck seriously, that will test your resolve!

I am looking forward to this. Every letter I type I feel the tension slipping away.

Kickstands up at 9:30-10am tomorrow???(HINT HINT).

Sounds good bro, if we get away from the  QT by nine thirty that should be do-able to get there by eleven thirty . Now if you will email me at the one listed in my bio here, I'll email you back with my cell number and we can communicate that way. I have bluetooth and take the call on board assuming I have a signal which I should no problem. So I will also punch in the exit for the Zumo to remind me which one to take to meet up.

Later

If all else fails we'll meet at the Gas statioin on the right bank of that exit , if there is one, I forgot now what all was on Google earth at that exit but I'll look it up and refresh my mind then get back with one last post.

later still

Great fun guys, especially the group ride!! Wink

It was good to meet TJHess74, Cognosticator, Stixx and Ga-Bandit from the boards and all the rest of the BMW riders. Good fun Saturday night at the low country boil, I cannot wait to see the pictures.

But did find one drawback to wearingv hi-vis gear, law enforcement have no problem picking you out when you get nailed by radar (twice)!

Thanks to Jerry for inticing us all to make this years event. It was a good time and a great test for me personally to see how my gear stacked up to weather with was variable and we were so lucky to not have to deal with any rain at all. Considering the forecasts which preceeded the event that seems especially interesting.

All the folks that did the hard work to put the shrimp boil together , kudos. Not a small thing for sixty plus enthusiast. The Dunes was a good experience and the pub next door was good food and we all had huge fun. I am going to go through my pics in a few and see what if anything of merit I came up with . Post them later .

You should have said something. I could've hooked up the camera mount and video camera and taken still pictures or video (or both). I surely wish I had it pointing backwards coming from macon to Savannah...lol.

When  you click on the first two images in the album those are GaBandit and Ertman riding down the slab with yours truly. I was trying to hold the camera in my left hand , yes with gloves on at 80 mph, and not drop it or fall down my ownself and inadvertently managed to hit the vid button so they are not stills the first two are vids . Turn down your puter volume or you will go deaf with the wind  rush and pipes howling.
Some accidents are just plain fun. Enjoy.

I know . I shop at the Publix and load my cloth publix bags in my bags and top box and there is invariably some older guy or gal who'll walk up and start a conversation about the bike. Nice way to meet folks I reckon. At least it is promoting good opinions of "bikers" not that I'd ever admit to that name. LOL

Remind me to tell you about a certain gal who approached me at the Ace Hardware as I was attaching some gilhickie to the beast wearing full leather. I tell you it is a chick magnet to wear leather pants. This is all very new to me. LOL

Bass Pro Shops have the full set, plus a baseball cap on sale for $29.95, save some bucks and get a set.

ot collars"

I am not sure what ragland sleeves are, but my frogg toggs have a banded sleeve and bottom of the legs that hold tight around my wrist and ankles and will not ride up with wind.
