I bought a new used, only 240 miles, SV650 today Inlove. It does not have an owners manual and the Kawasaki shop of course did not have one. I will try to contact the original owner to get one. Until then can someone give me info on official break in recommendations and initial service requirements. Suggestions for new farkles and alternative break in procedures are welcome.

Just don't redline it and vary the RPMs,  After 240miles its pretty much already broken in although it will smooth out at around 1000 miles.  Be sure to change the oil and filter ASAP too.

Cool! I've got a yellow '02 naked myself. It's my main commute bike & backroads bomber.

First mods I did were a Targa Blast windscreen and a Sargent seat.  I also replaced the stock brake lines for some braided stainless ones, added an in-line fuel filter, swapped out the stock handlebars for a Suburban Machinery Type II, and put on some better rectangular mirrors.  Most recently I've added Givi trunk & rack, and got the sucky stock suspsension upgraded with some Progressive springs, RaceTech Gold Emulators, and a Progressive rear shock.

So what's the story on yours?  Why so few miles?

I still have to figure the picture thing out. Maybe tonight when I get home.

The story is that the guy bought it new during the gas crunch and never really used it. Then he had to have an ATV so he took a beating on trade in. The Kawasaki shop around here is not going to move a naked standard during this of year. They have a bit of a hard time selling standards around here even in the spring. This is cruiser and sport bike land.

Still looking for the official RPM and mileage requirements for breaking it in. It revs pretty good for a twin and I suspect that I tend to run the RPMs higher than I should with a new bike. $4100 out the door, not to shabby.

I can photo copy that page of the owners manual from my SV650 tonight...or you can just follow my previous advice.

Just tried to buy a service manual and the only thing I could find on Amazon was a Haynes Suzuki SV650 & SV650S  1999-2005 would a 2005 manual work for a 2006?

When looking for farkles and stuff what are the differences between years and generations?

From the general info section of the service manual...
Quote

BREAK-IN PROCEDURES

During manufacture only the best possible materials are used and all machined parts are finished to a very
high standard but it is still necessary to allow the moving parts to "BREAK-IN" before subjecting the engine
to maximum stresses . The future performance and reliability of the engine depends on the care and restraint
exercised during its early life . The general rules are as follows .

Keep to these break-in engine speed limits :
Initial 800 km ( 500 miles) : Below 5000 r/min
Up to 1 600 km (1 000 miles) : Below 8000 r/min
Over to 1 600 km (1 000 miles) : Below 10500 r/min

Upon reaching an odometer reading of 1 600 km (1 000 miles) you can subject the motorcycle to full throttle
operation. However, do not exceed 10 500 r/min at any time .

...and what Mr. Sunshine said is spot on in my book too.

Just don't redline it and vary the RPMs,  After 240miles its pretty much already broken in although it will smooth out at around 1000 miles.  Be sure to change the oil and filter ASAP too.

Major difference-
99-02: Carbs and such
03-current: Fuel injection

An 05 manual would work for an 06.

Great bike. I'm trying to talk my wife into buying one. Unfortunately, she has her heart set on a Victory 8-Ball. Lol

Thanks to all Thumbsup

The more I learn about the bike the better I like it. My wife may or not get it after it is broken in.

Has anybody ever been able to keep this bike under 5000 rpm during the first 500 miles? I make a half hearted effort to keep the RPM down without much success. I have been able to avoid redline, I think. Lol
