Getting back into bikes after a long time & have found an awesome book.  It's called "Proficient Motorcycling" by Hough.  Got at Barnes & Noble.  Great for either a beginner or someone getting back into the sport!!  Twofinger

Read the Hough book, both of them, and a third one too.  Liked them all.

Has anybody read "Stayin' Safe" by Lewis Grodsky?

Great books.  Plus 1!

I would recommend to all new riders "Proficient Motorcycling" and "More Proficient Motorcycling"

After those two, I would recommend...

Sport-Riding Techniques by Nick Ienatsch The guy who wrote a semi famous article called "The Pace".

I like the idea, but if your copy is anything like my copies, pages seem to fall out when the glue that holds them to the binder lets go.   I had to three hole punch mine and put it in a 3 ring binder.  LOL

If you're a bit of a propellor-head as I am, read Motorcycle Roadcraft: The Police Rider's Handbook
by Phillip Coyne, Bill Mayblin, and Penny Mares.  It's a UK motorcycle police training manual, complete with section quizzes. Thumbsup

An excellent read! Bigok  Everybody on 2 wheels should read this book!  Uhmmm... maybe everybody on FOUR WHEELS should read this book...

I have bought three copies, gave two to my riding buddies, they agreed, and passed them on to someone else.

This is a great idea!

Also, I just read the book "Smooth Riding, the Pridmore Way" by Reg Pridmore. Borrowed from a friend, and a pretty good read.

Well, if you haven't read it (or the equivalent) you ought not be allowed to post in GD.

You might like this one: http://ridinginthezone.com/index.html  Wink It comes out in January through Whitehorse Press.

I wrote this for folks just like you, who would rather ride than spend a whole lot of time reading. It also has a Video to help explain the concepts and techniques. You can see the video clip about countersteering on the web site.

I haven't seen KenC's book, of course, but I gotta say the best instructional book of any I've ever seen is, unfortunately, not about motorcycling--it is called "Kayak: The Animated Manual of Intermediate and Advanced Whitewater Technique" by William Nealy.  Like the name says, it's animated--basically, it's a comic book.  Nealy was a comic artist who was very involved in the whitewater paddling scene in the 70s and 80s, and his manual still has the best explanations of some rather complex dynamics I've ever seen.

I've read both of Hough's "Proficient Motorcycling" books, and I definitely recommend them; I've looked at a few others as well, and I own a copy of "Total Control" by Lee Parks, which has some good information in it.  However, no motorcycling technique book I've ever seen has the clarity, simplicity, and humour of Nealy's whitewater manual (hey, who can't read a comic book?).  One can only hope KenC's book comes close!

I'll have to check out the whitewater book. My wife is a whitewater nut.

I think my book is clear and concise, but I have to admit, it probably doesn't qualify as a book with much humor.

I like Lee Park's book as well as Hough's books, but they are a bit too long for many people. When it comes to riding techniques, I think it's best to get to the point without having to slog through too much unnecessary detail. Personally, I like to read the details, but many riders do not. As I say on the book's back cover "[Riding in the Zone] is written for those who would rather ride than read".

Definitely do so.  Even dated as it is, I still recommend it to anyone learning to paddle; the basics haven't changed much, and river dynamics haven't changed (although kayaking itself has changed hugely over the past couple of decades).

I may take a look at your book, Ken--will it be available over the counter anywhere, or only online?

It should be on the shelves of all the major book sellers, if not now, then very soon. It was just shipped this past week.

I failed to mention that it also comes with a DVD that supports the book and includes parking lot drills to try.

I say in members only we should do a sticky with  "STN Library"

Someone would have to maintain the first post with Name of book(s), and who has it.

I have Total Control which I'm reading now, but I'd prob be up for doing this if it was tracked that way. The only fee would be the $3.00 or $4.00 for media mail.

eh?
