With a sunny day and idle hands - off to southwest Wisconsin for some curves. Partway into the ride I figured the mission would be to document the signs.

I started in Rockford, heading out at 11:30a and ended up in Freeport where I parked the bike shortly after dark. About 300 miles with two wheels. There I hopped into the car and had a nice dinner and camaraderie with some fellow flyers. Back in Rockford, the airport (RFD) has a UPS sorting hub and was busy with seasonal traffic. One quick video of a 4-engined UPS plane overhead as it landed.

Overview map

Detail map of the valleys on the south side of the Wisconsin River

Here's the result of the Alphabet Soup

These signs were all recorded on this trip. I didn't go much out of my way either. I was on probably better than half of them!

Let's see...
Roads Represented: A, B, BB, C, D, E, F, FF, G, H, HH, I, ID, J, JG, JJ, K, KK, M, NN, P, PB, Q, S, T, U, W, X, Y, YZ, Z,
11, 18, 23, 59, 69, 78, 80, 92, 104, 130, 133, 151, 191

Roads that didn't make a showing: L, O, R, V. I did pass a "DD" sign but didn't grab a shot in time.

On Hwy 81 southeast of Broadhead WI

Getting closer to the river

Nice alphalt on most of the roads

The valley's are filled with farms

Roadside Nativity Scene

Representative view

Trail crossing
Anyone know the significance of the markings?

Lots of great roads and scenery in SW Wisconsin. Seems strange riding at night with Christmas lights out!

Lots of great roads in S.W. Wisconsin... Get over towards the Mississippi and take any of the Alphabet roads that head towards the
river.. I try to get up there every weekend in the summer.. Unless I am headed out to Colorado...

Let's hear it for global warming!

Nice pics, Jim.  Obviously you've abandoned Saran Wrap as your filth-screen for the camera.   Bigok

Great pics!!

The BMW MOA National rally will be in West Bend, WI in July.  I am planning to attend.  Will be my first time riding in WI.  Looking forward to it.  I have flown into Oshkosh for the EAA event several times as well as flying in the Mooney caravan from Madison to Oshkosh.  I have really enjoyed my encounters with the locals around Oshkosh and Madison.

Jim,

Excellent post.  I need to find time and get out more.  Did not watch the UPS landing though, but since I work right under the runway approach I see and hear planes land and take off all the time.  Can wait for the first weekend in June for the airshow.

very nice pics of very familiar places!  I remember seeing this mail box few times.  BTW interesting place to eat in the area - Lone Rock tri-county airport has a restaurant right on the tarmac - people pull up on planes to have a bite.

That's where I live, folks!  Well, Madison, but anytime I get a few spare hours, I head directly southwest into the farmland.  The road names take a while to get used to.

Good trout fishing in those valleys, too.
