A few years ago, BMWSportTouring.com had their annual UnRally at Gunnison.  They were able to get a pretty good group rate at the KOA on the west end of town.  The KOA had cabins as well as the expected tent sites.

I plan on attending.

Hello all,

Very new to this board as you can see by my lack of posts..I'm very interested in getting out to Colorado in June and I noticed the STN National set for the 16th and 17th.  Would a newbie like me be welcome?  I've ridden for 35 years so I'm not that type of noob...would be riding out from the great state of Nebraska.

Oh man, I love Nebraska.  Seriously though, Omaha is great.  One of my best friends is from there, and I almost accepted an offer at UP's corporate office.

Welcome to the board - stick around and post!

Not much to wright home to. Sorry, I had to drive thru it twice in the last two years. And Denver has 2 triumph and Ducati dealers. For the size of the city, thats impressive.

I was there in 2002 and again in '03. The '02 event was real exciting because the Hell's Angels decided to hold a meeting of its chapter presidents or whatever they call their leaders. Boy, talk about some interesting encounters with them and the LEO's from all over the region. Many BMWST riders would come out of their motels in the morning to find their bikes blocked in by the HA's bikes. They assigned goons to guard their bikes which meant bodily harm to anyone attempting to move a bike to get out and about on their bike.

Aside from that we had a great time and the roads are awesome. For those thinking about camping make sure you bring clothing and gear capable of keeping you warm as if you were winter camping. The Gunnison Valley gets cold at night even in the summer. I came out one July morning and found frost on my RT's seat. You'll want to layer your riding clothing so that you can peel it off as the day progresses.

The KOA campground is very nice and their Kampin Kabins are located near a stream.....the sound of the water will put you to sleep in minutes!

I'm cross-posting this so anyone who is curious will know the details....

I won't be able to make it to the ST.N national, so if I said otherwise earlier, it's now official.

REASON:  A co-worker is taking a vacation that really mucks up my timing.  I had planned a trip to Oregon that I really want to do.  My plan was to hit ST.N in CO and then go off to do Oregon.  That would have given me all the time I need for the trip without worrying about keeping to any more fixed schedule dates.  If I needed a extra day or two on the trip, no sweat.  Having to hit ST.N national at the end of the trip puts me under pressure to keep to a fixed schedule (exhausting, IMHO) or taking off early enough that I need not worry about not needing extra days during the trip.  The latter option could force me to take almost a whole third week away from the office where doing the ST.N national first would have kept it at about my norm of 2 weeks.

I also have at least 1 if not 2 rallies in WV at the end of May.  I would have as little as 1 week to "recoup" from these and prepare for the big trip to Oregon, and that's cutting it pretty tight.  Normally, I would have had an easy 3 weeks to do this based on my original plan.

I have also learned that next year's ST.N rally SHOULD be somewhere in the Appalachians...my back yard  Inlove .  So, I see no problem making it next year since it will be fairly local and easy to plan around.

Considering these factors, it would just be simpler to bail on this year and look forward to the ST.N national next year.

For those of you who helped me work out different ideas on what do to about this, I thank you.  I can safely say that my 2010 trip will likely focus on Colorado and the Ozarks. Wink
