Me too.

Great shots and seeing them made me think, perhaps interesting people subjects are the key to people shoots. Whereas snapshots you don't have the discretion (You have to take a shot of boring uncle Harry).

#2 is a nice couple that I would have preferred more depth of field to bring the chaps face in more focus. I wrestle that issue with multiple bikes or horses to try to get the entire group in focus and have the background blurred.

Excellent work.

Rags

PS

I now have 2 snoots (white & black) in my flash bag.

Yeah I keep making that mistake when one person is closer than the other.  I focus on the eyes of the main subject but then the other person is soft.  I have to remember to stop down the lens some on those shots and pick a focus point between the two subjects.  I don't know that stopping down could have easily been done on that photo #2 as the background was fairly close and might not have blurred much at f/5.6.  Every shot I took on Sunday was f/2.8.

Have you tried using the snoots yet?  Post up some pics, I think you'll be really pleased with the results.

I shot some kite surfers last week. I tried different apertures from f2.8 to f8.

I was testing subject separation from the background. The background here are hills (15 miles away) and the opposite shoreline (10 miles away)

The background gives the viewer a sense of the height of the surfer. Here are two examples:

f2.8 too little background; better at f8

f8 too much background; better at 2.8

The quest for perfection continues... for me it's a long journey  ...   Lol

Ok, first image that I actually like from my D300. I've been shooting rather indiscriminately just to get a feel for it overall.

The image is of one of my three fur coated turd generators; Mesa. I got up in her face with my Tokina 12-24mm f4 with the lens backed out to 12mm. On camera flash popped and I was using a full program mode because I just wanted to screw around at that point to see how it did.

Actually the little furbag can anticipate the shutter, flash or not and instinctively closes her eyes. Also, she is the "crazy" one. Out of her and her two siblings, she is the only one who tears off chasing things only she can see. Its pretty damned funny since she is a longhair and I have hardwood floors. I guess I could call it : "Fast and FURRYous: Chicago drift" by the way she power slides around corners without falling down or rolling.   Lol

I never know when Mesa is going ot do one of her stunt runs. It just happens. Once in a while she wil bounce off one of my legs if I'm in her way and she doesnt have time to do a course correction. Thats pretty funny too.
