Looking for some suggestions on first set of gear for the street.  Cost is an issue but safety is primary(obviously) Don't mind used.  Dont know what brands are good and which are not.  Thanks for any advise.

Don't know where you are, and it makes a difference. A budget would probably mean no leather, but textile or mesh? How hot does it get where you are and for how long?

You might want to start out at newenough.com, there's plenty to study up on and some reviews of the gear.

If you are willing to go with used gear to save money, that can be a great way to get a full set for not a lot of money.  Check the classifieds here and at http://www.advrider.com/forums/index.php

I am a fan of textile gear for its versatility in changing weather conditions, but leather is more durable in most crashes.

Get as close to a full set of gear as you can afford.  Even full set of expensive gear is cheaper than skin grafts.

+1  where you live means a lot on what you are going to want type of gear you will need.  I vote Textile jacket with lots of vents.  FieldSheer Adventure jacket works for me.  Also the Fieldsheer Mercury over-pants are pretty nice, but not very well vented for the hot days.
