Greetings Suzi owners of STN.  So I did some searching, but got a little impatient so if this is a re-post forgive me.  I've got a buddy that wants to get into riding, and between my convincing him of what to get and his thoughts as to what he wants in a bike, I've got him convinced that he needs an SV650N (and a trip to the BRC as well).  Of course that wouldn't have anything to do with the fact that I really want to ride one too...

So, here's what I need.  Since I'm helping him with some of the legwork and will be going with him to help look bikes over in general I was wondering what in particular I should watch for.  I've bought enough bikes before that I know the basics, (scratches, changes from stock, fluids, fork oil, etc.) but I'm looking for things that might tend to be common things to go wrong on SVs, or things that he should watch for that could go wrong after he gets one.  At the moment we're looking at 650Ns in particular since he likes the look more and the bars are higher, and I would imagine probably a gen 1 since we'd like to keep the price around $3500 or less.  I'm sure he wouldn't be against a gen 2 if one comes by for the right price though.  Thanks in advance for the info everyone.

I've had several regulator/rectifiers that I replaced over the past 70,000 miles.  Other than that... Headscratch  Hmm...  Headscratch Well, I replaced my battery once.  Oh, and I've replaced fork seals a few times because I was too dumb to clean the hard bugs off.  Other than that not much goes wrong with them.  Mine has lived a good life.  It is run hard but cared for well.  I still flog the pee out of it and it still runs like it did when it had only a few thousand miles on it.  A lot of the problem with the bike is the initial cheap components.  I replaced the rear with Ohlins, did emulators and oil in the forks, changed the lines to SS with HH pads, added a windscreen and hard top case and called it good.  It has had a TBR exhaust since about 7000 miles and a scottoiler for a few thousand that made life much easier.
