Last spring when I was there I did look at that road and thought.... is it really a short cut to where I want to go?

Frank and Huron52,

I had the (mis)fortune of taking that road to the right from the top of Hyner years ago on a '84 GPz1100. Way before anyone dreamt of GPS. IF and thats a big if... you chose all the correct turns at the intersections you happened upon.. (all dirt roads) you can come out up on Rt 44 near Haneyville, and dismount to kiss the macadam.  If you make just one wrong turn... Like I did.. you can end up on unimproved goat trails that all lead mostly south back down towards the River keeping you from civilization... I'll never forget the look of the people when I broke out of the woods on this trail, into their deer camp and asked them how do I get back to macadam roads?... If memory serves me, I was on Sugar Camp Road down to Rattlesnake Road.. Once I got off the beaten path.. the road I was on went downhill... with a few tabletop drop-offs.. preventing me from turning around and going back the other way..

It was an Adventure!

I was down in there for hours, getting low on fuel until I found those people and asked for directions.. which were lengthy.. finally hitting Rt44 and coasting down the mountain to Waterville for fuel.. I was WAY late getting home that day, and caught major sh*t for it.  Since then I've sorta stayed away from that area on street bikes, but have been up there with the old enduros and my 46 Willys CJ2A. Garmins wont help you with road conditions.. Wink

Yeah, but Jerry, you still take roads like that with GPS firedevil LOL
Garmin probably says they're paved!    I like my GPS, just not the witch that has possessed it.

I guess I got lucky because i stayed on 2-track fire lane until I came out on that little paved road just before 44.

All I saw on it were a couple of turkeys.  While it may be shorter, it's not a shortcut.

It was experiences like that made me want the Wee.

As you say; See you on the road.  SOON I hope.

I dunno...  Wife wants me to keep riding what I have: "But you just got the thing in September!"  Plus, she views scooters as being safer than motorcycles.  There is something to be said for not having to shift in traffic.

We'll see. I went out for an hour ride earlier today - there are just too many cinders on the road to really enjoy yourself just yet.  I can't tell if I'm taking corners slow because I'm chicken or because I'm afraid of wiping out.  I do feel the front tire dancing around and that isn't reassuring.

Once you get used to shifting it's really a non-issue. Go with a WeeStrom or SV650 and you'll have enough torque that you really only need 2nd and 3rd until you hit an interstate. As an added bonus, both are available with ABS which is a MUCH bigger safety feature in my humble opinion. In fact, my next commuter absolutely will be ABS equipped.

I do prefer cars with stick shift, so I'm sure I'd like a geared bike.  I can't get a stick shift car because my wife refuses to learn.  She likes the security of having my car as a backup for when her car is in the shop and such.

I keep reading mixed reviews on ABS.  I think I'd probably like it...

You will like ABS on the street.  I don't like it off-road, as a matter of fact, I wouldn't want it on a mostly off-road dual purpose machine.  Same goes for track riding.  I have ABS on my Wee.  When it comes to riding on the street, in traffic, in the rain, on long days, etc., the times you are glad you have ABS far outweigh any negatives.  BMW may have the best solution, where you can switch ABS on and off.  Shifting is just another technique that you can easily learn, and shifting actually increases the amount of control you have in any situation, at least I think so.

You're real problem will be finding a used dual-sport, esp. with ABS.

NO; I like my Wee.

That does it.  If you and Marcster plan on eating wings, you will have to sit at your own table.  This is a world-class burger joint.

I could certainly eat both...  Get one of those 1/3 lb. build-your-own burgers, some fries and wings...  There you go, the best of both worlds.

How about a Veggie Sub, Grilled Veggie Wrap, or a "Veggie Edge" (sounds like a baked wrap on a salad), or a Portabella Grill sandwich?  There's a couple of salads too.

I'm pretty sure I'll be heading up there.  And when I went up two years ago, I ran into a big group that rode out of Kissell's.

I probably will. I haven't made it to one of these yet. I was thinking of going to the Antique Motorcycle gathering in Oley that weekend.

Maybe some of the Nittany Road Riders will be going.

Since you ride a Kaw, you should know them soon. It's a Triumph, Duc, Kaw dealer on College Ave.  Nice shop, and I've always found them to be really nice folks.  Mostly a family operation.  They treated me well when I had a bit of service work done there (well, at the old location) when I still owned a Kaw.  Never bought a bike from them.  Nittany Road Riders run a lot of group rides out of their parking lot, I think.  I don't do many group rides, though, so I'm a bad source for that.
