I think it varies a bit, I know Kawasaki has the lowest age limit at Americade.  18?  21?

Next year leave your mother at home and you might get a demo.   Lol    JK, being twice that age, I'm running out of things to laugh about.

Ken - I love this thread - thanks for compiling it again.

ctbandit - age restrictions vary.  I demo'd Ducatis and MVs at Ferracci in Philly and Triumphs in Freehold, NJ before I was 25.  So did my brother.  When I was at Vintage Days in Ohio last summer 21 was the age to beat.  There were some very young riders.

Nice that you started this thread again, Ken.

Here is the full Triumph demo truck schedule - http://www.triumph.co.uk/usa/11197.aspx

For the Triumph demo truck, they have a 25 year old restriction; however, you may still be able to demo a Triumph if you visit a shop with a demo fleet during another day, when the demo truck isn't there.

The dealership I went to told me to come back and they'd set up a ride on one of their bikes for me. I never did. I don't wanna waste the guys time since I know I won't be purchasing something new for at least a year, likely two.

Oh just go do it, you're not wasting their time, especially if you're a Triumph virgin.  It's why they have demo bikes!  Plus taking out a dealer's demo bike is a lot more fun than being led like cattle on a group demo ride.

They usually try to skip the events that charge them an outrageous fee (NYC IMS) and try to focus on local dealers where they can have a more focused time with potential buyers. (As was described to me last year)

trflyboy and I kicked off the 2009 Demo season at Cross Country BMW/Ducati in Metuchen on Saturday.  Due to the very cold morning (19 degrees) I drove the 1.5 hours on the turnpike to get up there by around 9:30.  Ran into boxerdawg and jetset later in the day.  Went to a nice lunch with boxerdawg after our 2 demos.

First up was the BMW K1300GT.  Man, what a great touring bike.  Between the heated grips, heated seats and big windscreen, I never noticed it was in the 30's during the ride.  Even at 80mph on 287 I was comfy warm.  I had demo'd the K1200GT 2 years ago, and I felt the motor was pretty rough and buzzy at steady throttle.  The 13 seems to have fixed that issue - smooth, smooth, smooth.

Next up, and 180 degrees in the opposite direction weather protection-wise, was the Ducati Hypermotard 1100S. I could have spent the day just sitting there and revving the motor, listening to the Termi's.  Pulling out of the lot I was struck by how insignificant the bike seems.  I know many have commented on how the riding position allows for you to see nothing but road in front of you, and I'll add to that list.  It's really disconcerting to not see the bike at all, and to feel that you are sitting so far forward.  Particularly when you get on the brakes for the first time, you're thinking "i could flip over the bars, no problem".  Riding on 287 it felt like the temperature had dropped 30 degrees since my ride on the K13GT.

CCBMW laid out an OK route, probably the best they can do given their location.  Would have been nice if they'd put out some coffee in the morning though  Wink

The problem with the "Big 4" is that they usually sell enough bike ('08 and '09 are different.......) !
Most dealer will laugh at you if you ask for a test ride.  The majority of the test riders (or those that would be lined up) would be the squid-ly types !

** When I did the Ducati demo (in '08), everyone asked about a 1098....... (they only had an 848 and all the other type bikes), the answer was:
On the first day of the demo truck @ a dealer in Cali, the first ride, the initial attempt to move, some squid-ly kid "launched" the bike, in first gear, the bike flipped, flew into the air,
the kid on the ground and the kid just bought a really, really freakin' expensive wrecked bike !  They don't demo the 1098 anymore.

Could you imagine ZX-14 demos, busa demos or any liter bike.......

Harley is loosing numbers, there are only so many Harley Faithful (there demographic is a very specific age range) and they really need to attract new riders.
Ducati is a "Boutique" manufacturer, your average rider (especially a new rider) is not going to spend the extra $$$$
BMW is just more money and most people don't get the whole "german engineering" or "the ultimate driving machine" (applies to the cage too)
Victory doesn't have the chops yet (as in sales numbers) because their competing with Harley and are more expensive than a metric cruiser

Kawasaki routinely has all their sportbikes available for demo rides on their truck - including the ZX-14 and ZX-10R.  They also have the lowest age requirement (18, iirc), and they allow pillions on the ride.  Kudos to them.

"848"  (think of Homer Simpson saying "Mmmmm... Dounuts" !) Drool

I don't think that I was ever more impressed, on 2 wheels !
Reminded me of the plane in that Clint Eastwood movie..... where he just has to think and the plane responds  Bigsmile
you have to really do something "DUMB" to upset that bike, but you can also get into some serious trouble for squidly behavior.

Last minute addition - Sport Honda in Metuchen, NJ is doing demos this Saturday.  See more on their home page: http://sporthonda.net/.

I actually demo'd a VFR there 2 years ago and they just gave me the keys and a suggested 15 mile or so route.  No pressure at all.  I was quite surprised.

Nice find!  I've already got plans for the demos at Hannum's HD in PA otherwise I'd be all over this.  Should be a spectacular day weather-wise.

Quick update - Honda was only demoing cruisers, DN-01 and Hyosungs (GT650 and 250).  No Honda sport bikes were made available.

Next door was also doing BMW/Duc demos.  I was about 2 hours early though and I'd rather be riding my current bike than waiting around on a beautiful day to ride a prospective bike.

Interesting - I didn't realize that Martin's had sold that location to new owners and changed the name.

Question: the Americade site (as well as your list) does not list BMW as running demos. Does that mean they're not showing up?

Indian is back......again.

If anyone is interested, an Indian dealership is opening in Worcester, Mass.

Demo truck will be there June 12 & 13

700 Plantation Street
Worcester, Ma

Good opportunity to see some of these barges actually RUNNING. They don't make 'em like they used to, but they sure are pretty.

This saturday Martins Motorsports is doing a 'Sport Touring Demo' Day.  From 10 to 3 you can ride the FJR, Connie, and Sprint ST back to back to back.  I would be there but I am 'Demoing' all the way to Roanoke for the weekend  Bigok

Good deal today as it was not crowded at least at the time I went. I think I saw Jeets taking off in one group.

You probably saw me and trflyboy then as well.  I was there from 9a to around noon when us and Jeets took off for lunch.  I was surprised when I got there this morning and they wanted everyone to sign up for all 3 bikes - yowza!  Thanks!

Loved the Sprint.  Loved the Connie (except for the deal-breaking heat).  Liked the FJR.

We must have just missed each other..I thought the Concours was the best and you are right about the heat on the right side but for that motor I would live with it. The fjr was decent and for some reason I was not impressed with the sprint. I thought the triple would have some more pop to it.

That is where I was parked before leaving for lunch. I did notice the red multi over on the left side of the parking lot. Near where they had the cones set up for the rides but did not notice the plate. If I had seen NJ I would have waited for you.

This was actually the 3rd Sprint I have ridden and short shifting sounds kind of dirty. I did get to redline on a previous ride and the bike is good but I did expect a little more acceleration going through the gears.   Smile

That's interesting.  I wish I could have made this test ride to try out the big power on the C14 & FJR for my own comparison.  I tested a Buell 1125CR last night and now have a test ride bug.  When are you picking up your Concours?

It looks like Martin's will have the Triumph truck on this coming First Sunday Un-Ephrata meet, but not on 7/4 like Ken's schedule suggests now.  That would be a fun Sunday morning activity.

This Sunday is First Sunday!

The coffee is hot and the donuts are fresh this holiday weekend at Martin Motorsports during the "Un-Ephrata". But thats not why people come - it's to meet up with friends, browse the showroom or just check out the variety of motorcycles typically on-hand. The store is open from 9am to 12am Sunday (we're closed Saturday for the 4th) and on this particular Sunday we will have the Triumph truck filled with shiny new Triumphs including the stunning, new Thunderbird.

Triumph demo rides are next tuesday and wednesday, anybody else showing up.  I'll be there probably early afternoon before everybody else gets off work and shows up.  Been really itchin to take a street trip R out but I'm afraid I will become addicted and need one afterwards.  Having never ridden any triumph I'm lookin forward to it.

So, just how early do you have to get there to actually GET a demo ride.  Do you basically have to be there when they open?  Every time I've gone to one, there have been too many people in line ahead of me.

I would really like to ride a Tiger 1050... the Triumph demo is right up the road from me.

Try going to the dealer on a non-demo truck day.  They probably have a demo Tiger available, and may let you just take the keys.

Or, seeing that I've met you, travel up to Ephrata and I'll let you ride mine and I'll try your wee-strom.  Wink

Bigsmile  Yeah, you'd be welcome to take my Strom for a spin whenever.  I'm really curious about the Tiger.  I've sat on it, and it feels no heavier than my VFR, and the seating position is obviously very much like my V-Strom.  It seems very much like a blend of the two.

Sometimes I ride my V-Strom and just sorta *yawn*.  I don't know what it is... it makes decent power, but it delivers it in such a blah way.  It's almost as if it's "ambiguously tuned."  It doesn't have much low-end torque, nor does it have any top end rush.  Just this kinda blah midrange power that's vaugely pleasant.

I find myself wishing I could drop my VFR's engine in the V-Strom... which leads me to wondering about just selling them both getting a Tiger.  That would probably cheaper than attemtping a "V4 Conversion" on the Strom.  Razz

I can't comment on the Wee's power as I've only ridden the DL1000 V-strom, and that had a pretty big set of balls.  The VFR that I rode was able to get its steam on at higher revs, but my Tiger does feel noticeably more powerful, and lighter in the front end.  Though the VFR of course has a sportier riding position, the Tiger is the wilder ride of the two.  The VFR was smooth and road-hugging, while the Tiger is a bit coarser and requires a bit more attention to throw around because of the riding geometry - but it's so much fun.

This Sunday is First Sunday in Ephrata - if you want to go ride, lemme know.

Thinking about it - gotta wait and see my work schedule -for that weekend.
Would be a great ride after a week of a house full of mom and sister in-laws.
And will probably the only chance that I get to test ride any of the Japanese manufacturers.
Going to demo Triumph this week, mainly for the Tiger, I want to test the C14, FJR, FZ1 and maybe the Bandit.
Will post as soon as I know.

Later,

So, just how early do you have to get there to actually GET a demo ride.  Do you basically have to be there when they open?  Every time I've gone to one, there have been too many people in line ahead of me.

I would really like to ride a Tiger 1050... the Triumph demo is right up the road from me.

Hey Zerosum,

Are you still going to go up to Pete's for the Triumph Demo ??
I am going Friday am - looks like they start at 10am.
