Most at TWT know about this but I am post this up here just in case you are not there..
This is cut from the paper
Should Texas Legalize Lane Sharing for Motorcycles?
Friday March 13, 2009
Motorcycle Lane Splitting One of the reasons I love living in California is the ability to legally split lanes on a motorcycle. Though the Department of Motor Vehicles warns that "lane sharing is not safe," the California Highway Patrol states that "Lane splitting by motorcycles is permissible but must be done in a safe and prudent manner."
If one Dallas senator gets his way, California won't be the only state to allow motorcycles to slip between traffic. The Kneeslider reports on a Houston Public Radio story about Senate Bill 506, which proposes that lane-splitting be legalized in the Lone Star State. Stephen Polunsky of the Texas Senate Committee on Transportation and Homeland Security asserts that lane sharing "is going to help everybody get faster," and the bill stipulates that lane sharing be made legal only when the motorcyclist is traveling 5 mph faster than traffic, the flow of cars is no faster than 20 mph, and both operator and passenger must be wearing helmets, among other details.
I'm certainly spoiled by the law in California and think more states should legally adopt lane-splitting... what do you think? Comment here, and if you're a Texas resident seeking the right to lane split, contact your local senator via this site.

Guess the ever-insightful DMV never thought about what happens to a motorcyclist if he/she's in between two vehicles involved in a rear-ender accident.
Motorcycle vs. car = Motorcycle loses
I save so much time commuting on the bike because I can split lanes...
Go Texas.

I've heard this called - filtering. there is a difference from lane sharing (two bikes riding side-by-side) and lane splitting/filtering. I love the idea, wish more voters would get onboard.

I loved lane splitting when I live in CA and Germany. It cuts down on traffic reduces risk. I wouldn't leave it to the voters though. They (non riding public) seems to know more of what's good for me than me. I don't think the public would vote for me to pass them while they are idling in traffic. I don't have enough faith in the general public for them to realize a bike lane splitting helps them too.

I understand filtering as moving through traffic stopped at a light, taking our rightful spot at the front of the line!
The issue I fear is not the accident, but the road rage and resentful reactions for those stuck cages.

The state MUST invest in education before and after the new law is enacted.
You have to do billboards & other stuff to let the drivers know this is being allowed and encouraged.
CA drivers know to expect it, and generally scoot over when they can.

I still hear it from some people that they don't like the ability of motorcyclists to lane share. It affronts their sense of "fairness".

I wish Texas the best of luck in passing this law. I can tell you that I'm enjoying it to the fullest here in California
Washington state has had some fans trying to push this trough the past couple of years. I think that once we can get more than California on the books it'll be "easier" for other states to follow suit. No on really takes California seriously

I agree. But like rgbeard said the state must make sure everyone knows. The problem I see is people don't read the signs. There is always going to be that idiot It would be a slow procces getting used to the idea.
If not left up to the voters, then how does the law get passed?

Didn't lane splitting just sort of "happened" in California?
meaning it was never really legalized as much as it was tolerated?

Ding ding ding. Correct answer.
It's not illegal. That's the most accurate description.
