Removing the DOT sticker
«
on:
March 27, 2009, 10:27:43 AM »
Just got a new Shoei delivered and was wondering if there are any legal issues with removing the DOT/Snell sticker on the back. On previous helmets I've had the sticker was cleared over so removing it wasn't an option, this one isn't and should pull right off. It says Snell on the sticker on the inside of the helmet but nothing about DOT anywhere but on the sticker on the back.

Not sure if it applies to all states, but in NY anyway you have to have the DOT sticker shown. IMHO I do not think a cop would ever even think to check on a FF helmet....but I suppose they could write you up if they really wanted to bust balls.

I was wondering if it might vary by state. In Illinois I don't even have to wear a helmet so I'm sure it's not an issue here but I do travel some on the bike.

I actually bought a much larger DOT sticker to put on my helmet. Looks sweet IMO.

Soak the DOT sticker off with denatured alcohol, let the alcohol evaporate, and stick the sticker on the inside. Some riders in Texas do not have to wear a helmet, but if a helmet is worn it must be DOT approved.

Technically you need to have the DOT sticker or be at risk of a ticket, but I've never heard of it being a problem since DOT is required for the helmet to be sold in the first place.
Snell, the external sticker doesn't mean anything anyway. If Snell is required by a race org, they only go by the internal sticker/label (at least they should).

I'm not sure how the laws are from state to state, but the decal is more of a notice to the buyer.
However, I'd not doubt that there are enough cops out there that would ball-bust over the fact that a DOT sticker isn't displayed on the helmet post-sale.
