Sorry for your loss.  

Trying to avoid a deer  while I was coming out of a corner . Ended up lowsiding the bike at around 60mph. I panicked, got on the front brake before the bike was upright and down I went.

I'm going over to the dealer today to get some pics and see whats up. Will post some up when I get back.

New Pilot Road 2's installed last Tuesday, finally managed to be able to ride them this weekend.  They feel great so far.

Also, lowered the rear about an inch or so.  Things learned when lowering: when replacing the arms, you need to lengthen the arms to decrease the seat height (who knew  ) and in doing so, millimeters in arm length equals inches in height.  Worked through some trial and error but in the end i'm good to go!

I'm glad you're OK. It sucks, but it's just a bike. You being OK and able to ride again is the important part.

I rode around 1000 miles chasing the fastest group I'd ever seen on the street this weekend. I'm happily tired and need another vacation.

Back on topic.... I installed new fork seals in my '94 BMW K1100RS last week. It took two weeks for my OE seals to arrive from Germany.

WHAT? After your Ferodo disc upgrade, you STILL managed to toast the brakes???

20 hard stops are required by Ferodo in order to in-bed pad material onto the ceramic disc... so I didn't
toast the brakes... I boiled the fluid because it was contanminated with moister... brake fluids should be
changed yearly to prevent the continuous access to moisture...

Or go with DOT5.*  It's silicone based and repels moisture.  And it doesn't eat your paint.  


*  Warning:  If you do this, it requires a new braking system.  Putting DOT5 in an already-used DOT3 or DOT4 system will F everything up, and vice versa.

Oh I abuse the hell out of my brakes (course the bike being a pork chop does not help). I think the EBC's are almost warped again. I took the forks down to add race-tech goodies. Got to paint the leg lowers tonight....they are rough! Might as well do it now while they are apart.

Buddy and I relocated the license plate to the rear fender of my KLR, anchoring the plate with dome bolts that have LED lights so the plate is legally illuminated.

Rode Cascade Lakes Hwy on Sat on the Guzzi and got to practice braking from 90 and was about to swerve left when the buck (big honk'in antlers still in velvet) did a 180 and went back into the forest.  

Later that night Ural Ballast Babe adn I ate dinner with Dantesdame, Bombauer, Kurtw and his wife at Bend Brewing Co.

Sunday another KLR buddy and I rode our Kawis up the Paulina and East Lake road, strafing it very well up and down, then did Cascade Lakes Hwy as he hadn't ridden it yet this year.

In the last two weeks I've done Aufderheidi Scenic Byway between OR 58 and OR 126, the Cascade Lakes Hwy, and now Paulina-East Lakes.  Summer may finally be here; once OR 242 the McKenzie Hwy opens, it will officially be summer, even though ODOT is closing 242 AGAIN to work on straightening out some of those luscious curves.

Ordered a head gasket and found a salvage yard that'd give me a good enough deal on a new cylinder head I just went with that instead of ordering the parts I needed from the dealer for tons of $$$ or hoping the ones I could have gotten off of ebay were in the box and as described.

True... DOT 5 doesn't eat paint because it is a silicone fluid... the down side is that it doesn't turn dark
with moisture like glycol DOT 4 or 5.1 fluids... turning dark gives the user a warning that a change is
overdue... DOT 5 will not change it's color...

I don't think you can say that DOT 5 repels moisture... rather it will not aggressively attract additional
moisture as glycol fluid does... but silicone's disadvantage is that it is a fluid that aerates easily...
whether you pick glycol versus silicone... all brake fluids attract moisture...

Jeff at Ferodo recommends DOT 4 or DOT 5.1... he does not recommend DOT 5... after researching the
properties of glycol and silicone based fluids... I've settled on glycol DOT 4... because Silicone fluid is
slightly more compressible than glycol fluid... glycol has a naturally occuring lubricity... the down side is
that it neither accepts or disperses moisture which makes my system more corrosion prone requiring
much more frequent fluid changes...

Despite being lapped many times by many bikes it was good fun.    It would have been BETTER fun if it wasn't so stinking COLD though....  frost warning again tonight....

What happened to your heads?  

Rocker arm screw broke.  rocker arm got messed up, scratched the valve spring retainer clip, collet went flying around in the engine, and the rocker arm damaged the cam.  I could have used the bike with just a new rocker arm, screw, and nut but this way it's back to new and no more worries.  The idjit that owned the bike before me wayyy overtightened the valve clearance adjustment nuts and I was a little afraid the other rocker arms might be partially threaded as well and don't want an encore.  The whole new cylinder head was maybe $100 more than the replacement parts and now I have extra valves and other stuff I can sell so it'll probably end up being the same price in the end, just less wait time in IL before I can get home.

Yup, I have more bad luck than anyone should.    After I agreed to get the one from the salvage yard I got an email offering me a whole cylinder head for $50 shipped.    At that price I guess I'll have an extra now too.

I replaced a Pirelli Diablo with a Dunlop D220 after only 4942 miles, a bit disappointing since I got 6339 out of the previous one. Prefer the Diablos, but got the Dunlop for cheap at Cycle Gear. Riding in wet conditions in the twisties this weekend convinced me I was overdue for the change.

Maybe I'm getting harder on my tires, as my rears aren't lasting as long as before either.

I wiped two inches of hail off of my KLR seat and rode home through partially flooded streets.  Good times, good times with more t-storms forecast for the week.  Rode the Ural today and will do for the remaining days as it's tough to fall down on three wheels.

I hugged it.  Can't ride just now for medical reasons but I still love my bike.
