Import bike from UK to U.S. ?
«
on:
April 16, 2009, 12:25:47 PM »
I was thinking that I wanted a new Honda XL700V Transalp but it is only available in the UK. Anyone have an idea how much of a hassle it would be to bring one over to the United States? There isn't really a similar bike over here.
Thanks in advance.

I'll contact a dealer and ask. In fact, I might ride over to P&H tomorrow and ask them in person.
Email sent here:

Here's some other dealers' websites, if you want to contact therm yourself:

Right, the answer is that P&H and all the Honda dealers they know do not get involved in shipping abroad. They said that the bike would have to be bought first, registered in the UK, then shipped by you.
Have you asked a local Honda dealer in the US if they will do it?

Not sure it matters, but friend in the RAF shipped his Harley from UK to Denver while he was stationed here. Then shipped it back. Wasn't much of a hassle, I think the Colorado DMV treated him well with taxes/registration.
Also, have American friends in UK who have bought bikes, they did not have to pay VAT on the bikes as they were living there tax free (defense contractors for US). When he wants to sell it, if he sells to another Yank, no taxes, sells to a Brit and VAT will be due.
Not sure but if you are buying it and shipping it here, you should NOT have to pay VAT and may not have to register it in UK....just a guess on that one though.

Good luck registering a bike without an EPA approval in the States.

Buy a Multistrada or KTM 950sm = saves a lot of hassle, expense and better bikes.
