Maryland speed cameras
«
on:
April 22, 2009, 12:25:06 PM »
I just read a letter from a state legislator last evening that indicated our wonderful state reps approved legislation allowing speed cameras around the State of Maryland. If I understood correctly, these are mobile camera units, the fine for less than 15 over is $40, no points, no insurance impacts. No mention of what if over 15 miles per hour over.
I’m not a big speeder, but often ride… 10 or so over. This could become an expensive habit, if I read it right and it’s implemented.
I saw a bumper sticker the other day: “Welcome to O’Malleyland – what’s in your wallet?” I need to find one of those.
That or mount my new license plate under the tail on the subframe like the squidly kids across the street do…

You knew it was coming when Montgomery County started collecting revenue from it. I got my picture taken down there last year. Fuckers.

I still can't believe he got elected to Governor after the disaster he was as Baltimore's Mayor.

DNA, after almost 8 months off a motorcycle I need to regain some confidence and comfort on the bike; after 4 years and only a little better than 15k miles on the last bike, I was still pretty certain you guys are too fast for me. LOL, I'll show up at the gas station one day, but I don't think I want to try to hang with you guys - a guy's gotta know his limits.
Our field crew got a ticket in Montgomery County this month - speed camera. I hate those things.
[politics]
It's not really a surprise about O'Malley if you consider the size and apparent gullability of the electorate in B-more - he promised everything to them if they'd just elect him... of course they voted for him. He did immediately raise the sales tax 20% with promises of paying for their educational system... not that it worked out very well for us, them, or anyone else; but especially B-more with their new, and possibly even worse, mayor.
I don't tend to like pols, but I hope Erhlich runs again; he was better than O'Malley, at least, and is probably the only one with a chance to challenge the bastard.[/politics]

Wait... don't speed cameras take a picture of the FRONT of your vehicle? If so, why do motorcyclists care? The radar has to get you as your approaching. Unless the camera is pointing in your direction of travel, and getting you as you pass, but that sounds rather error-prone to me.

Back of vehicle - that's what showed up (in 3 separate frames) on the ticket my coworker received from Monkey County. Clear enough to read the bumper sticker (almost) and for us to identify the driver by the back of head, shoulders visible (or at least differentiate between the two possible drivers: the fat guy with dark hair or the skinny guy with blonde hair).

Speed cameras are all over the place here in France. The good news is that GPS are programed to sound a warning when you get close to a fixed camera. There are also radar units that pick up both the fixed and mobile units reportedly soon enough so that you have time to slow down. Maybe getting one is the way to go?
I'm sure the effing things will be everywhere soon!

The cameras in Montgomery County take a picture of the rear of a vehicle as it passes the target painted on the road ( large white lines). They "give" you 10 mph over the limit.
Here's a hint for them - They are most likely close to a school zone ( but not always)
Pay attention to the speed limit sign. The signs close to speed cameras have a smaller sign that states Photo enforced. The max fine is $40.00. Red light cameras are $75.00
The ones the state wants to install are stationary cameras , They will give you 12 mph.
The max fine is $40.00

it is an expensive habit indeed, already got two
. both in school zones. one clocked at 46mph on a 35mph limit, (can't remember the other one last February). i believe the camera is automatically set to take a shot at speeds of 11mph or more above the posted limit.
tip to self, slow down at all school zones (wonder if the cameras are still on on Sundays, more likely)
will be looking for that sticker too.

while my first reaction is to vandalize them, i would compromise and either put a lense cap on them or tape over the lense. Using any kind of law enforcement tool as a source of revenue does not sit well with me. Sorry to you LEO guys in here but i am sick of being hunted like an animal in the continuing quest to seperate me from my wallet.

Montgomery County also has the mobile units. Usually a minivan with the radar, flash and camera setup in the grill and on the bumper. I had the opportunity to "have a tour" of one of these units last year. Quite slick. Officer with a computer in the back, just taking pics, running tags, and issuing the cites within a matter of minutes, they all go in the mail the next day.
