I was wondering the same thing. Was looking on my road map of Colorado and noticed some camp sites around the lake west of town, but that must be ten miles away
Would be cool it there was A group camp for the people who are not into the hotel/motel thing

If I make it down there for the Nat. I'll be wanting to camp as well.
Edited to add: Haven't been to one since the very first one in S.D.

There are many forest service campgrounds.
There is also the Tall Texan just north of town, the Mesa campground western of town, and a senior RV campground in town.

I think the Tall Texan would be the best place for all of you that want to camp.
It's only about 2 miles north of town. They have tent sites at like $17.00 per night for 2 people.
they have showers eating area's and claim that all groups are welcome.
It's a little too far to walk to dinner or the bar... but you can always catch a free ride on the town drunk bus! Or get some adult beverages and stage them at your camp, and enjoy a nice fire. I'm sure there will be people that are not camping that would come spend time with you guys around a fire, drinking a beer or two.

Two miles? That's not too far to walk. Unless you're carrying a couple of cases of beer.

I called the Forrest Circus and the Business Land and Money (BLM) offices in
Gunnison. The closest camp sites they have to Gunnison is Almont which is 10 miles north of Gunnison towards Crusty, is $10. per night, and no showers (970) 641-0471.
I also called the park service which runs all the campsites around the lake west of town (970) 641-2337. The closest campground they have to Gunnison is Stevens Creek which is twelve miles west of town along the lake, is $12. per night for up to eight people, and showers at the marina A few more miles down the road. I think this would be the best bet outside of Gunnison, and is also towards the Black Canyon of the Gunnison which is by far the best riding road in the area if you want twisties.
I would rather get a room than pay $17. per night to camp myself.

You and oddball could share a site. That would make it $8.50 per night.
I was just trying to think
of a way to keep you guys close to town and the rest of the group.
As long as you're not staying in a designated campground in the forest it's free. pitch a tent anyplace you want. But if you need showers or access to any liquor/food stores you'll be running back and forth to town. Good luck and let me know if I can help, I'll do what I can. One thing to keep in mind...
if it's super dry, there may be a fire ban and open fires will not be allowed in National Forest or BLM.

It would be nice to be right in town by the main group. If you know of anymore private campgrounds in town please post em. Was also thinking of getting a room one night and camping two. I always like A campfire, the stars overhead, and A bottle of vodka with limes and soda water after A long day on the back roads.

You might watch out for bears too. Leanintree almost hit one in the middle of the road in his not too distant past. They get a little curious in the evening. Big ass gun (not me) might come in handy???

Hell ya Lurk- N- Stocker. As long as your not a Birkenstock Biker, if so we can always give you a bath. The Dennis Hopper Summer Of Love is here in Taos this summer and the Rainbow Gathering National too, so I am going to have enough Pachuli and Birkenstock Bozos camping around me the entire summer. Strap a tent, sleeping pad, credit card, and fart sack on the Duck and come hit the twisties.

I am in for Tall Texan or any site that is less than 10 miles away from the hotel. The meet is two weeks away so I guess we should pick one.

I like the Stevens creek idea. It's twelve miles away, twelve dollars for up to eight people, and there are showers close by for one dollar. Plus it is right by one of the best roads in CO. Is that to far away? Maybe I should ride up there next week and check out the options. It's only about 300 miles from me if I take the twisty route.
Would be good to get a count of how many would like to group camp

I can live with 12 miles. BTW, I am 200 miles away. If I have nothing going on, I will scope it out. Im in for camping but where?

Just found the Mesa RV Resort (970) 641-3186 .Three miles west of town on #50, showers, $18 per night for up to five people and a little more for additional people. They think a reservation would be a good idea. Sounds close to busy highway and lots of RVs. I am still leaning towards Stevens Creek.
Stevens Creek is twelve miles from town, so at 60mph it will only take twelve minutes to get to town and sixty is normal for that stretch. Just not sure how far the Gunnison Inn is from the town limit

Well, this happens every year. Just pick a place. i looked at a few places and either they are commercialized with a bunch of old geezers playing shuffleboard or something or far away from the meet with sites that have shrub and hard ground and no electrical. I am ready to just pick a site and it might be at the National Park at Black Canyon.

Pretty sure I'm camping too since I've forgotten to make reservations anywhere, guess I'll just swing by Stevens Creek and look for debauchery.

Looks like I am out unless I can get a cooling fan by Monday and put it in
. Triumph wants $380. for it, so I am looking at fabricating one onto the shroud. Plus there is no Saturday delivery to Taos, but I am not giving up yet.

You can do it! We have faith in you!!!
Hit the local Checker Auto and slap on a universal job for like $80.00. You can get it done in like an hour or so and then you're up and running to the National!!! Don't let us down. Remember... it doesn't have to look pretty. Just work.
Do you even need a fan? As fast as you're riding you'll have plenty of cool air going through the thing.

I just ordered one and it should be here by Monday afternoon. In the meantime I am going to cut the old one off the shroud and have it all ready to slap the new one on. I hope UPS does not blow this one. Rode back from Gunnison Thursday without it working but had to take a route without towns
Made it all the way without problems until I got to the two mile dirt rode I live up. Had to let it cool down for fifteen minutes half way up my driveway.
