Some of you have wondered if the golf-style windshirts would work for our purposes as well.  A friend gave me a nice Ashworth brand windshirt a few weeks ago to try out.  Yesterday I went out for a short ride in about 45 degree temps.  I had limited clothing options as I wasn't really planning on riding that day and didn't get my stuff together.  I wound up wearing:  A mesh riding jacket (completely mesh with exception of armor) the wind shirt, and a long-sleeve t-shirt.  That's it.  I hit speeds of over 70 mph and was out for probably 40 minutes.  I stayed pretty warm...it certainly would do the trick under perfed leathers and over some thermal layering or a Gerbing liner.

I, too, have wondered how effective they would be.  Thanks for the tip!

Hey neat idea.  Especially if you find some on clearance.
Also, I have windproof fleece jacket [North Face & Columbia make them] I wear under perf. leather jacket.  Same effect, but warmer.  Windstopper jackets are pricey, but I've found them well worth the $$.

Yeah, but the Windstopper stuff is really pricey.  You can get these very thin windshirts from golf places for less than $40 and it works really well, and it will pack small enough that you could keep one in your tankbag year round if need be.

or if you're really cheap,  Razz  support your local thrift store. I've got two high quality, fully lined windshirts that cost me less than 5 bucks apiece.

For Xmas, I got a Rev It windshirt. Not cheap, but it works great. It has a micro fleece liner in the front and breathable rear. The zipper is at the shoulder too.

I stumbled on to that same conclusion a few years ago when on a trip in my Perf. leather,I ran into a cold snap.

Found a golf shirt like yours and wore it under the jacket, worked great and now its standard  kit.

Now all we need is some group buy with the STN logo and a color choice.

I have a Nike-Oklahoma windshirt, I like it especially here where we don't really get cold. When we went to the OU-Texas Tech game I had mu UA Cold Gear shirt, a sweatshirt and the windshirt over it and I was comfortable without the bulk even though it was around 40 degrees and some wind. I have worn it under my HG Timbuktu when it was close enough in temp to not use the liner and get warmer in the afternoon. Much easier to pull it off rather than pulling the jacket liner out.

My wife bought a house brand fleece jacket at Academy that has a wind stopping liner inside for around $25.

I use these too, but my secret weapon for really cold is a golf-oriented cotton sweater with a windproof lining. the combination is hugely effective. You could do the same thing by layering a windproof long sleeve T like those being discussed with an insulating layer, perhaps something even less bulky than the sweater....

How about something like this?  The cost would be about $30 apiece if there were 50 orders.

Since cooler weather is coming, I'm bumping this back up.
I found out the same thing two or three years ago when I bought a Palm Beach windshirt on sale after Christmas for around $20.  It worked so well, it now lives all rolled up in my tank bag for anytime I need some extra warmth/wind protection.
Maybe a group but would be a good idea?

you can come close to replicating the wind-proofedness (izzat a word) of a wind-proof fleece garment by sprahying the daylites outa a fleece thingie you already own with Scotch-guard (which will, one presumes, also protect you from scotsmen, if that's a concern)

it'll also help with any water that sneaks through the outer layer of gear --

I dumped a can of heavy duty SG on a mid-wieght fleece pull-over thingie (freebie from ex-employer), and it works aces!

say a nuther data point for the graph -- that, and ya don't have to go into a golf store, which is always a bonus ;-}
