FMD DUAL SPORT/TRAIL RIDE
WHY:
to have fun and my driveway is all screwed up. i need a whole buncha gravel or consistently replace suspension components on my truck. i figured i could maybe eek a few bucks out to pay for some gravel by organizing a trail ride. i'm not looking to make a profit. just pay for some gravel. and maybe enough to fix my yard after a buncha people camp on it. this is not sanctioned, and not endorsed by anyone, i just am routing a course. it's your decision to ride it at your own risk. yes, this may end up kinda half assed, but at least the ride will be nice. i'll try to have it organized enough so it's not fubar.
WHERE :
south of morgantown, wv approximately halfway between morgantown and grafton. email or call for directions/gps coordinates!! read the whole page, and you will see they are included.
WHEN:
ride starts saturday aug. 15th - 10am. riders meeting at 9:30 am. sign up with me whenever or at meeting or in advance via email..
THE BASICS:
primitive camping at my property (my front and backyard - 3 acres clear) friday aug. 14th after 3pm.
clear out saturday aug. 15 after 5pm...
if you wanna stay elsewhere i can recommend camping/motels/hotels.
FIX MY DRIVEWAY DONATION :
RIDE IS FREE _ DONATIONS ARE APPRECIATED!
CLASSES :
vintage lightweight (up to 200cc 2t, 250cc 4t)
vintage heavyweight (201cc+ 2t, 251cc+ 4t)
modern lightweight (monoshock)(up to 200cc 2t, 250cc 4t)
modern heavyweight (monoshock)(201cc+ 2t, 251cc+ 4t)
beast (520+cc 4t, 360+cc 2t)
hard luck award
yes, there will be some kinda awards/trinkets!
this is not a race. obey the speed limit.
DETAILS: (MOTORCYLES ONLY - NO ATV's!)
24 mph average speed..standard lenient enduro road scoring, there may or may not be a checkpoint. start at 1 minute intervals. can start ride pairs at 1 minute intervals if you like. well marked course, with roll sheet and landmarks.. i will send someone out before the run to double check arrows/directions. i've been on enough rides that were poorly marked that made the ride just lame.
RIDE:
approx. 45+ miles (maybe a lot more, but only scored at roughly 45 mile point...so you can bail out at 45 miles if it sucks, or keep riding...) dirt/trail ride - fire roads, dirt roads, dirt trails, single track, water crossings, rocky stuff, gravel roads etc. whatever else i can figure out. there will be optional hero sections or 2, they may or may not make the route shorter, they'll just be there to do. course may be difficult for very big bikes, maybe i'll try to figure alternate routing if some gs's or the like wanna run it... nothing harder than say a 'blue' trail at hatfield mccoy. the hero sections would be 'black' and may be just hillclimbs, or trials type stuff. i dunno. depends on what i add. there may be a gas stop if you like, but if you can't run 45 miles without getting gas, something is wrong..
i'm shooting for 10% or less pavement. you will cross pavement, and maybe make short (less than 1 mile jaunts) on pavement/painted roads..
WV LAW
(to the best of my knowledge - i could wrong..)
license plate required if paved road has a center line (painted roads..)
no license plate for all other roads.
so street legal is recommended (lights/license plate). but you can run whatever you feel like at your own risk.. i personally run untagged 100% of the time, never had a problem.....................so far the route has two sections 1/2 mile long on paved/lined road. everything else is offroad.
WHAT TO BRING:
camping stuff/food. no campfires. i could do a communal campfire if people are interested.
bikes full of gas.
rollchart holder (optional)
odometer (optional, but it helps..)
helmet (required!)
atgatt or whatever you need.
gps (always nice to have..)

hah. i need 120 tons of gravel minimum (well over $1200.00...) . i'm not asking for anyone to show up and do physical labor or anything - it's just a ride. you've been on the driveway - it's gotten much worse...anyways, the fix my driveway thing is more of a joke. it's just an enduro for fun really. i'm not expecting anyone to pay unless they want to - it does say donation.....it does suck to buy a buncha rocks. when i know it won't last more than a coupla years...i've already got some interest in the ride, should be a bunch of riders... i've laid out 15 miles of mixed terrain without crossing paths, and under 1 mile of pavement so far. stitching the sections together without pavement is the hard part... i've got another section that's about 15 miles i've got routed in my head, i just gotta get out and ride it - gonna do it early this week. i doubt that i can fit the bunner's ridge/hard rock stuff into it - it's too far in the wrong direction. i guarantee even local riders will see trails they've not seen before...

It isn't too far away from me. If I can get the days off and have the 5,000 projects done I have on my list I may come down for that.

Looks like a ton of fun (pun intended... though I've done better).
Sheri and I will be in Wheeling WV that weekend or I would attend.

I think I've just about convinced the wife to ditch our plans in Wheeling so I can attend. I'll be in the "beast" class w/ my 650cc. Need help plotting any routes?

rain or shine.
help plotting routes would be nice. and any excuse to ride the trails is good enough for me...and input from others is appreciated. bmail me for phone, and i can give ya a call, or call me..
i've seen cops on the areas i'm routing exactly zero times. i think there's
maybe
a sheriff that patrols but i've never seen him..the whole route is along the edge of 3 counties, so i think all the cops ignore it (i.e. turn around before they get to county border..) but i see 4 wheelers runnning on the roads here all the time. this is a very rural area... i hardly think they even care.. it's pretty much a moot point, the amount of on road is so miniscule..

i rode a buncha trails on the montesa today. i gotta remember to NOT route trails for this on it. it goes places no mx/dirt/dual sport bike will go. i was doing big rutted out hillclimbs, but not following the lines, i was riding NEXT to the trail...if the hillclimb turned half way up, i ignored the turn and went straight into the woods. i found myself looking for the most difficult trails, with the big big rocks, the big logs, the untraveled trails, it cuts through the rough no problem. fun stuff. downhills suck on it though, way too creepy feeling..no way to grip the non-existent seat/tank with your legs...and you gotta commit to a gear, since the shift lever is like 10" from the peg. riding fast is really uncomfortable too.......

Congrats on the bike!
I'm starting to think a 400cc would be the largest bike you need around these parts. A good 250 would be perfect. I would LOVE to have the Yamaha 250

250 2t or 4t? i rode a well set up brand new ktm 250 4t and it didn't have enough oomph. spoiled on the 450 i guess. the only issue i have is the bike's weight... maybe i should go back to 2t and get power and weight..
if you're gonna go 250, get the most hp you can find.....you'll want more eventually........

The 250 is great but you just cant sustain any interstate speed, off road and back roads its great. A light weight 400 would be great or get the KLX 450 and plate it. Top speed is around 92 and thats pushing it. I done a lot of mods and it all helped. I miss the big pig but this 200 pounder is more fun off the beaten path. You will need to try it out sometime

i ran the last 1/3 of the route today on my gasgas 200 - so far i've run the route on a te450, a gasgas 200, a montesa 314, and a yamaha xt225......there's less than 5% pavement.. (actually i think it's just 3 very short stretches of pavement (under 1 mile or so) and a few stretches of actual dirt road as transfers..it's a challenge making a trail that's not impossible for the bigger bikes, and not too easy for the mx bikes.....and making sure there's no 2 way traffic/crossing paths/etc.... but it is a fun ride for sure - some fast sections, some technical sections.... something for everyone...
anyone wanna ride after 5 pm this week? (tues/wed/thursday...) i could use some help stapling directional arrows, gps'ing the mileage, and general input... etc..

I won't be able to this week. But the DR will be ready, it sounds like a good time.

this weekend i'll be at reliability run (
http://www.geocities.com/ovbsa/
) - i ran 2/3 of the route today - 31.1 miles at 19 miles an hour moving avg........ and i was cooking. i could add some dirt roads/high speed roads to bring the average speed up, but that would be boring..
