Well, I done gone and done it.  I couldn't resist.
After 16 days, 11 states and just over 5,000 miles on the VStrom, my wife and I got to talking about a new bike.  When we were in Minneapolis on the way home, we stopped at Leo's South and sat on a BMW R1200RT.  Loved it, but the price was way too high for my blood.  But, we kept talking about that bike.  Basket, who was with us at the time, said that his SO's neighbour had a newer RT that was forever sitting in the driveway under a cover and never ridden.
Enter Fate:
Basket gets back and sees the neighbour (a rare occurrance) at the same time notices that the house has been sold.  Asks the neighbour if he still has the Beemer.  He does.  Would he consider selling.....pause...he would.  Long story short, I connect with the guy and we work out a DEAL.
It's a 2007 BMW R1200RT.  It has 600 miles on it  EEK!  And a year left on the warranty  EEK!  It has every option available for the RT except for the topcase.  It is in immaculate condition!!
So, the bike gets a new battery (because it had just plumb sat too long), a safety check and oil change.  I get the bike.
I cannot believe this bike.  It is smooth, has great weather protection and is comfortable.  The Strom is a comfy bike, don't get me wrong.  But this is definitely a step up.
So, now my nicely farkled and well maintained DL1000 is for sale!!  http://www.sport-touring.net/forums/index.php/topic,41043.0.html
Now, bask in it's glory!!

Now THAT'S the way to get a bike!!

It kills me to see people drop the coin on toys like this and have them sit and then take a huge hit on it.  I know I don't know the whole story, for all I know he could have had health probs.  I do know people who HAD to have the bike only to let it sit for no real reason but they continue to make payments on them...   Rolleyes

But SCORE for the guy on the receiving end of the deal!   Twofinger

Gorgeous bike - I'm sure the bike is excited to have an owner that will put it to good use.   Bigok

Good things come to those who wait. I hope you don't feel too guilty buying a used bike instead of stimulating the economy by giving a dealer your moolah.  Lol  You gave that old bike a new home so no one had to drag it out back and shoot it. Congrats!

Well said. Congrat's on the beautiful Blue BMW. Wish I still had my 85 R100CS. One thing to note, it's really not getting broken in engine wise until around 20k miles, and then just gets sweeter with time based on my experience. May you enjoy many safe and happy miles.

Fabulous ST mount.   Huge miles between fillups.    The motor is way nicer than it looks on paper.   Really easy to bump all kids of hard parts when the going gets really twisty, but yet very capable.   The juiced brakes are wierd, but very effective.   The front rim looks like it's made of metal, but it's actually made of very expensive swiss cheese.   I ran over a bump in the pavement and had to buy a new one.   $1000.

Congrats!

Thanks for all the well wishes!
I went out yesterday for a maiden 2-up run and we couldn't believe how smooth it is and how unaffected by cross winds and truck turbulence.  Both my SO and I are quite pleased with the purchase.  Now, I need to find a top case at less than retail Smile

It's been a pretty great summer so far. No fancy new bikes or anything. Mark's been doing a lot of off-road/trail riding and has been teaching his 17 year old daughter how to ride the CRF100. I have been doing everything I can to NOT go dirt biking and all that fun stuff. I have done some riding, kart racing, went to a water park...but my prego belly is starting to get big and I kind of worry myself if I do too much daredevil stuff.

You going to ride the new bike down to the GP this year, or do we get to have a Honda Fit showdown?

I wasn't crazy about that bike when I saw them on the showroom floors, but those pics look SWEET. I think the color makes a big difference. Its excellent when you find something that fits you so well, and even better when you work out a good deal to get it.

psst.... wanna see one naked?  Cool

First, all the gear that's getting replaced...

Now for the naked picture:

and another:

Congrats on your new ride. I had an '04 prior to getting the '09, there is a pretty big difference in the feel of the motors between the 1150 and 1200. You got a hold of a great bike. Enjoy... BTW, I have found pretty much two types of BMW owners. Those who ride (and I mean ride them), and those that buy them and let them sit around forever. I've always found it interesting when looking at used BMWs how there are high mileage BMWs and extremely low mileage BMWs, with very little in between.

Wayne.
Hubba hubba, they look good neked!  What were you replacing?  Was it mileage related?
The more I ride mine, the more I like it.  I replaced the chain and sprockets on the Strom today and took it for a test.  It is still a very comfortable bike, but the RT is just so refined.  So nimble.

I crashed mine at 65 MPH (see: http://www.sport-touring.net/forums/index.php/topic,39981.msg912856.html#msg912856). They are replacing a ton of stuff, thus all the boxes. The rear subframe is what they just finished replacing in the last picture.

Yowtch.
Good thing you are OK.  That looked nasty.
So, now for 2 questions.  What sort of GPS mount is that?  Also, now do you have a used and scratched top case for sale? Smile
