By 'cool' I mean thermally.  Dot (my GF) is considering a new bike.  Her '05 SV650 works well for her, but she could use a fairing and a more upright seating position (she already has barbacks on her bike and still could use a little more upright).  She has ridden a couple of other bikes and here is the problem:  She greatly dislikes having her legs baked by the engine.

Dot took a test ride in mesh gear on a F800ST and was bothered by the heat.  Mind you, she rode one for a week in heavier gear and it fine, but that was also in cool weather.  The other day she took a test ride on a FZ6R and found it way too hot on the legs.  After that test ride she hopped on her SV650 and verified that there is no heat issue with that.  The ergos of both the F800ST and the FZ6R were fine.

So, what bikes have an upright riding position, some fairing upfront, and no hot engine parts at the rider's legs?

I have the FZ6R and only heat I feel is right foot because of the cat-converter/exhaust nearby. Haven't noticed engine heat at all and have about 3,000 miles so far.

I didn't ride the FZ6R, but I did spend time on an F800ST.  It was a bit warm to me, but not an issue.  Dot is just more sensitive, I guess.  To be clear, except for that, she did like the FZ6R.

I've looked around, but no luck.  The next step on that path would be to check into putting the upper fairing from an SV650S onto her naked SV650.  Could be easier than finding a new 'cool' bike?   Headscratch

An electric bike????

I guess you want a bike with a lower fairing although that is no guarantee.

The problem, as I see it, is the motor.

The only time my Ninja gets hot is when I'm stuck for a long period of time in stop and go traffic.  It's seating position is very upright.  A Versys might also be a good suggestion, or an FZ6 (not the FZ6R) since it only has the upper fairing.

Also, if she's bothered by the heat, is it because she doesn't have any mesh gear?

I had an FZ6 for a year and a-half and it roasted my shins worse than any other bike I've owned.  Mesh gear only made it worse; heavy jeans or leather helped some.  The motor protruded a good ways on the Fizzer so that my shins were tucked behind it where air couldn't help dissipate the heat.  It was nice in the winter, though.  I don't have problems with heat on my Sprint RS.

How 'bout the new F650GS (the 800 twin, not the 650 thumper).  I guess that's the same engine as the F800ST, but maybe the heat characteristics would be different?  Plus it would give her more leg room and a more upright seating position than the F800ST.

It is the motor, but more the arrangement of the parts.  On the F800ST, the two spars connect too much to the top of radiator, so the spars get very hot.  On the SV650, the placement of the motor and the frame means there isn't a large heat source near the knees.  I mean, yeah, a motor will produce heat; the issue is where the motor sheds the heat.

Hey, thanks the suggestions.

You can always do some customizing to reroute the hot air and or route new cool air to help dispel the hot air.

A BMW R-bike?  I don't think I ever felt the heat from either the GS or the RT.  But I don't have any mesh gear.

no, no, no...he said "cool" bike.

an R bike is like trying to convince an 18 year old that Conway Twitty music is cool.
