hehe, let me know when you want to start that project...I'd love to turbo one of dem!
I have a bike you could turbo...
...that's right, the Ural
.
I've heard airheads could be turbo-ed, FWIW, but the thought of its performance characteristics past 70-odd MPH sends shivers down my spine. Still, the warranty is up in February...

heh. That'll increase its dependability!

No.
But I would have soooo much cred with the Ural crowd. If they were all hot supermodels instead of crippled, half-blind aging nerds (such as myself) I'd be set...

lol! Much like the DRZ crowd. (sexier guys I'm sure, but it works out about the same)
oil pressure would be the biggest problem on that motor. I assume its roller bearing crank?
Either way, if you're serious....I'm always up for a challenge! But I make no promises

I have no idea. It's whatever the original R71 was back in '39.
But "wikipedia*, of all places, seems to think so:
"...Whilst the outward appearance of the engine is the same as before, quality control techniques have use of better alloying and casting, better engineering tolerances, better paint and chrome whilst retaining the advantage of continuity with the inherently balanced design of a horizontally opposed flat twin engine with roller bearings in a solid frame..."
Linky:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMZ-Ural
...I have the maintenance video DVD -- it's great fun, lots of bitter Euro dance music on the soundtrack while the serious-looking russians change the oil, adjust the valves, etc.
So, um, er...how much would a turbo for a Ural cost? This would be my best guess at a similar design:
http://www.rbracing-rsr.com/bmwturbos.htm#r100
...which, at least, is not an oilhead.

Heh...I just emailed rbr racing. I'll see if they can contain themselves and recommend a kit.

A little, turbo-charged birdie said to me:
Quote
...We absolutely do not want to get involved
on either an advice or any other basis.
Use a Garrett GT12 turbo for about 60 hp.
The rest is up to you and your associate...
...I think this would have to move to the "manly things"
thread if I even tried it. Which I probably won't. But
it's fun to think about...I think

I assume that little note came from mr. turbo?
I agree with their assessment on turbo choice. The GT12 is whats on my DRZ, and its basically the perfect turbo for anything that makes up to 60 or so HP naturally asperated.
The problem is its spendy, but there's no way around it. There are no alternatives really. The turbo alone runs around $700
I would take a guess of $2500 or so for such a project. But depending on some important things, such as mounting options, oil pressure, it might not even be feasible.
