I made a minor tweak to the route and it's now as final as it's going to be. Here is a link to the Garmin GDB file:

www.motoroads.net/BW400/Blackwater400-Final.gdb

If you have a Garmin GPS, I would recommend bringing it and having the route loaded on it. There are a LOT of turns... It will be a small group, so we should all stay together, but it could be handy in the event someone wants to take an escape route to skip a section.

Will you have eaten dinner before arriving? Just wondering if I should wait for your arrival to eat or not. I expect to be out of work by 3:30 or 4pm, on the road about 5pm and arriving there about 6pm.

Greg (stainlesscycle1), Garry, and I arrived at Hidden Valley last night and had a nice dinner together.  We woke up this morning to rain and it doesn't look like it will get any better throughout the day.

Morning after breakfast:

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c132/doog71/Motorcycle%20Rides/2009/09-26-09/DSCN2030.jpg

The arrow indicates the direction of the weather while the oval indicates the general riding area of today's 212 miles of dirt (mud) roads:

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c132/doog71/Motorcycle%20Rides/2009/09-26-09/Blackwater400Weather.jpg

And thanks to a nail, my day ended early.  Stupid TUBE tires!!!!   Mad2

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c132/doog71/Motorcycle%20Rides/2009/09-26-09/DSCN2037.jpg

Garry and Greg pressed on towards Canaan Valley while the bike and I were given a ride home by a flatbed.   Sad

I phoned a few local bike shops in an attempt to get a tube installed today, but no one was open.

No spare tube / no tire irons / no air compressor.

PS... AAA RV+ coverage.  The tow truck didn't cost me a dime today.  Now I can deal w/ the tire in my own garage.

I can guess what your next purchases will be...  Sad

Bummer. Can you borrow some tire irons and patch the tube to ride tomorrow?

Actually, I could.  I have access to a tire changer (Freight Harbor) that I purchased w/ a few other guys.  But, I would prefer to replace the tube instead of repairing it.

Regardless, the ride is off.  Out of the three bikes we started with today, a second was taken out of commission as the Moto Morini ended up being put in the back of a pickup truck with carb issues.  Garry didn't want to continue solo (which would not be recommended), so he turned around back to Pittsburgh.

Today wasn't meant to me.  Another day.

That reminds me of my brother in law. On a trip a few years ago the crimped end of the battery cable on his Harley Davidson broke off and the bike quit running. By the time I noticed that hunk of shit wasn't behind me anymore and turned around to locate him, he already had his HD dealer map out and was on the phone setting up a tow. I couldn't believe it. With a couple simple tools and about five minutes of work we were back riding again. I don't understand the "credit card and AAA" style of touring. If I'd let him be towed he would have missed at least a day of riding over a simple problem. A flat tire on a dual sport is an extremely common problem that a few common tools could fix, and you wouldn't miss out on the rest of the trip that way.

Maybe I'm being harsh and it sucks that you had to miss out on some of the ride you guys have been planning for quite some time. The lack of preparedness and tools just kind of boggles my mind.  Shrug

I had 3 tire irons, a tube patch kit and a 12V compressor with me. But that doesn't mean I know how to use them efficiently. Last time I tried to change a rear tire using just hand tools, I gave up after 4 hours and a destroyed (expensive) heavy-duty tube. Some day I need someone that knows what they are doing (tried the Neduro thread, didn't help) guide me through the process.

Oh, I understand it...though I  Lol at those types.  That's not adventure.

Exactly.  I rode 1,600 miles home from Central Colorado with a slow leak stemming from riding this sort of shit:
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h235/Radsport2er/6212_1136518765641_1007507059_30384.jpg
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h235/Radsport2er/FinalCO.jpg

I *DID* have an air compressor and *DID* have a tire iron - though I didn't have any tubeless slime, but I do now - and it didn't matter, because with the air compressor, I got it home on my own.  For the record, Your brother in law would have been completely fucked if he had his Harley up there (but if he did, he wouldn't go thirsty, because I would buy him a soda - WORD).

This isn't harshness.  They forgot the 6 p s and that is cause for a bitch slapping.

Too bad I wasn't there we would have had that fixed (as R.Markus mentioned) in 20 minutes - if that.
