I am thinking you have a lot of dirt riding in your future.
Closest "good" paved roads will be in Arkansas, I think.

oh man, whiteman afb in the great state of misery...i was born there and there is a reason i dont currently reside there anymore! actually, you can find nice scenery north of there towards iowa, but the roads are grid. quaint rolling hills and nice backroads. watch out for slow moving farm equipment in those parts. go south towards springfield and branson and you will run into ozark country. there are some nice twisty roads there, continuing into northern and western arkansas. watch out for gray hair drivers, branson is their mecca.

These two shots were taken not very far from Whiteman. Pretty typical of the area, I'd say. Rolling hills, some curves--nothing challenging. Not much traffic on the back roads. It's a pretty area.

There are some nice roads through northwest Missouri but your best bet would be to head southeast to the ozark area. That'll be the best area to ride. Im from northwest mo and currently live in KC. Not alot here but I have to admit it is a nice place to be to start a trip. Good central location for a journey to almost anywhere in the country. No wonder the start of the oregon trail was here!

You will only be 2 hours from some very good motorcycling roads near the lake of the ozarks. South East of Jefferson City and East of the lake the roads get twisty, although sometimes are busy with vacationers pulling boats. Not sure if it still going but there was a budding sport bike club out of Jefferson City starting to plan some rides and recording where the best roads were around central Missouri. It has been a year since I talked to any of them, took them to our secret favorite road and the head guy of the club crashed following us, after that I felt out of place with them, and some are squids but they might have some road info.

thanks for the info... i guess i definitely have the bike to go the distance to get some decent roads. i was thinking of still selling the FJR and get an SS cause of the race tracks that will be MUCH closer to us compared to Ellsworth AFB. it was cheaper/easier to just head to my brother's house (Plymouth, WI), prep the bike, and head on over to the track (Road America) the next morning, 2 miles down the road.

Yes, you have to go a few miles for the good roads... but the REALLY good roads aren't too much further.

Since you are on an FJR, I'm sure you wouldn't mind the extra time it takes to get to SE Missouri...like around Potosi and points south to the border of Arkansas..and further.

I would just like to say a few things. I found this post via google.
I am the guy who crashed behind scramblerracer.
1.) I wouldnt have crashed had your buddy not slammed his brakes on in the middle of a corner, forcing me to grab mine full lean. If he wouldnt have went too hot into the corner(which he really didnt, he just got scared and grabbed a handful of brakes) then I would have negotiated the corner absolutely fine, just like I always do~ Not an excuse, but you make it sound like I just cant ride, which I think you know is not true :P
2.) I dont know how many squids we have. Most all of our guys are responsible, competent riders. If you remember the day I crashed I was the one wearing full gear, while you guys where in jeans and the like~ If you just peruse over our forum I think you will see the atmosphere of safety and maturity that we try and exude to all current and prospective forum members.
3.) Anybody is welcome at midmoriders. It is not really a club perse, but just a meeting place and ride setup for central missouri, and we do have several members around whiteman, and there is even a really good route ride planned today very close to you, so check us out, and dont let scramblerracer turn you away with his description of us
4.) scramblerracer, thanks for the ride into town that day, you should come back and be part of the forum a bit again, dont be scared, motorcycles crash sometimes, it happens to the best of us.
edit: there are a TON of good roads around you, especially if you get up just a little bit north, or south of where you are at.

Iron and Reynolds Counties are fairly close and loaded with great roads. Lots of float rivers, camping and quaint small towns, too. A bit farther from Knob Noster than Lake of the Ozarks but a lot less morons with too much money.

well if you weren't following him so close you would of been able to see what was happening and taken the proper evasive move.

i was actually quite a bit back, he nearly stopped in the road, plus overgrown vegetation blocked my view of the corner, so as I came around the corner he was right there~.
again, not an excuse, I did wreck, just saying it was a major contributer. I didnt have to grab a fistfull of brake, it was all a split second combination of many things, much of which can be completely contributed to me :P. Like I said, even the best of us wreck, I know many a competent and skilled rider who has met pavement at the hands of a hard brake in front of them~
But forget all that, my point is that dont let a fluke accident discourage the original poster from checking us out at MMR, and picking our brains for so many beautiful routes around here
~

well, just a thought, but if people are goin that fast in a group that you don't have enough time to react (yes, i know, curve with vegetation), i slow down and go a pace that i have time to react. so i guess i would be pretty much at the back of the pack and everyone would be waiting on me. on the track, different story. not that i'm against a certain group or whatever, just my thoughts. i've rode with groups that go way above my comfort limit to try to hang with em. not worth it to me. i don't feel the need to do double or more, over the speed limit to have fun. but i also don't ride like grandma or most pirates. i am patiently waiting to check out the area once i get my bike. of course, once the newborn shows up in Dec (hopefully), my riding will be strictly kept to commuting.

I think this thread is loosing its purpose, which is to give road recommendations to our Service member friend.
People wreck, hopefully they get up, as it sounds like this guy did. Be thankful and let's move on.
There are great roads in your area but be careful as you get closer to the lake of the Ozarks. Trucks with boats going too fast through twisty and rolling hills crossing the center line most of the time.
Thank you for your service, even if you have to suffer Central Mo. it could be worse.

If you go just east of the lake of the ozarks, there are so many good roads between I-44 and I-70. 42 from Iberia is a good way to branch out, also almost any route leading to Jefferson City and up to Hermann, 42, 63, 17, 94, 100, I could go on and on.
Just a ton of good roads out here, with a ton of good scenery, no matter what your riding style. We have a small group of guys that run out of Lebanon who know alot more about whats very close and local to you. Geforce, f3racer, and Bigdaddy. They will know the county roads close to you and If its anything like what we hav ea little farther north, they will be lots of fun.
Some websights with routes and good roads we use;

Cody, I wasn't trying to say you can't ride, just that I haven't had much contact with you guys after that
2.) I dont know how many squids we have. Most all of our guys are responsible, competent riders. If you remember the day I crashed I was the one wearing full gear, while you guys where in jeans and the like
Yes you were in full leathers and we were in riding jackets, jeans, riding boots, gloves, and helmets. We also weren't dragging knees
~ If you just peruse over our forum I think you will see the atmosphere of safety and maturity that we try and exude to all current and prospective forum members.
You and the other full leather guys are not who I am talking about, but after hanging out on the forum and at woodys a few times I heard enough about how so and so was doing standup wheelies in front of the mall, or running 150mph down 54 towards the lake. Most of the older guys I met were cool, I just don't understand the younger generation I guess
3.) Anybody is welcome at midmoriders. I have since moved to Northern Iowa, and have started riding more long distance, destination rides since there are few curves here, plus I hate crashes- I am just glad you were ok
edit: there are a TON of good roads around you, especially if you get up just a little bit north, or south of where you are at.
