fjr 1300 questions

Hi all, I am considering as a next bike the 06 or newer FJR. My main concern, since I will not easily get a test ride, is passenger comfort. I currently have a triumph trophy and we have  windshield buffeting issues which we are finding difficult to resolve. So how is the airflow for a passenger? She is 5 foot six and I am 6 ft. We have been on a vfr and had a zzr1200,  both of which she preferred because the air hitting her was smooth and not rattling her head like the Trophy does. Any pillion observations are much appreciated.

the stock windscreen on the FJR is a little short and narrow for passenger comfort but that can easily be rectified by adding an aftermarket screen.

I have a Cee Bailey +2+2 with flip windscreen on my '05 FJR and my wife says its all good in the passenger seat.

It will definitely be better than any of the bikes you mentioned.

An aftermarket windscreen is a pretty common FJR farkle for one and two-up riders.  One of the mags just did a "long term" report and the rider said his passenger was happier when they added the Yamaha touring shield.  On the fjr boards, Cee Baileys of various sizes and V-Streams are a lot more popular.

It really seems to depend on the couple, but if it isn't right, there are lots of options to fix it that aren't that expensive.

Had both a VFR and a ZZR and my wife like the VFR better as a passenger.  She didn't like the ZZR SEAT, said it made her slide forward all the time.  I liked the ZZR better WAAAAAY more power!

Your wife should be pretty comfortable after just installing a new windscreen.  I've tried quite a few over the various FJR's that I've owned.  The Vstream works great.  My wife thought the passenger seat was just fine, but I have also changed that over to a Bill Meyer saddle.

Good luck with you search.  Personally I dont' think you can go wrong with the FJR, but there are a few other fine choices too.

I can offer an opinon on the 2003-2005 model for passenger comfort.
   Last year we rode two up to the FJR rally in Colorado. Gone two and a half weeks.  This year we rode to the FJR rally in Naksup BC. We spend three weeks on the road.  This year she sat on a russell seat as last year it was a stock seat.
 I am 5'7" she is 5'

I find my airflow disrupted with my 5' 6" wife on the back, but she doesn't complain. It isn't bad for me most of the time but if the wind is blowing just right it causes turbulence on my helmet.

I have a 4+2 with flip and perfect for passengers and I.

Stock screen on the FJR was designed around a 5'1" 120 lb Japanese man. I am convinced.


Seriously, I have not found another bike I like better than the FJR (yet at least).

Had both.. for your question only...for my passenger vfr is much better for not  buffeting , but once  we chopped 2-3 inches or so off the  fjr it worked  almost as good. Better for me too! Got some nice airflow and worked better  for us than the  large shield I tried.

My passenger likes the FJR better then any bike I have ever owned. Wide glide, Connie 1000, bandit 1250, Katana 750, Gsxr 1000, and a whole long list of many others.

None of the camping gear I've strapped to my rear seat has complained about either the seat or wind buffeting.

On the other hand, I did have a stuff sack that I put on top of some stuff strapped to the luggage rack, and the end of the drawstring got a little frayed. I guess that's a complaint, but it was riding on the luggage rack so it's not quite applicable.

The couple of times I've had passengers on the FJR, they haven't complained about buffeting, but the longest ride for a passenger was only like 50 miles.

My wife is 5' 5" and slim. She says the FJR is very comfortable until you get to 90 mph. After that, she tucks her head into my neck and it's not very comfortable for me.    I've got the stock screen on my 2008.

I started with my stock 07 FJR with a Limnar lip on the stock windshield and it work awesome. When the windshield was in the full up position my wife and I were both in very quiet air. Now we are not tall people so your results may be different. I now have the Yamaha touring windshield and it works good but not as good as the limnar lip. I also tried a Ceebailey's +2 taller than stock and so far nothing has giving me the quiet clean air the lip did. I got rid of the lip just because of the looks of it. But so far it has worked the best for me and it was only $70. I also installed the passenger lowering footpeg brackets and my wife has loved that. So what I'm trying to say here is that there is so many aftermarket parts to customize your FJR you can't go wrong with that bike
