I can't make it this year, but Jim puts on an excellent rally.

Anyone who's gotten the itch to try a long distance rally as a result of following all the IBR newsfeeds, the Cape Fear 1000 is a great chance to do so, and you'll see many IBR veterans at the finish banquet. Some of my favorite rally memories have been on the CF1K.

I've ridden the Cape Fear twice, and I agree with Rocket Cowboy. Great rally and draws a great group of riders. If you're thinking about giving this kind of riding a shot, this is a great place to start.

Doesn't registration usually start in early January?

One of the great things about the Cape Fear is it's several rallies in one.  Choose the mini-rally to get a small taste, pick the start point nearest home for the 24 hour, or choose your start based on the expected weather.  Any one you choose, a good time is guaranteed!

I'm smokin' hard on this one.  There's still a couple-three days of vacation left on the books for the year and this rally has a great reputation for fun and challenges.

I'm really tempted to do this one in 2010. I'm already planning on the Not Superman Rally. Hopefully I can find time for both.

Looking at the results from last year, a LOT of great riders did it - likely in preparation for the IBR. Lots of DNFs and DNSs too.

There's always an excellent field in this one. And the big DNF rate last year was because of an unusual format -- you had to hit a mandatory number of bonuses each day and the low score won. That made it really hard to have a bail out plan if things went bad.

It's a great rally. Try and fit it in.

I've ridden this 3 times. Always a good time and a challenge with something new every year. Last year's complete change in bonii and scoring threw many guys. I pulled out at last minute with family concerns (and possibility of being in WV mountains in middle of the night although Jim assured me there was a way!!) With my route that I thought was just OK, I would probably have been a DNF also. I should ahve gone down for dinner anyways.

Registration is open to previous year's entrants early at end of December or so by invitation. Any remaining open spots are then open in early January. It fills very fast.

Important info, from the LDRider list.....
Quote
Cape Fear 1000 Rally
April 16-18, 2010

Although public registration does not open until January 8, 2010, the Coastal Carolina Rally Krewe once again invites everyone on the list to make plans to join us in Wilmington, North Carolina the weekend of April 16-18, 2010 for the Cape Fear 1000 Rally. Funds raised from this event will be sent to benefit the Victory Junction Gang Camp in Randleman, NC for chronically ill children. More details about the Victory Junction Gang Camp can be found at www.victoryjunction.org. In addition, we will be having a special collection for the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation will all monies collected to be donated in memory of Eddie James.

Registration will again be handled through Jason Jonas' Ride Master program and can be found on and after January 8, 2010 at http://jasonjonas.com/rides or through a link which may be found on the website. Many thanks to Jason for making this great tool available.

While we no longer offer a Ride-To-Eat option as a part of the event due to the number of riders that participate each year, the main parts of the weekend still remain: there will be a 24-hour (more or less) Rally event; a Mini-Rally; a BBQ Feast Saturday evening at the Finisher's Banquet ; and, a Farewell Breakfast on Sunday morning.

The complete schedules should be posted on the website by the end of December, but briefly:

The 24-hour Rally will begin at 11:00 a.m. (Eastern Time) on Friday the 16th . Each rider will choose from one of three possible starting locations: Auburn, NY; Bowling Green, KY; or, Lake Placid, FL, and all riders will be due in Wilmington, North Carolina, not later than 3:00 p.m. on Saturday the 17th.

The Mini-Rally will begin with rider check-in at 6:00 p.m. on Friday evening, followed by an informal gathering from 7:00-9:00 p.m. The Rider's Meeting begins at 5:30 a.m. on Saturday the 17th, riders will be released at 6:00 a.m. and are due back not later than 4:00 p.m.

The BBQ Feast will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday evening with awards, recognition of riders rally results being announced at 8:30 p.m, or as soon thereafter as the scores can be tallied.

Look for all the details to be posted to the website at www.capefear1000.com by the end of December.

Right now I'm thinking Auburn, NY.  But we'll see.......

Hmmm.... Auburn is right down the road from me, and a look a the calendar seems to indicate that weekend is tentatively do-able. I wanted to give it a go the first year and couldn't make it - I told my neighbor and best riding buddy about it - he participated that year and had a blast.

I'll recommend that anyone wishing to ride in this year's CF1000 register ON Jan 8. This rally fills up THAT fast.

I'm not participating, but I plan to volunteer again this year... hopefully I'll actually MAKE IT to Wilmington on a fully functioning bike this time.

Apparently, there were only two slots left after the returning riders registered in Bowling Green.  I didn't get either one of them.   Sad  Don't have enough vacation time saved to get into the Florida start either.  Y'all have fun.

I just read on the LD rider list that the field was filled and registration was closed 11 hours and 34 minutes after open registration started. Holy Moley!!   EEK!

Glad I had a returning rider slot.

Wow!  That's gotta be some kind of record!  Looking at the NY starter list, I'm gonna have a hard time just climbing to the top of the bell curve.   Shrug

No kidding! What a field.  I think my streak of top 10s just ground to a halt. If I finish in the top half of that group, I'll be happy.

This will be my first rally since last year's Cape Fear.

Depending on how things go - I might make teh VOID?   Not likley as #3 is due in late sept. so my rally days are a while away.

Have care in NC - the LEOs really like us you rally riders there. Crazy

I think we represented for STN!

Of the New York starters, guitardad finished 5th and I finished 8th. STN was 20% of the top ten!

Stormcrow finished his first rally and we may have another addict on our hands.

Lionlady was part of the outstanding staff and should be along shortly to post a group photo.

EDIT: Dang. I robbed Chaz of a place. He finished 5th, not 6th.

Ed. guitardad finished 5th, not 6th.  Rolleyes

Okay. Here are a couple pics. The four S-T.net'ers:

stormcrow, guitardad, squeezer, and in front, me.

And Squeezer and Rick Miller (Rally Bastard Master of the Mason-Dixon 20/20) sharing the "treats" that Rick brought.

Only one serious mishap: Jim Owens lost it in a corner somewhere out in Kentucky, hit smacked his leg on the guard rail with his bike in the middle of the night. Open compound fracture to his tibia. Beyond that, I don't remember any other details, other than he was transported from the local hospital to the university hospital. His bike, etc have been taken care of. Keep him in your thoughts for a speedy recovery.

Other than that it was, as always, great time!

Awesome job STNers!!!!!

Great nres about the finish.  Can we get details about the rally?  Any road kill or old houses that needed tagging?

That news about Jim is aweful - prayers that he is ok.

I am seriously thinking about trying to get a late entry to the MD2020, but I doubt it.  With a new child due mid sept, the VOID is almost certainly out.

No road kill or old houses, although I did hear of someone who "took the bait" and tried to get to the Rock and Roll HOF in Cleveland before the gift shop closed!  Jim kept it straightforward this time, so only a few DNF's.  But some of the Auburn, NY starters who didn't scoot directly south got clobbered by a storm in southern PA.  I saw it off to the west as I crossed into Maryland - it looked nasty.

Best thing was seeing Scott LaShier  at scoring, feeling "uncomfortable" but on his feet, walking around.

... and from the LDRider list:
Quote from: "L3"
Spoke to Diane Owen yesterday. She told me that she and "Gimpy" would be
headed home today.

So our prayers go out to Jim, but it sounds like he's well on the mend already.

Well damn, Perry!  If you'd posted up in this thread earlier I would've had a clue!

Seriously, it was great meeting you, along with the rest of the "Bay" contingent.  One of the things I enjoy most about these rallies is meeting riders and swapping lies stories.

She had to plug a flat tire right before the start, and the plug failed within a few hours of the finish.  Not enough time to recover before she was time-barred.  Just bad luck, ya know?

PB  Thumbsup

I have an eternal conflict with that rally. There's a conference I'm required to attend that always falls on the same weekend. It's a damn shame. I really like the rallybastards for that one and I'm sure they put on a good show.

I'm actually about to take a brief hiatus from rallying. After the Mason-Dixon, I'm going to take a couple of years off so I can spend more time riding with younger son. Once he hits college, I'll probably get back into it.

So, PB, are you doing the MD 20-20?

Sounds like another good reason for me to do the MD2020 this year.

Boss said yes and there were still rooms avaialble at the hotel - I am in!

Prepare to be amazed by my mediocre finish.
