I've stayed at Inn of the Hills before and it is a nice place.

I will see all of you there.   This should be a good time to ride in the Hill Country.

I am a member of www.twtex.com and will post there.

Quote
April 8 – 11, 2010 or April 22 – 30, 2010 but are sold out on April 15 – 18, 2010

I am leaning toward April 8 - 11th.

Any comments??

2010 or 2021?  (I'm sorry, I just can't seem to help myself sometimes.)

You had previously mentioned the week after Easter which would be the 8th - 11th and that's the weekend I thought you meant before I went to enter the dates on the calendar.  Either weekend works for me at this point.  IIRC, it was posited earlier that the pretty flowers will be better earlier in April?

I will be in Kerrville this weekend for a Motorcycle Sport Touring Assoc. rally.

Weather is supposed to be low 70's and gloriously sunny with low humidity.

In other word - PERFECT.

I will give you a report when I get back.

went to the MSTRA rally and it was good. Weather and roads were PERFECT.

Event was made even better when I went to the rally dinner and won the big prize of the evening - a $200 Park N Move garage bike mover from www.legalspeeding.com

Make sure you add Buzzies Bar-B-Q as a "must visit" place to eat.

It's less than a mile from the rally hotel.

NEWSFLASH!!!

STN member jimmystartup is back with Desteenation!!! After a nightmare of "stuff", he is now back at the helm of our best shirt provider. If there's going to be a shirt made for this event, I highly recommend dropping him a note  Thumbsup  No one has better quality, he works closely with other STNer's on design requirements and he'll ship them individually to buyers or combine it into one destination shipment.

Hey JTM ,

How do you like the Buell?

I love it, it is the perfect Hooligan Touring bike.

Just a warn from TWT:
Quote
Be warned. There are at least two Cruiser Clubs that will be in the Hill Country that weekend.

Star Riders of Houston is having their spring meet in Bandera that weekend but the big one is the Texas Southern Cruiser's Kevin Hill Memorial Twist Off. Mr Hill was killed in a bike accident in the Hill Country about 10 years ago and this is a very popular ride.

I checked with the Inn of the Hills group sales dept today and they say nobody has made a reservation. Crazy
Did anyone make the reservation without mentioning ST-Net group? Confused

Please let me know what is going on and if changes need to be made. DeadHorse

Badfast FJR and I are in.  I guess I need to get off my a$$ and make reservations.

That is two confirmations, let me know when you make the reservations/

Rooms will be held until March 9th. Make your reservations now if you are planning on staying at the Host hotel.

If you are staying somewhere else, again please let me know where. The place with the most riders will become a rally point.

Thanks

One of the most popular rides in the area is called the "Three Sisters". It will definately be on my ride list.

Here is a write-up.

another ride is to go up to Fredricksburg(great microbrewery there) and up to Enchanted Rock.
http://www.motorcycleroads.com/routes/SouthWest/TX/TX_30.shtml
and add this route to it and have a lot of fun.

Any other rides you guys want to mention?

if you are going from Kerrville to Fredericksburg, once you get into F'burg take FM 965 north to Enchanted Rock - a great hilly, twisty road with a magnificant view of Enchanted Rock.

Once you get to Enchanted Rock and go by it, go on out to HW 16 and turn right (south) and go back about 10 miles to FM 1323 and turn right on it to go to Willow City. At Willow City, turn left (north) on the Willow City loop and take it for about 15 miles back to HW 16.

The Willow City loop is a slow speed tour down a one lane ranch road into a great canyon with some of the oldest rocks in Texas.  You will see deer, turkey, hogs and cattle running loose on the free range road.

These are both great rides. I will post up more routes this week.

LOTS and LOTS of good riding in the Texas Hill Country.

I am riding down this weekend to get a look-see at Kerrville. I haven't been there in 8 years so I have forgotten a lot about it.
I will report back preferred places to meet and rally points.

I have the Three sisters down as a preferred ride and those that are going that know the area can suggest more rides.

For those who have never been down there and want to see the sites, we will plan a trip into San Antonio (Alamo area).

I just got back from a 3 day round trip (scouting) to Kerrville. I  haven't been there in  20 years.

It is incredible - The 3 Sisters Ride will be worth the trip alone.
The only way I think I could beat it was go to the Dragons Tail.
I think it is better than the ride from Silver City to Alpine.
Plan to do it on Friday, cause there are usually cops patrolling it on the weekends.

In the middle of that ride is the Motorcycle Museum in Vanderpool - $5.00 and worth it. It is run by an Austrailian and he serves some great lunches.

The Inn of the Hills is definately a good choice for those who can afford it. There are still plenty of rooms.
If anyone has made a reservation there and did not put it under Sports Touring Net name, let me know what your price is cause I want all of you to get the best deal they offer.

The food there is unbelievable. I know when you think buffet, what comes to mind but Golden Corral, but, it is nothing of the sort. They have a buffet for every meal, and it is first class and affordable.

We have the party room at the Inn of the Hills  reserved for Saturday night, and I am working on suggestions for Thursday and Friday nite.

Some history of Enchanted Rock is a Famous Texan, Bigfoot Wallace, mentioned in several Davy Crockett stories, was part of a Texas Ranger company that defeated the Comanches there.

AND....Be careful about riding at night the deer are more plentiful than rabbits and squirrles and will run accross the road in herds in front of you.

More later on restaurants,

Bob

Bob - sounds like you have a good trip to the Hill Country.

About the warning on deer at night - it's not just at night, you MUST watch for them at all hours of the day and everywhere.

The Inn of the Hills has a great restaraunt.

One of the "must ride" routes in that area is to take HW 16 south out of Kerrville to 337 through Leakey and Vanderpool over to Camp Wood and then  HW 55 north out of Camp Wood to RockSprings where you you take 377 to 41 then come back on 335, which is in my opinion is the best of the "FM 335, 336,337 Sisters".

HW 55 makes it way up out of the river valley up onto a mesa and is a great, high-speed sweeper of a road with magnificant views and is an AWESOME road to ride.

When you come back on 335, which runs along and across the river and is like a roller coaster ride, you will go by a couple of ranches where they have all kinds of exotic animals like giraffe, kangaroo, camels, antelope and other stuff.

Be sure to stop at the Frio Canyon Motorcycle Stop on the north side of Leakey on FM 337 headed out to Camp Wood - they have a good grill and place to get "The Sisters" souvenoir shirts. Its a popular stopping place while out in the Hill Country and a good place to sit and chill for a minute.

http://www.friocanyonmotorcyclestop.biz/

Another interesting stop is the StoneHenge/Easter Island replica near Hunt, Texas and is on the way back to Kerrville from The Sisters.

http://www.legendsofamerica.com/TX-StonehengeII.html

As for places for us to eat on Thursday or Friday evening I suggest you check out Buzzies Bar-B-Q   Thumbsup Thumbsup Thumbsup in Kerrville about a mile from the Inn of the Hills - GREAT Bar-B-Q.

Damn, gotta stop talking about all these routes, getting myself all jacked up about riding out there and can't do anything about it cause I am at work.

You folks who have never been to the Texas Hill Country are in for some good riding.

The favorite outfit for the weekend will be Helmet, Jacket, boots, and gloves.
It ain't no fashion show! LOL

Really, that decision will be a last minute thing, cause you know how the weather changes.
Remember, you will be 300 miles closer to the Equator there.

On the 3 day trip I took this week, I left here on Sunday morn, it was chilly, but I knew it would warm up, so I did not take my liner. It did warm up to 82 degrees by the time we reached San Antonio. The next morning is was damp and coolish but got warm fast again. Monday night, it started raining and shortened our ride somewhat. Holed up in the motel in Kerrville, we waited for the rain to stop. When it did, we left for FT Worth, but got rained on again for about 100 miles. It was cold light rain, and I had wished I had taken my liner. I wanted to stop at wal mart and get a sweatshirt. It warmed up my late afternoon when we got within 80 miles of Ft Worth.

So .....Be Prepared for anything. Like they are predicting SNOW this weekend here in The DFW area.

See you there. Where you staying?

Trust me it won't be a fashion show. That is an inside joke, that GilaMonster will  understand. I have enough riding to gear to sink a ship. I have only missed 3 days of riding this year.

Inn of the Hills or whatever it is. The only one of these Bill and I have missed is the one last year.

I'll see if I have room for some extra oil for GilaMonster's BMW.

Too bad you can't get there until Friday night.
There will be a lot of great rides on Friday.

This is my third in a row. I remember the Oil think from Alpine Tx two years ago.

If you don't remember me, I had the 94 BMW K1100LT - Red.

Last year was a great ride out in New Mexico and Arizona.

Glad you won't miss this one.

I have ridden all of that area many times and I need to use my vacation time wisely. As it is, I'll be gone every weekend in April and the first two weekends in May. All of them are riding events including spending a week in Moab dual sport riding.

You need to come out some Tuesday night to one of these:

I can't wear the same Jacket as last time. Lol

By the head count I have, there will be a lot less than last year. Maybe only a dozen or so, but I can't be sure. Headscratch

I'm still mulling this over. The little GS may be ready for this, but I need to check it over this week.

Any ideas yet on dinner times/places? I can't afford IotH, so I'll probably be at some other Kerrville hotel and will need to meet others at the IotH or designated dinner spot. I'd arrive Friday night, leave Sunday morning.

We have the party room at the Inn of the Hills  reserved for Saturday night, and I am working on suggestions for Thursday and Friday nite. We might want to make that the restaurant for each night cause the buffet is different every night.
I think I set it up for 7:00 PM - about dark. They have a tremendous buffet there and it isn't expensive.

We are starting with a case of beer in the parking lot on Thursday nite. I will be going down a day early with Soonerstan.

My contact information will be my cell - 817-205-1315

OK, here is my list of roads you MUST ride in the Kerrville area.

HW 16 south of out Kerrville to FM 337 in Medina - 16 has the only switchbacks in the area

the Three Sisters - FM 335, 336 and 337 - because the are the Holy Grail in the area

HW 55 north from Camp Wood (end of FM 337) to Rock Springs, then 377 north to HW 41 east then take FM 336 back south to Camp Wood.  HW 55 goes up on the plateau and it full of wonderful high speed sweepers.

HW 83 north out of Leakey to HW 39 back to Kerrville - HW 39 has about ten low water crossings and is very scenic

Stonehenge replica on HW 1340 just west of Hunt.

Eat breakfast at the always popular breakfast motorcyclist stop in Bandera - the Old Spanish Trail cafe, take HW 173 south out of Kerrville to get there.

Stop and have a cup of apple ice cream at the only Apple Orchard in Medina on HW 16

Yeah, they say two tents per campsite and Scott's going with me.  Campsites were $15/night for water-only, and she said I'm in a "riverside site".  Great to hear you're going!!  I plan on leaving home around 8:45 AM tomorrow and taking I-10 a good part of the way.  Haven't decided whether I want to go north of San Antonio, or through it and up from Hondo.  The Hondo route is my favorite for getting to Lost Maples, but kind of off track for Kerrville-Schreiner.  It would get me to Mac and Ernie's around lunch, though.

Mac and Ernie's:  http://www.twtex.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5837  well worth the stop, at least they have been every time I was there.  Concours for this trip, V-Strom maybe to Junction in June for LDDave's.  Heading out 45 to 10 at this point, then probably straight to San Antonio, on through 90 to Hondo and up 462 from there.

What was a smokin' great ride home from Kerrville turned into a long day for Bill and I.

About 45 miles from home the front Dunlop Road Smart on my ST1300 delaminated at about 75MPH just outside Cleburne, TX.  A buddy of mine from Fort Worth was nice enough to come pick me with his truck. Bill waited with me until I was loaded up and moving again.  It would have really sucked if the tire went south down on one of the tight turns in the Hill Country.

Today was the first time in 5 years and 72K miles that my ST has been on a trailer. A sad day indeed.

good thing that tire didn't go down on one of the twisties..

I rode east out of Kerrville in light rain/heavy mist for the first 90 miles then it was a good ride home

Will have to get those great pictures of the wildflowers posted up on Monday.

Good rally guys...

Hey everyone.  We (Cricketmrs and I) made it home on Sunday.  We had a great time at the meet!! Good to see everyone again.  We put in another 400 mi day on Sat after a tour around the area; Llano for BBQ at Coopers with the guys (fantastic food); and Dublin (DP for the wife.)  Smile  Spent the night in Lawton OK so we had only a short ride home this morning.

Bikerider, sorry to hear about the tire trouble - that's never fun.

Wanted to say THANKS to Bob for organizing the event.  The hotel was nice and in a great area for riding.  Also another thanks to Mike for leading us around the area into some of the best riding we've seen in awhile.  And one more to Stan making up the three who were nice enough to slow down for Pam - not to mention the helpful hints on the twisties.

What a great group of guys that came out for the meet.  We really enjoyed the entire trip - can't wait for the next one.

Thanks Cricket and Pam for your good words.

1.  The real thanks goes to Mike who led us around like we were special Royalty or sumpthin.

2.  This was the best trip in my 3 years with the club and look forward to next year.

3.  For all you guys with friends with trailers, what if you were even farther out.
I joined AAA and they will tow you 100 miles to where ever you want from anywhere.

4.  SEND IN YOUR LINKS TO YOUR PICTURES, NOT THE PICTURES. I will try to get some neutral person to help judge which ones go on the calendar.

BADFAST FJR & I got back to Tucson about 11am this morning.  We had drizzle, fog, and a bit of rain from Kerrville to Fort Stockton, and then nothing but sun from Fort Stockton on.  Total round trip, including riding the hill country was just under 2,300 miles.  What a great time and swapping lies.

Bob, thanks for all your efforts and the great hotel choice.

Got home last night about 6:00 PM.Rode through light drizzle for about 35 miles out of Kerrville with Bob but the rest of the ride was great.
Major kudos to Big Bob(Kwixtar), for the great set up for this trip.Great hotel and especially great food!
Double kudos to Mike(FJRmgm) for schlepping us newcomers through some of the best roads in the area, you and Bob should be ambassadors for the Lone Star State.
It was great to see Gila Monster and BadfastFJR (The Tuscon Mafia) again.
Cricket and CricketMrs,it was nice to finally meet the pretty half of the pair Lol!
1640 miles no troubles or performance awards.

P.S. Bikerider glad your tire troubles didn't happen at speed,it was good to see you and Bill again also.

It was great meeting everybody and I guess I am going to have to come out to more of these events. I'm glad I was able to prove that Buells do exist outside of a Harley stock room, and I rolled over 3k miles.

So what was decided for next time?
