2007 GSXR's ????
«
on:
February 22, 2007, 11:28:08 AM »
I heard a nasty rumor that all the 2007 GSXR Motorcycles are now built to cut off during wheelies?? Also heard that all Suzuki bikes in the USA will be up to California Specs (Emissions, etc)??
Any Truth to these rumors??
Thanks

I had not heard those rumors, but I wouldn't be surprised if they all met California emissions. The wheelie cutoff seems a bit far fetched.

Wheelie cut off sounds dangerous. I am not one to do wheelies on the street but I can easily see getting the front wheel off the ground on a 750 or 1000 without meaning too. Motor cutting off would be too dangerous.

I wonder if it has to do with their traction control? I mean all traction control does is cut the engine off right (in really, really simple terms)?
Lifting the wheel during starts is a problem and I can see them trying to correct that.

Traction control would only be in affect if the back tire spun or was off the ground!

I said related to traction control. BMW has a system either in testing or near production that limits front end lift. I also am pretty sure that is on some of the GP bikes too.

I can't see any truth in this. I would say just a rumor.

The new GSX-R has a measure of traction control, IIRC -- I think it's a handlebar switch or something that fiddles with the ignition timing (as opposed to the standard timing retardation present in many sportbikes at and below 4th gear). As for Cali/latest Euro emissions, almost certainly yes, and as the wheelie cut-out won't exist, as such. It would pretty much be nuts.

To cut the engine when you wheelie wouldn't that slow you down?

How much would it really slow you down though? You aren't talking about having to cut the engine for long. Keeping your wheel down say, coming out of a turn, helps you keep control and that makes you faster.
On the street you would definitely lose some cool points though...

07 GSXR 1000 has 3 position power switch on the handle bar. 1. full power-track position. 2.Regular power-day to day street riding. 3. Neutered power-rain,slick,slippery conditions. Under engine boom box muffler and twin cans to meet ever increasing emission and noise regs. Most GSXR's, Busa, TL1000R, maybe S. Have reduced power in lower gears usually 1st-3rd. Mostly done through timing retard.

more from a suzuki press release:
Quote
Controlling the new 2007 GSX-R1000 is a new engine management system with massive computing power with four times the capacity of the previous models. The new ECM controls not only the fuel injection and exhaust systems but also make it possible for the rider to select from three performance settings to match riding conditions, using a three way switch mounted on the right handlebar. Engine mapping will vary for each setting and each map was developed using experience gained building racebike maps for rainy, mixed and dry conditions. Switching from map to map will be instantaneous making it possible for the rider to use different maps for different sections of the racetrack. A new self adjusting hydraulic clutch system uses a radial master cylinder and minimizes the change in clutch feel over the course of long races.
Sounds kinda cool, and maps should be pretty realistic according to the press release. But then again, is anything stock worth while?

According the linked article it has a DMS switch (drive mode selector) to change the mapping for different situations. Writer says its still power wheelies in the first three gears....

Putting a mandatory anti-wheelie switch in a GSXR would torpedo any squid sales (which I'm guessing are their biggest target for sales), however, it would be awesome for the track and for anyone that really wants to go fast coming out of a corner on a 175 hp bike.
/just make it switchable like the rest of it

I know for a fact that all models will meet CA emission regulations. That's why it went to a double can instead of a single.

So why would a squiddly left-coaster buy a GSXR in LaLa Land ? What prevents "imports"?
Excuse my ignorance; Our politicians are much less sophisticated up here.
