FJR 1300 helmet locks?
«
on:
February 22, 2007, 12:47:06 PM »
As some of you may know from kindly reading a couple of my other posts, I'm going to be renting an FJR for a few days in April, so I'm getting my ducks in a row to figure out what I need to bring with me and what the bike has on it.
Does the FJR come with any kind of helmet locking system, and can those locks be accessed when the luggage is mounted on the bike?
My Fireblade has a lock that can be accessed by raising the seat, but can't be used when bags are attached. And a friend of mine has a BMW with system cases, and he had to go out and buy these little L-shaped things that go under the luggage handles to lock a helmet to the bike... very handy.
How do you folks lock helmets to the FJR? This will be important so I don't have to carry my helmet with me when I'm off the bike sight-seeing. Thanks.

Basically there are a couple standard options I've found in my searching...
Try this:
http://www.fjrowners.ws/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=3401&highlight=helmet+lock
It explains the most popular options.
I lock mine in a case or take it. FWIW

You can lock a strap in the luggage. That is what I do.

Another option would be to buy something like this in the luggage area of a department store when you arrive in the US.
You will probably find them in the airport luggage store. They have the benefit of being able to string it through your jacket arms and secure both the helmets and jackets to the bike and stow away in your pocket whilst on the bike.
Here's a link to one of our Walmart competitiors in the US that sells them.

the answer is "no - the FJR does not have helmet locks".
Go to a dealer and get a short cable and a lock and loop the cable through the helmets.

Helmet locks are curiously absent
but I've seen several people use the mounting kit that attaches to the license plate mount or the bar end helmet locks.

Where are you renting an FJR from?! I would kill to do that instead of a car on trips w/ SO. Oh, no helmet locks. I have the locks mounted to lp frame, or use the sidebags a helmet holders too!

I have a U-shaped Kryptonite lock that fits under the pillion seat. I slip the chin guards of two helmets through the lock and bolt the whole works to the front wheel. I carry helmet covers if it looks like rain or dogs might take an interest.

You can lock the helmets on via the saddle bag locks if your fingers are nimble....

I purchased a Helmet Guardian ( license plate bar with two locks ), removed the locks and
mounted them above the license plate.
Works pretty well.

So your helmets don't rest against the exhaust?

Mounted the locks horizontally at the top of each side of
the plastic mudflap / fender.
I don't think you would touch the exhaust unless your helmet
d-ring strap was really long. Mine is at least 5-6" away.

I use "Bar Enders" (
http://www.barender.com/
) which are removable bar-end weights. They work quite well for me, as I didn't want to leave my helmet dangle alongside the exhausts, and I also didn't want to clutter up the license plate area any more than it already is. I have one on each side of the bars. They come with very sturdy cylinder locks. Mine are keyed as a matching pair, although, if you wanted, you could get separate locks/keys for each side, or just get one side with a lock and a matching dummy bar-end for the other side. They weigh about the same as the stock weights, but are polished stainless steal.
