FJR Questions
«
on:
October 21, 2009, 05:01:30 PM »
OK, so I just bought a new (new to me) 2005 FJR 1300. Took my first major trip on her today and averaged 41 MPG on what I consider to be moderate riding (not too aggressive). Bike is set up with a PC III, Two Bros. pipes, and K & N Filter.
Question 1: Is 41 MPG an average for the FJR industry wide?
Question 2: My windscreen is a Cee Bailey, and the mounting control arms seem to be a bit loose and allow the screen to buffet around. Is it typical for the FJR, or is mine developing a problem?
Thanks for your input!

Question 1: Yeah, that's pretty typical and about what I get. It can vary a lot with right wrist use. PC III users often report lower mileage than that (mine's stock).
Question 2: Can't help there. I've never ridden with a Cee Bailey. I have a V-Stream and the movement I see is very small.
You might want to try fjrforum.com. More collected wisdom on the bike than there is here.

everyone who puts a PC III on an FJR reports improved throttle response and smoother running engine - and gas mileage in the upper 30's to low 40's, which is lower than stock.
I get 45-50 mpg on my '05 without a PC III. I won't put one on because I don't want to lose gas mileage.

Mine is an 06, so it might differ. I also have an oversize shield, a Rifle. The shield moves around a fair bit - maybe an inch from serious bumps and wind gusts from oncoming trucks - and there doesn't seem to be anything loose in the mechanism. I think it has flex designed into it. Those little plastic screws would probably break if the mount was rigid. The movement was really noticeable on my first few rides, but I got used to it and I'm not aware of it anymore unless I consciously look for it.

1. My '09 has under 700 miles on it and no long trips (all beach or canyon/mountain roads) so I haven't paid much attention to mpg. Can't comment.
2. The stock FJR shield moves around a bit. The Cee Bailey's does the same. The shield is mounted with seven plastic screws so there is some flex, and of course it's motorized and that moves a bit as well. Totally normal. Pressure from high wind speed would probably stress the mechanism or crack the shield over time if there wasn't some give to it.
I imagine a taller Cee Bailey's or other "touring" shield would move even more than stock. Mine is the same size as the OEM, just tinted to match the black paint...

I get low 40s when I commute. Around 50 mpg when out of the urban core and actually riding.

I do know that I've seen gas mileage drop well below 20, but when that happens it's probably best to not be looking at the LCD screen below you

Same here, it all depends on your right wrist. Low 40s is good with the gas we get nowadays.
When I ride with my wife, I get better milage...

I ride an 06 with 30k mileage is between 35-45 depending alot on riding style and traffic and seasons, fuel consumption is higher when colder. I have a laminar lip on a stock windscreen works great, and yes it does flex some.

Yeah, that's not bad. I've gotten as high as 60 in the mountains where there's lots of downhill, and as low as 32 at 90mph on the interstate battling a cross-headwind.

I can't really say, as I have a Gen I and different brand large screen, but I'd guess it's not a problem.
Grab the screen near the top and replicate the movement, if something's loose you'll feel it.

...this bike ain't made for mpg!
Depending on your size/weight, etc is how your mileage will vary. About 40 is average for most.
I have a Cal-Sci and it flexes.
Enjoy and good luck.
