Official 2007 "Meet and Eat" Info (Sunday, April 22, Dennys Beer Barrel Pub)
«
on:
February 23, 2007, 07:44:29 AM »
Hi Folks,
I have reserved space at Dennys Beer Barrel Pub in Clearfield, PA for the 2nd Annual Region 6 "Meet and Eat". Last year we had a very nice turnout (80? 90? riders) and great spring weather. Besides STN, there was lots of interest and participation from Pittsburgh area moto forums (BikerPlanet, SteelCityRiders, SquidBusters, etc). I'm hoping the weather is just as nice and we get a great turnout this April.
There are lots of nice roads in the area to explore that I will detail in a reply in this thread.
For those not familiar with Dennys, it's a restaurant/bar that offers the world's largest hamburgers. More info about Dennys and their menu can be found at:
http://www.dennysbeerbarrelpub.com
DATE: Sunday, April 22
TIME: 11 am - 2pm
LOCATION: Dennys Beer Barrel Pub, near jct 322/879 in Clearfield, PA. Clearfield is on route I-80 in north central PA a bit east of Dubois.
NOTE: I expressed the concerns/complaints about the slow service last year and Denny said he would have a full-staff on as well as offer a Touring Special that (I guess) would be faster to make/deliver. All food is cooked-to-order and the kitchen is only so big, so expect things to be a bit slow regardless, but he'll do his best. Just relax and enjoy the company of your fellow STN-ers...
Those of you making a weekend of it and staying in Clearfield Saturday night appear to be gravitating to the Days Inn:

Here are some worthy roads to explore on your way to Dennys or after lunch. Mostly scenic sweepers with some twistier bits, but good fun. Feel free to check out my fledgling web site on PA/WV/OH roads too (
http://www.motoroads.net
).
286 - nice two lane highway that connects the suburbs east of Pittsburgh to (almost) Clearfield. Continue on 219 north, then 879 to get to Clearfield.
555 - nice 20-some miles of sweepers in elk country.
144 - scenic, remote ride thru Sproul State Forest. Kinda twisty and narrow just south of Renovo (be careful!)
120 - runs along the Sussquehanna River from St Marys to Lock Haven. Nice east of Emporium to Driftwood then decent to Renovo.
872 - mellow sweepers running north/south from 120 up to route 6 near Coudersport
879 - has some curvy bits north of i-80, specifically between Karthaus and jct 144.
Wyckoff Run Rd - 10 miles of twisty, narrow two lane. Great fun with no traffic.
Quehanna Highway - runs from Karthaus thru Piper (home of the Quehanna Boot Camp/prison farm) to jct 555. Some VERY long straights with good sightlines on the sides (for deer, elk).
If you're looking for some nice roads west of 219 and north of I-80:
62 - follows Allegheny River thru Tionesta and Tidioute to Warren
59 - takes you up to the Kinzua Dam (Scenic)
Longshore Scenic Highway - connect 59 to 321. Nice scenic ride.
666 - worth doing for the name (only) as the pavement is beat up. It'll be a nice ride if/when they ever re-pave it. Kinda sucks now.
Heart Content Rd/Pleasant Rd - the back way from Tidioute to Warren which goes past the Tidioute Overlook. Nice country road. Recommended.
Richardsville Rd/968 - connects Brookville/322 to 949. Another nice country road. Recommended.
MORE TO COME! WATCH FOR EDITS!

WOO HOO I'm in. Honestly, ANY two-lane to or from the Clearfield area is pretty much worth checking out. The thinner the line on the map the better!
Wyckoff Run Rd is a good example. General rule of thumb is any road north of I-80 will be scenic with little traffic. With the exception of 120, try to avoid the more commercialized and busy state routes like 219 and 22 as they tend to lead you directly into the larger cities and towns.

I'm there! Any interest in meeting for dinner the night before? I attended last year and only got to meet garry, Swiverstone, Vivid and Rick in the parking lot.
Edit: I may have met keystonejenks as well. Are all the overnighters staying at the Motel 8?

Last year was great especially the weather,we stayed north of route 80 and had great roads with little traffic, and hopefully Hazra has learned his lesson about how far his Bandit will go on a tank of gas.

Sweet. I just reserved a room at The Days Inn Clearfield for Saturday night. It's only $55.00 per night.
I'll see everyone there!

We stayed at Day's Inn last year and it was nice. This year I'm going out and back in the same day I need to get some longer rides in to prepare me for the trek to the dragon.

man Garry - the roads list made me
homesick
!! I grew up and lived a large part of my adult/riding life with those literally in my backyard - know them all very well...
There are (obviously) lots of outstanding roads in west/northwest NC, but there sure aren't any as good as the ones back home in PA right here around Charlotte!
Not sure if I can make it or not - 2 weeks prior I'll be home for an entire week - they might still be sick of me when the 22nd rolls around!

Last year we had a great time and the PA roads are so sweet. I don't really care for the slab and I remember I opted to leave Sunday morning and skip the burger for some nice roads home. None the less Saturday night at the bar was a blast, the Crown and Chinese food.

Well, Dennys is going for the Guinness Book of World Records with their newest creation: a 123 pound burger featuring 80 pounds of meat (cost: $379).

I didn't make it an overnight trip last year. I'm looking forward to meeting some other ST.N'rs at the Day's Inn at this one.
Last year was a blast!

Cool. I can't wait to see a black FJR, nice ride.
I haven't decided on which bike I'll take. If the weather is perfect, it will be a red Daytona 675 w/ soft side bags. If it's going to be cooler or wet, I'll be on a Blue FZ1 w/ an E33 Top Case.
Either way, I'll see you there.

Dear gawd... I didn't realize how that all sounded until now.
Well... depending on weather, the assless chaps could be an option. But, it would have to be pretty warm.
The question is, what will you be wearing Anna? Or... better yet, what are you wearing now?

I should be going barring any difficulty in buying a new bike. Id be up to split a room.
Is anyone else going to be at Denny's Saturday night? I might do the Eat part Saturday night so I can stuff myself silly/drink beer and not have to ride home overfull. Then Meet with a lighter Eat on Sunday.

Probably the Kings on route 286 again. The WWR group will probably start in Irwin or Greensburg.
If the weather is nice, I may just ride up there (the very long way) on Saturday, party/stay at the Days Inn with the out-of-towners, ride around the ANF Sunday morning, then hit up Dennys for lunch and caravan home with everyone. I'll probably take the Wee Strom and explore some dirt/gnarly roads in the ANF if I do the whole weekend...

286 in monroeville is the best option for pittsburgh folks imo. easy access for most and you're right there on 286. for me it's quicker to just head out to kittanning from home and shoot up but then i miss the groups. i plan on meeting up there but if it happens to be too cold (for me) to start, i might hold off and just head up from home later in the morning. time will tell.

Ryan and Kristen and perhaps a few other folks from SquidBusters.com will be there. It's shaping up to be a nice turnout again. If the weather cooperates, could be huge.

Slowduc, you get the OK from HQ yet?
If so we'll have to ride up together again (maybe get you home sooner this time!)

rich, as garry has confirmed, R & K are going and they have volunteered to lead the new rider/begginer speed group. ryan in front and kristen in the back doing "clean up" if i remember right. they are meeting up with most pitt folks at the meet spot on 286.
they are keeping it an option to either just reverse the route after lunch or take a slightly longer/diff. way back but i don't think they are planning on going up 144 or anything since they are leading the newer riding group

continuing one tradition and starting another.......
I just joined - this is my maiden posting on the resurrected board. I was vx800inpa before the board went under.
I'm probably going to be a Johnny-come-lately at the Meet and Eat again this year. Last year I started off the day with a drained battery but the late start turned out to have a silver lining – I met up with Doug, Fish, and Vince along the way and I've shared many an on-and-off bike grin with them and Garry since.
This year, April 22 is the date for the annual Blessing of the Bikes at Murrysville Alliance Church. I'm not religious but I've been going there for the last four years and I'm a sucker for tradition so I'll be heading there again. Huge numbers turn out and it's a really fun, friendly, good-humored event. A lot of my students are members of the church and there's a great feeling of camaraderie and sense of occasion – couldn't miss it! Well...a weather forecast of torrential downpours at noon over the eastern suburbs and sunny skies in Clearfield would change things
I'm planning to head up to the Clearfield area after the blessing and may catch up with someone (the slow talkers/slow eaters?) to ride/ride back with. I'll probably get there by around 3-ish. I'll keep my eyes posted on the planned rides to see if I can intersect with any of them.

Hmmmmm.... Sit in a parking lot with 6000 other bikes or actually RIDE.... A no-brainer for me. I ran into a buddy at Bella Luna last night that invited me to the BotB and I invited him to the Meet and Eat. Sorry for the local scheduling conflict. I picked the date based mostly on track days at BeaveRun. The previous weekend plus the two after are full of track days frequented by many regional sport/sport-touring riders (TPM, open, Euro Moto, NESBA).

Sitting? Nah....I'll be walking around admiring all the chrome and looking for ideas to farkle up the ol' vx
I've never been to a bike night at Quaker Steak etc - the BOTB and Johnstown are my two annual forays into these mega events. I'd skip Johnstown at the drop of a helmet but I'm hooked on the BOTB...

Thanks for putting this together, your scheduling makes perfect sense, Garry! I doubt too many of the BOTB folks will head for Clearfield or for Beaver Run. I'm hoping to get in a track day myself this year.
Since I'll most likely miss you guys at the Meat and Eat, I'll be looking forward to catching up with you all pretty soon afterwards for some twisty fun.

Thanks, Doug! I see that you're going up on the Saturday. You'll probably end up playing it by ear on the Sunday but if you do have definite ride plans for Sunday keep me posted and I just may be able to intersect with you.

I plan to attend unless the weather is a
total
washout.

Wouldn't it be fair to the restaurant owner to tally up an expected head count of attendees a day or so ahead of the event? By that time, weather and last minute changes of plans that may affect attendance should be in clear focus...

It's offical im in! I have my reservation made at the Day's in. I did't get to chat with many people last year due to the long wait for our food and the need to get back home. So im looking forward to pounding back a few with everyone Saturday night.
I've got my route pretty much planned. If anyone has any good roads around the area please let me know. The only for sure planned stop I have is at Kinzua Dam.

Allan: don't miss the Longhouse Scenic Byway off 59 when you're up near Kinzua Dam. It's a right turn just past waypoint 4 on your map. It runs south along the western edge of the lake. It connects to 321 which will take you south to Kane or back north along the lake to 59. Also take the small loop off the Longhouse Byway to Jakes Rocks.
For anyone wanting to make a full day out of it, here is a nice 150 mile loop you can do after lunch before riding home. It's a rather remote loop, so start with a full tank and refill in Renovo (small Texaco or something in town).
879 north of Clearfield to almost Karthaus
Straight onto Quehanna Hwy when 879 turns right at Karthaus. Follow to end at Medix Run/555
Right onto 555 in Medix Run. Follow to end in Driftwood/120
Right onto 120 east follow to Renovo (gas available)
Right on 144 south. Follow to jct 53 near Snowshoe
Right on 53 south. Follow to jct I-80
I-80 west back to Clearfield (13 miles of slab)
If it's a nice day, continue past Renovo on 120 to Hyner View State Park and ride up to the overlook. Great view. I believe there is a brown state park sign on 120 where you turn left to go to the park. Then double back to Renovo and pick up 144. Adds 24 miles total to the trip.

Hi Garry & All—just made a reservation at the Days Inn. Barring pouring rain, I'll be there! Holly plans to ride too if it's not too cold. (And if she doesn't come, I'll have an extra bed for someone if needed.)
Looking forward to it!

I'm planning on riding up Saturday, and heading for home (southern NJ) after lunch on Sunday. I know there aren't any plans set in stone, but how do you folks see this event going?
Do lots of folks meet up at the Days Inn on Saturday?
Do groups get together for rides Saturday afternoon, Sunday before lunch, anything?
No plans?
I'd love to head out with a small group for some Tioga area riding.
Thanks!

Does anyone want to hit Denny's Saturday night? If I'm going to stuff myself silly id rather do it the night before with a beer and a hotel room to look forward to rather than a long ride home.

It's kinda tough trying to figure out what to do ride-wise. Last year, several of us left early and hit the road for an excellent ride along PA144 and other roads. We got all the way up to Hyner View past Renovo, where we turned around and headed back, making it to Denny's in time to go to Arby's for lunch!
I'd like to hang wth everyone...but I'd like to ride some of those great roads again too. So I guess if people want to do both, it means getting up for an EARLY and SHORT morning ride...followed by a break to hang out and do lunch.
Or maybe we could take the long way up there Saturday? Aww hell, I don't know!
Holly and I are leaving sometime Saturday morning from Harpers Ferry, WV, so if anyone wants to meet for the ride up (and has ideas for a good route from there) let me know!

Yep, we'll be at Day's Inn. We hope to make it there for dinner on Saturday. Maybe we'll eat dinner at the same place as last year, the food was good and cheap

Jay said something about being in Boston that weekend, not sure if it's work or pleasure.
I’m not doing any early morning Sunday rides this year, the 600 miles to get home will be plenty riding for me. This will be the first “street” ride of the season for me literality. I’ve only been riding dirt exclusively since December, my street bikes have been parked in the garage since last December, I want to take it easy

Kendenton,
I am thinking of going to the event and leaving early Saturday. If you would like to ride up together let me know. I never got to go to my WV trip. My Uncle died and we had his funeral last Monday. Plus the weather was horrid. Anyway, if you would like to meet up that is great. If you would like to go it alone, that is fine also. If so I will see you at the event. Now I just got to let the wife know about the trip.
I hope she is cool with it.

Yep---we're staying at the Days Inn. We'll probably roll in sometime around 3 or 4pm Saturday---in time for the "parking lot hang-out-and-bullshit" session.
Then yeah---we should all grab some dinner together.

My XT225 is not interstate friendly
It tops out around 60MPH. There is no way I could do 600 miles on it in one day, even on back roads where I could ride 55MPH, that's just too many miles. I've done 300 miles on it a few times and that was plenty.
It’s a dirt bike, it likes to go 20-30MPH though dirt

OK I just reserved a room for Saturday night. I would love to get some feedback for suggested routes from Southern New Jersey to Western PA. I REALLY do not feel like going to 476 to rt 80 and over. That is showing over 5 hours. I was thinking of staying west of all that and checking out some scenic roads. I know that it will take longer but that is fine. I like the challenge and the scenery. If anyone has time to list some ways to get me there I will start researching these roads and make a trip out of it. Gary I see that you have on your web site that 40 takes one out to St Louis. I guess I could take a look at that up towards 322 and head up that way. Regardless, I will see ya all Sat night and Sunday. Good on ya.

The weather in the NE has been OK but there haven't been a whole lot of decent riding days. I am so looking forward to riding 300 miles of back roads on the way out to Clearfield,,, and in the SUN!
And then there is Sunday. Temps in the high 60's, dry roads, sun, and warmth all the way home,,, 380 miles of smiles. I am sure my
face
cheeks will be a hurtin by the time I get home.

For people coming up from Harpers Ferry, VA, etc, I recommend the following roads/route:
- 219 north from I-68 (near Grantsville)
- 160 north from Berlin to Windber
- 56 west into Johnstown (slab, but short)
- 219 north to Grampian (starts out slab in J-town, then gets nice)
- 879 north? thru Curwensville to Clearfield

Tankhead - I'm heading out early Saturday AM from SJ as well. I'm planning on PA41 to 897 to 501 to 125 to Shamokin, 61 to 15 to I-80 around the Susquehanna river. Staying on I-80 to 144 area, and do some exploring. I can send you a Garmin Route if you like.

Actually, I think you kinda did that route last year. I remember you mentioning 160...
If you want something different, consider this 340 mile option:
- 50 west from Winchester thru Romney and Gormania to jct 72
- 72 north (along Cheat River) to jct 7 in Kingwood
- 7 west (short) to jct 26 in Kingwood
- 26 north thru Bruceton Mills into PA
- 26 becomes 281 in PA. Stay on 281 thru Confluence to jct 653 in New Lexington
- 653 west? (make a hard left at the store) to jct 381 in Normalville
- 381 north to end at jct 30 near Ligonier
- 30 west (short) to jct 711 in Ligonier
- 711 north to end at jct 403 near Seward
- 403 north to jct 286 in Clymer
- 286 east to end at jct 219
- 219 north to jct 879 in Grampian
- 879 north? to Clearfield

Hi Tom, enjoy the ride. Just remember there was around a foot of snow in the northeast PA area. Most of it should be melted, but there are alot of cinders on the roads from the storm. Ride safe. I probably will make a day trip out there sunday. Hope to see you then.

Roads around Clearfield should be cinder free. From about Williamsport and west, we just received rain this past week-end. Maybe a little snow on the mountain tops, but that's it. Keep in mind that trout season opened this past Saturday, and spring turkey season opens the 28th, so a lot of these two lane back roads are going to have a decent amount of traffic on, some of them just gawking around!

Hey Gary,
How are you doing? We plan to avoid the NE corner and ride south of Port Jervis. Hopefully the lower half of the state is clean, dry, ready for us. Our current plan is to cut out Sunday morning around 9:00 AM and ride a north south zig zag route back east to NY. We will miss the Burgerfest but won't have to slab it back.
I'll be looking for you on the Catskill run.

Yep, we'll be at Day's Inn. We hope to make it there for dinner on Saturday. Maybe we'll eat dinner at the same place as last year, the food was good and cheap
You and Holly going there again?
Jay said something about being in Boston that weekend, not sure if it's work or pleasure.
I’m not doing any early morning Sunday rides this year, the 600 miles to get home will be plenty riding for me. This will be the first “street” ride of the season for me literality. I’ve only been riding dirt exclusively since December, my street bikes have been parked in the garage since last December, I want to take it easy
Boy since you have become a ADVrider nutbar, you have gone soft on me
Where is the girl who did an Ironbutt on a stock 954 saddle
I'm having an intervention for you...Jay too...turn you back into hardcore sport touring freaks

I am leaving today at 3:45pm. I will be traveling to a town outside of Lancaster called Ronks, Pennsylvania. Staying overnight in a guest room. Hard getting a room for cheap because of the,,,,get this,,,,,,,Scrapple Fest this weekend.
. Anyway, I will be waking up early Saturday morning with the goal of being in Clearfield in the 12:00pm hour. Grab lunch and then do a loop that is part of Garry's "God's Country" loop. A little bit of 144, some 120, 44, Hyner overlook, and back into town at the Day's Inn for some food and maybe, just maybe a little drink. See y'all there.

Ahem.
(speaking in small voice)
Based on a couple reviews I read on the trip advisor of the Days Inn at Clearfield,
http://www.tripadvisor.com/Feeds-d102640-treviews.xml
and an eyewitness report from a riding bud who was just there a few minutes ago to check it out and who described it as "nasty", I've switched my res to the Comfort Inn directly adjacent.
But I
will
slouch on over Saturday eve to schmooze, especially if anyone's got beer.

Thanks for the heads-up. The Comfort is $30 more ($79 vs $49) than the Days though, so I'll deal with the nasty for one night.

Looks great!! Are you going to be on the fz1 or the trumpet, Doug? Very unlikely, but I just may meet you on the road depending on how the day works out.
I'm going to ride up for a burger after the BOTB in Murrysville and will meander home afterwards. It will probably be around two before I get there (rush should be well over by then) and most everyone will have left by then. Are Vince, James, or Fish coming?

I'll be on the Fizzer. I ordered soft side bags for the Trumpet, but they haven't come in yet or I would be tempted to take it.
Vince and James may come up and back on Sunday, no official word yet. Regrading Fishy, I haven't heard back from him. I think he's blowing us off. What a Guzzi snob!

Weather is looking as good as last year!
I have however, changed some plans-
My buddy on his blackbird will accompany me
to Carlisle on Sat. and we will ride to
Dennys from there on Sunday.
Possible roads are 74, 322,45,350
We will be having the buffalo wings,
same as last year.
I told work I would be having vision problems
on monday-
I cant see, me coming in to work.

Hey! I resemble that remark.
Sorry I've been incommunicado so much lately, I've been studying. I've got a big certification test coming up and have a month to learn about two years worth of crap.
f*&^ing exam cost about $1000.00 to take so I'd really, really, like to pass on the first shot. Anyway, I've been studying.
I do hope to make it to Clearfield on Sunday. I just need to get into the garage and fix the turn signal and lube the speedo cable and I'm set. After that, I'll ignore mowing the lawn to piss off the neighbors and I'm all set.

We stayed in the Days Inn last year (along with lots of other people)...and I don't remember it being "nasty," unless you're strictly accustomed to staying at the Ritz-Carlton!
(Or unless it's gotten a lot worse in 12 months!)

Sweet Fishy! I think James (RideWV) is going up and back on Sunday too. Vince is about 50/50 right now for Sunday.
You guys may want to touch base w/ one another. I'll PM you my cell phone number so you can give me an ETA on Sunday. I'll try to wait and eat a Burger w/ you.
I'm going up tomorrow so I can ride some of the nice roads north of Clearfield and have a few beers w/ the other ST.N people tomorrow night.

I just ordered a Belly buster over the phone. I told them to prepare it for Noon on Sunday. They told me that someone else has also ordered a BB for noon. Who's the bastid? Fess up! My money is on SWRiverstone.
In either case, I doubt anyone will go hungry because I welcome anyone to mooch off my plate. But please wait till after my belt buckle explodes and lodges itself into the wall like a throwing star.

I had something come up last night and due to a significant lack of sleep I'm in no condition to ride. Hopefully things will work out today and I can hang with everyone tomorrow and day trip it. This sucks but I guess that life sometimes. Hope everyone is having fun and keep the rubber side down.
