So you're voting for "appeal to curmudgeons"?

Are curmudgeons the only types of people who expect professionalism from top execs?

In the mean time, BMW, the undisputed adventure bike king of the hill, is talking about a new, (guess what?).......*ST.* This news, along with the new VFR, continues to confirm my belief that Ducati took a wrong turn with this 4 in 1 bike rather than offering a range of specific models for specific duties. Seriously, how many peeps out there think an all in one computer, TV, stereo and printer is a good idea? Headscratch

I want a new Ducati ST, not this vegamatic imposter: "I curmudgeon."  Lol

Yeah, I'm thinking you're reading too much into the marketing campaign...

For myself, I have the Concours 14 that *has the power*, though it's also a fat pig. I can overlook the 'fat pig' aspects because of the power and handling at speed. Still, I also have the big 'Strom. I like the Suzuki better on bumpy backroads, but it's seriously lacking on top-end speeds for the open road (it tops out at around 120 - 140 indicated and it's kinda scarey handleing if you run it out to the top like that...

Bottom line, the Multi-12 is about 50 pounds lighter than the big 'Strom and has 50 more HP. It's close to 250 pound lighter than the C-14 and has nearly the same HP. For the moment in the market, there is really nothing that compares for someone that loves the Adventure-Tourer ergos + the serious HP/Torque 'nearing' the Super-Sport realm.

And this is not to confuse with anybody that is buying this bike because they think it will be good 'off-road'. I'm buying this bike because of the ergos and suspension, that I will truely enjoy for 'road-riding'. I also believe that any that buy into the Super-Sport motos with even *more* HP, can not even touch the full potential on a typical bumpy-ass backroad (awesome on the track though). The Multi-12 is a meld of Power and Backroads prowess in my mind...

No one is buying this motorcycle as a dirt bike    --   But when your exploring New England, or are out in the desert,
or riding the coast of Big Sur and want to explore Bixby Canyon --- You just do it.  Do you think a Kawasaki 14 or a Honda VFR is going to do that.

I want a light. agile, power bike that can carry 2 people and luggage in comfort, with a sit up dirt bike riding posture
which I always found to be most comfortable, and high wide bars.

What is your choice?    I don't want a Fat pig motorcycle anymore.  As soon as I saw this bike I knew.

I just can't understand how someone can say it is ugly, especially someone who has the previous model Multistrada
with that scooter front end.  It is just a feminine looking bike and dealers have been complaining about the looks to
Ducati since its introduction, at least according to my dealer.

Define "off road."

I don't see many GSs trail riding in the deep woods.  Most of them are used on gravel/dirt/forest "roads" which is exactly how the Multistrada is being marketed...as a "road enduro."  People who think it is being marketed as (or actually IS) a trail/mx/dirt bike need to stop eating mushrooms. Lol

I'm just repeating what I saw on that Discovery HD show on BMW.  The GS was also a parts bin bike.   Lol

Personally I'm getting certain bills taken care of so there isn't an issue with the Mrs. in getting this bike.  It means some less racing for me this year....but...can put a price on satisfaction! (well you can...its $19,999 +tax + licensing MSRP   Lol)

he pronounces the suspension Ohlinns, instead of Ohleens; he states there were 2 generations of STs when in fact there were 5 iterations. Rolleyes Sorry, I just don't get how he "fits" in with the image of Ducati.  Thumbsdown

Ohlins, being Swedish, would be pronounced Ooor-lins. May be he fits 'cos he can pronounce Ducati correctly and not slip into that
hideous Do-car-tee that Nicky Hayden favours.

Is it a big improvement?  Hell yes.

Is it beautiful?  Hell no.

I'd have to see it in person, but IMO the new Multi is not a good looking bike.  Which may be a good thing, because every other aspect of it is awesome, and the looks alone might be enough to save me 20 thousand bucks  Lol

Ha, I keep coming back to this thread, because I have nothing better to do while I await my butter-face new ride.

Yeah, she's slim and trim and has the HP to go the distance. So what, she has a big nose? I can't see that while I'm riding her from behind.

Dude, you're riding a fat chick. I understand some folks go for that, but you will still be wasted in the twisties if my butter-face gets you in her sights...   Twofinger  Lol

Edited to add:

Hey Dave R,

When is the Ducati Dealer Meet happening? I'm thinking it's soon and after which will come any meaningful updates...

She may be a big girl, but she's pretty good looking.  And besides, she's Japanese... she's expected to be somewhat plain.  Your expensive Eye-Talian is expected to be beautiful, and there's a big letdown there.

Every other aspect is spot-on with the new Multi.  I could deal with the look (and really, IMO it's just the ugly front end, the rest looks fine) for 10-15 grand, but I'd want the full S Touring model, and if I'm going to drop 20 grand on a bike it had better be perfect in every way.  I just wish Ducati had made it look like a proper ST bike, and not like an ADV bike.

No meeting for 2010 products this year  Sad   We were just kept in the dark like the rest of the World until EICMA..  Ducati offered dealers some online tutorials to make sure they were up to speed.  I am told there will be another "buzz" on the new MTS to be announced this month..

 Headscratch

Still trying to figure out why people like to focus on the perceived adventure aspects of this bike and not the sport-touring aspects.  It's pretty clear that it's a sport-tourer first and an "adventure" bike second.  Not unlike the GS (non-GSA).

I think it's obvious that ST riding is the primary purpose.  I just wish it was styled more along those lines.  People (read - me) like to focus on the minor ADV aspects because it detracts from the attraction of a pure ST bike.  For me, it's strictly the appearance - I don't care if the traction control has an "enduro" mode that I'll never use.  I just really, really dislike the ADV front end treatment and feel that when I'm spending that much on a bike, it not only needs to be a great bike, but it's gotta make me turn around and stare at it when I get off the bike.  The new Multi doesn't do that for me.

Okay, I see what you mean.  I actually like the looks and like the added option of being able to blast down a PNW logging road if I should happen to hit a dead end. Bigok  Sure, the vast majority of the time I would ride it on the pavement, but if I hit a dead end on the 150 lb heavier FJR I'd mostly likely turn around with my tail between my legs. Bigsmile

"Proper" ST bikes thankfully have evolved.
This MS12 carries as much as the FJR, but weighs much much less, makes more powah, has better suspension/brakes/handling etc.
Using a chain drive instead of shaft reduces the unsprung weight, therefore allowing better suspension performance.

What's not 'proper' about it? That it's not big and heavy? Boring looking?  I think it looks edgy, futuristic and great.  Ducati did not want to make a bike that looked like an 1198 on stilts with high handlebars.  They wanted to define it's look.
They know what they're doing.
