I interested to see exactly how the motor was retuned.  Also would hope that some de-tuning would allow longer service intervals.

Doesn't look too bad, I'll wait to see it in person to make final judgement.

Detuning the motor would have no relevance on the maint interval. It's going to be 7500mi just like every other Duc made. It's valves twice a year (according to schedule) and belts once a year. Typically your valves will stay in spec once you get past the first service or two though (at least that's been my experience).

The bike doesn't look any worse in the photos than the other utilitarian bikes it's competing with (Tiger, Uly, SM-T, etc). I'm disappointed that it's not drop dead sexy though. Ducati gets the looks right on so many other bikes, why not the MTS? Can it be that hard to put a 5 gallon tank on a Hypermotard? I suspect the 1198-based engine is going to be the big differentiator in the riding experience. That and the suspension on the (expected) "S" version.

GS/Adv competitor? Not really. Granted that many GS/Adv riders never get their bike dirty, but the new MTS isn't an option for those that do.

This is part of what's fueling such speculation:

Considering it's shod with street rubber, I think it's more likely they're doing some sort of accelerated wear & tear testing.  *shrug*

They certainly are not "adventure" bike type "strong box" cases, that's for sure. They are styled like ST bike cases, and the bike has forged wheels as well. As an adventure bike, it's as big a poser as the original Multi, but then again, Ducati never intended the original Multi to be an adventure bike, it was clearly marketed as a paved road sport bike of a different nature. So this is another, multiple road sport bike, but NOT a trailie. Way to "city slick" to be considered a trailie IMO. I'm still reserving judgement until I see the bike in its entirety. I can understand how some people might say they don't care about the way it looks, but I'm not one of them. I care about how things look. Fat chicks might be great in bed, but not in my bed. Smile

Check that site now - more info http://www.multistrada.ducati.com/jspmulti/index.jsp?lang=en

Ducati Traction Control and Electronic Suspension Adjustment available.  There are four 'modes(?)' being shown - sport, urban, enduro, and touring.  Enduro means Scoprion Sync tires and a sump guard.  On the spec pages, there are three models - Standard, S - Sport with Ohlins and Traction Control, and Touring, which is Sport with Panniers, heated grips and hugger.

The touring model has electronically adjustable suspension. Nice. I think they have a winner on their hands!

With the ESA and Traction Control, and ABS, they are matching the BMW GS for its features.

Dry weight listed is 417 lb

20 liter gas tank is 5.3 gallons, same as the Tiger

Claimed 150 HP puts it as the most powerful in its class, as predicted

Yes, I think it's a winner, too.

The only downside is the maint interval which could potentially cost them some sales.

But, if I were in the market for an upright seated, go anywhere bike, then I'd look really long and hard at this bike. I mean it really comes with all of the goodies. Traction control is going to really kick ass on this bike too if it's anything like the 1198. I'm excited to see this bike in the flesh.

Aside from the looks, I think Ducati hit a grand slam here. Damn. Gotta say I'm impressed. Wonder what an "S" model with luggage, Termis, ECU, etc is going to cost?

I now have one bike on my "short list" for the day when I decide to sell the KTM. Probably not next season, but 2011 is a possibility after this new MTS has a year to prove it's reliability/etc. The 1000cc Multistrada "S" was on the old short list (beaten by the KTM mostly on ergos and looks).

http://news.motorbiker.org/blogs.nsf/dx/eicma2009-ducati-multistrada-1200-motorcycle---omg.htm

So you can select from the Urban, Enduro, Tour, or Sport modes right from the handlebar, and the power and suspension adapts accordingly.

Also it has a hands-free ignition (that can be overrode by a PIN code) and ride-by-wire throttle.  They also say the clutch is servo-controlled, making for a very light clutch.  And that this blonde is standard equipment!

I'd imagine that like the BMW GS, the looks will grow on people.  As already documented photographically in this thread, there's an entire breed of bikes with similar geometry (and beaks) that didn't exist 10 years ago (well, aside from the GS itself).

Ok, so I guess I'm saying I do like the looks -- from what I can see in the photos anyway.  Smile

Evidently I'm getting old, but I think an MTS1200 would get more use than the 1098 in my garage.

I wonder if the nose/beak (the air intakes) would look better if painted to match the bike? Might have to have a go at a Photochop this evening.
