Brilliant!

I know it's standard on the 2010 model but my new 09 was lacking.  holy crap what a difference!  The heat before wasn't a big negative for me, i don't wine that much about it since i figure my legs are a half inch from exploding gasoline and it's a part of the experience, but man, this thing made such a difference.  don't feel anywhere near as much heat as before, actually almost nothing at all.  well worth the $.  Might shave down the scoop out front though, it protrudes a bit and messes with the "aesthetic" of the bike (if it ever had one).  Just doesn't flow with the lines of the bike as well as i'd like.

overall...  Bigok Bigok

Steve -- while I'm a big fan of Buells in general, and the Uly specifically

it protrudes a bit and messes with the "aesthetic" of the bike (if it ever had one).  Just doesn't flow with the lines of the bike as well as i'd like.

er, it's a Uly -- which aesthetic is that ;-}

I just dont like that the scoop extends forward of the front cylinder.  makes it look like it doesn't belong and i can't see any use for it being as long as it is.  It's an air scoop, it's not like lengthening it is going to grab more air (unless they're relying on crosswinds).

i know it has no aesthetic, being a uly and all, it's just kind of like seeing a fiddler crab, kind of unbalanced.

how easy does it install and how hard would it be to remove it again.  My Uly scorched my leg this summer, but I am becoming down right fond of the extra heat now the temps are starting to drop.

Shrug  dealer put it on, i'm less and less inclined to do things myself since i bought the classic car, it's my primary tinkering project.

I can't imagine it'd be terribly difficult.  dealer charged me 2 hrs which i'm sure is double what it actually takes.  looks like they have to pull the pipes to put on the attached shield and then just bolt up the scoop.  factor in 5 minutes for the ECM remap (fan didn't kick on at all except at lights) and bam, all done.  didn't have to expend a drop of sweat.

Trust me, it takes that long to install.  The entire underpan needs to be removed.  It is somewhat of a pain.

So what your saying is that it's a good winter project worthy of say, 4 or 5 beers?

Yeah and make sure you have some tools.  I had one of the first batches sent out and there was some things that could have been done better with the fit.  Apparently some things were changed after that, not sure since I haven't seen any others.  There is a very long thread on this on BadWeb in the Uly forum.

It can be a two-part project The time killer, as mentioned, is removing the entire battery holder from the bike. This is necessary because you put a piece of plastic in there that help redirect the hot air from the engine down and not up under the seat. Of course this hot air came in handy during the 3 weeks of winter we have here in Texas. During the other 49 weeks, that warm seat was most unwelcome. Strange as it seems, that $4 worth of plastic actually works. The big mystery to me is the air scoop and heat shield, it's suppose to redirect air to the back cylinder head and help cool the rear cylinder so the fan doesn't run as much or as long. I'm not convinced it really helps as much as a lot of people claim it does. But then again, it's still getting in the 80's here (summer for a bunch of people who frequent the board from northern climates), when the temperatures are in the 90's and 100's (we only had 68 days of 100 degree weather this past year), I'm not convinced it's going to make the fan run less like people talk about. Even with the 80 degree days, the fan runs a lot, but again, this is a summer high in a lot of areas, so maybe it will work better in other parts of the country. It does seem to take some of the heat off your inner right thigh, and that's extremely important.

There is one final part of this update, on '08 and '09 Ulys, there is an update to the fuel mapping that is suppose to help. I'm not sure why it's not updated on the '06 and '07 Ulys, but for whatever reason Buell didn't think it was important. Different individuals have stated that their dealer either charged them, or didn't charge them for the update, so if you have an '08 or '09 that might also make more of a difference. I have the '07 model and so no new mapping is available for my bike.

The entire project from start to finish took 3 hours, but we had three Ulys doing the project at the same time in my driveway, so we were helping each other out as we went along. Photos: http://www.flickr.com/photos/82683679@N00/sets/72157622617248128/

Good luck!

the new engine mapping takes the bike's speed into consideration rather than just head temperature.  Not sure why the older bikes didn't get the treatment either, but my fan barely runs now.

any of those tx riders on the board want to do a meet n eat out in SA or austin?

Compared to rest of its market niche peers such as theDuc MS/SP (esp. the Strata Puka), and various fuglified BMWs, its got quite nice, and conservative aesthetics.
