From Motorcycle Daily:

Quote
After riding high-powered superbikes around Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca all day, the last thing I want to do is sit at my computer and write a teaser, but it was an exciting event and I want to whet your appetites a little for a full feature next week. Today, KTM officially announced five new or redesigned street models, and I had a chance to ride four of them.

Read the rest at the link.  They rode the 990 SM-T at Laguna Seca.  You know what that means, right?  Bigok

For the 07 and beyond Super Dukes (larger tank from factory in 07+), you can get 180-200 miles per tank depending on your throttle hand.   Lol

Page 34 of the brochure says the soft bags shown on the SMT are standard equipment.  I hope they are waterproof and good quality.  The RC8R and new SMR look like great fun bikes but the SMT would be the KTM for me.

I am interested in KTM's plans to dominate the US street scene.  While the new Duc MTS1200 is a techno-marvel, I find myself very attracted to the SMT for it being a more basic bike.

I just wish KTM would show their pricing and info on their website.  If they are planning to dominate the US street market, they will need some sharper pricing, and not to mention that they only make one middle-sized street bike that isn't specifically an enduro or SM.

The only reasons I can think of to buy a SMT now over the Multistrada 1200 are due to concerns over Ducati maintenance costs and unknown reliability and lack of aftermarket support due to it being a brand-new model. However the SuperDuke is great and came in 1st in a Motorcycle Consumer News comparison between it, the Ducati Streetfighter S, Aprilia Tuono Factory, and Speed Triple.

I'm not sure why the 2010 SD and SD-R are not listed yet.  And, I suppose we'll have to wait a bit more for the SM and RC8-R prices.   Sad

I'd really like a Super Duke 990 or Supermoto SMT, but aren't valve intervals 8.5k miles?  Also, how many hours of labor are those adjustments?

Just trying to get a feel for KTM maintenance costs (I don't do my own maintenance)

10K mile (15K km) intervals on valves for the LC8 engines. Shim under bucket I believe.

That's a bite - no rain covers or locks either?   Headscratch  I am excited by the potential performance of the SMT, but even with your pic there, I am left a little cold.  The matte-black plastic looks cheap to me.

LC8 motors also need a bit more time to change the oil.  In previous STN discussions, it was said to be perhaps a 2hr job until all is done.

There are KTM hard luggage options and suspect there will be aftermarket versions too.   Bigok

The Adventure is the only one that takes up to 2 hours because you have to remove one of the two fuel tanks to access one of the two oil screens.  It only takes me 40-45 minutes on the Super Duke and I suspect that's how long it would take me on the SM-T.

And though I like to do my own oil changes, I did have the dealer change it for me once on the Super Duke and they didn't charge me more than their started oil change price of $25 for the labor (+ materials used).  YMMV.

Thanks for the clarification on the oil changes, Doug.  Does the Duke have the extra screens/filters like the Adv?

I know there are hard cases available for the SMT.  My comment is that, if they are going to include cases with the bike (as indicated in the brochure), it would be nice if they were rain tight and lockable.  What other bike, let alone a touring model, comes with soft luggage?

Good point on the soft luggage which comes with the bike.

On the oil change, all LC8s have the two screens.  One is located at the bottom of the motor while the other is located in plumbing between the motor and the oil reservoir.  This in-line filter is the one which makes the Adventure a PIA to change oil.  Other than that one screen, you could change the oil in the Adventure w/o removing the gas tank.

The oil change on my SMR is easy. Not as easy as a single drain plug and a spin-on filter, but easily done in way under an hour. Everything is easily accessible.

Two drain bolts (oil tank and engine)

Two bolts for the oil filter (cartridge paper thing, about $15).

I used to clean the screens every change, but now it's more like every other time. Stopped finding anything on them after the first few oil changes. Now at 23K miles. Cleaning the screens would add maybe 15 minutes total if you took your time.

I can't tell if the regular SM is coming or not -- I've had a lust for an SM bike for a while, and I like the taller seat, etc, on the regular model.

If it's comparably priced to the Multistrada, though, that's a hard call..

I like this 990 SM (long travel suspension standard) - T about 8 gajillion times better than the new Ducati Multstrada Monstrosity edition (MonstrosiStrada?). As far as the luggage, this bike tells me to keep it lean; saddle bags and a waterproof duffel at most. If I buy a real road bike again, this is what I would want, unless I pick up a lightly used 950sm for cheap.

So, in an e-newsletter from KTM talking about new models, the left margin was a string of pictures with 2010 KTMs.  The attached was second bike down but there was no mention of it in my letter.

It looks like some sort of a wicked street thumper.

(sorry, but this is all the larger the image really is)

It's a 125 concept bike.  I think it's called the "stunt" much like the larger 690 version they did a year (or two) ago...

I hear that. The MTS is cool, with its trellis frame, twin thumper, livable riding position, and beautiful finish. But the KTM has most of that, it doesn't have the questionable snout or the Desmo to deal with.

It will be interesting to see if/how the $6K difference between it and a Multistrada 1200 "S" Touring shakes out. Put hard bags on the KTM for $XXX. Is the WP suspension as good as Ohlins OEM stuff? No ABS on the KTM. Is traction control needed with the lower power output of the 990? Lots to consider if you spending that kind of money. $6K will buy a lot of farkles, gas and gear...

Many compelling points to consider.  For me it's much more complex  --> The SM-T  is [Fat-bastard] dead sexy [/Fat-bastard]!

I'm not sure this has been posted here yet, but KTM has "realigned" their US streetbike pricing according to the article below.  Click on the pic of the bike for the pricing.

http://motorcycles.about.com/od/manufacturerlineups/ig/2010-KTM-Buyer-s-Guide/?nl=1

SMT is still $13,998

Basic RC8 is now $16,498!  This is a nice $3k drop, the basic RC8 was $19,498 in 2009.  Now the special edition R is in that price range, with the special edition Red Bull and Akropovic versions for $23,998

The 2010 KTM 990 Adventure is priced at $14,898- - $100 less than the 990 Adventure R.

KTMs would be more appealing to me if they made their streetbikes without all of the corporate orange color. What have they got against a nice blue, green, red, all black, silver, white, copper or yellow bike? I just don't like orange but I do like their bikes.

KTM not having orange on it would be WRONG!

Color choices are not KTM's forte.  And the appearance of the bikes seems to be love it or leave it.

What you're really buying in a KTM is the fun / giggle / excitement factor.     Bigok
