The "Suddenly, I am too old? WTF?" thread got me thinking about what I would give up for someone I loved. Me personally, I wouldn't give up a damn thing because the love of my life wants me too. One exeption would be if it was something destructive: Excessive drinking, drugs abuse, WOW, etc... Non of which I do by the way.

I'm open to discussion on anything. And I'm usually pretty good as being both sides of any discussion, no matter how hard I may dig into my given position on it.

I chose the damn good reason option.  The way a look at it, marriage is about compromise, give and take.  So, when issues come up you need to be flexible and sometimes that means taking one for the team.  However, motorcycling is on my list of untouchable things that I will not give up.  This was something that I also took part in before they met me, so I can't be expected to give up something that's that important to me.  I guess coming from a single guy's perspective, this will just be a part of my screening process.  I'm just going to be crystal clear that there are some things that I can let go, and some that I can't.  This one I can't.  I'd be willing to limit my riding depending on family issues (ie. kids, multiple family gatherings coming up, etc.) but under no circumstances will I give it up.

Simple fact is my wife would never ask me to give up riding, or anything else I am passionate about.  She loves me for who I am and accepts that my interests are part of what makes me who I am.  Some may say "well if you really love her then you'd give up anything for her".  Yes, I would give up anything for her sake, but I would not give up anything simply because she asked me to.  I did not fall in love with a woman who would ask me to do that sort of thing.  If she ever did, then it would probably be a wake-up call to me that she is not the same woman I fell in love with.

Of course, the issue is made even more moot by the fact that she encourages my riding, and as soon as we have the money I'm going to have to buy her a Ducati.  It's cheaper than the Bugatti she wants.

My personality is one that does not respond well to ultimatums ... but supposing that my riding or say another riding injury pushed my wife to the point of her saying " I can no longer support what you are doing and if you continue, I may have to question my ability to stay in this relationship with you."

I would do my best to accommodate her needs and stop riding. We have a great partnership, a great kid and such a good life as a result of that partnership inclusive of compromise and adjusted expectations on both our parts. Motorcycles are a big part of my life ... but only a part.

There is no woman who could be "the love of my life" if she didn't love me for me.  "Me" is already a motorcyclist, it's not just something I do, it's part of who and what I am.

I don't really see it as something to be "given up" in the name of love.  What if she wanted you to give up all forms of mechanical transportation out of fear for your safety?  Or modern medicine for religious reasons?  Or any of a million other things that are commonplace to most and anathema to a few.  Would you, could you give up telecommunications or indoor plumbing for love?  Is it really love if you have to change yourself into someone else to get it?

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for personal growth and such.  But I suspect that we all have stuff in way more need of changing than what we drive.

In my case, this was not just an academic question.

I rode in high school and my first wife knew it and said nothing.  As soon as we got married, motorcycles were non-gratis.  I found this out when we were in the car going home after looking at a new bike.  She through a royal fit, even kicking in the dash of my AMC Gremlin (yeah, I had one).

I got a used Kaw Z1 a couple of years later while stationed in Okinawa without asking first.  From that point on, I never let the garage be bike-less.

The 1st wife is now an ex, and my 2nd wife is more understanding, but even with her, there are still some major motorcycle-related fights.

I'm a very open minded guy and willing to listen to both sides of an argument. But..... I do not condone giving up something you (or her) loves "just because", like I voted, it has to be a damn good reason.

This issue is something that came up in the last parts of my first marriage. I had given up riding dirtbikes for 7 years because of my living circumstances. When I got back into it I did it one day a weekend for a while because I really missed it, you know the big surge that happens when you are excited about an activity. She had a problem with that and well...... she's not around anymore. I don't ride that much anymore as I've worked it out of my system back to a "normal" level. If she'd been willing to see it through maybe things would be different today.

The only time I think a person should stop something if asked is if it's truly destructive to themselves or others such as substance abuse, gambling addictions, abusive behavior, that sort of thing. One lady I was dating asked me "would you give up your friends for me?" My answer was "WTF are you thinking?" She didn't last very long.

What is best is to try to get the significant other involved in the hobby or interest you love, or second best, get her/him involved in an interest of their own. There are pros & cons to each but the both of you sharing an interest is by far the best and can really bring you closer together. My second wife and I shared a love of personal watercraft and that really helped our marriage which lasted 13 years. At least it ended on good terms and we're still friends and business partners. My current girlfriend knows all my hobbies and interests and also shares an interest in many of them. That's where I'm starting from this time this time around.

I had to go with Pie.  It took 6 years of working the subject (with the help of friends) before I had "permission" to buy a bike again.  I had a bike for a few years well before we met / married and I know she is not always comfortable with me riding.  Really hit home when a close friend had a bad crash this summer.  Would I give it up, I don't know therefore "Pie".  I love the ride, the culture, the relaxation it gives me and I love my wife.  Tough decision, hope she never asks and I never give her a reason to.

We have a 10 day vacation planned in Florida next month and she bought only one plane ticket since I mentioned I was considering riding there from New York.  That turned into a month long trip for me while she flies back to work.  

I also love that she's not a passenger, she rides her own.  Her' Yamaha has over 30,000 miles on it.  Maybe it's time for her to have a new one.

I gave up riding for a number of years for my last wife. Sadly I was widowed last year, and have since remarried to a lady who rides and has 2 bikes. If she told me to quit, i would have her admitted to a psych hospital!

Would you quit riding motorcycles or another love of yours if the love of your life said "It's me or the bike"?

I had a hard time deciding between "other" and "pie"  

Because it's highly unlikely that "It's me or the bike" will ever come up in discussion. Considering, before we were married, my girl friend made the down payment on a bike I wanted after 37 years of marraige and a couple of dozen bikes.... there are 2 very nice bikes in the garage now.... I never catch any flak when I buy gear or accessories.... she said I can't ever sell the Thunderbird Sport....and I have standing "permission" to buy a R90S whenever I find one I like (but it has to be the gray-smoke, cannot be the yellow)... of course I had to get her a MX5 Miata in the bargain....

new g/f just got her endorsement so that she can more fully share this aspect of my life with me. that was entirely her choice. we pick up her new/used 2006 Shadow Spirit 1100 tomorrow. she rocks!

If your SO really loves you she'll at least try to see it your way. My wife was typical big city girl. Never rode on the back of a motorcycle, thought hunting and guns were horrible and generally wasn't exposed much to those things (her first husband was a sense of entitlement, spoiled pansy-ass that would rather play WOW then treat his woman with respect but that is a story for another thread). Along came me and even though she doesn't eat wild game (yet) she understands hunting, gun ownership and really likes rides on the bike. If'n your SO has a problem with what you love and won't at least be open to the reason you do what you do they should be shown the door. Just my .02

Unless I was physically or mentally incapable of riding, the only thing that could probably get me to stop would be if I could afford a plane and to fly it as much as I can currently ride my bikes.

Unlike most motorcycle are one of the things i enjoy .
so if given a damn good reason like i mess up and end up in hospitals jacked up regularly and we have a baby and toddler and she says take a few yrs off as they need there DAD .i might .

this question is quite a contradition in that you claim if she is love of your life so you assume she love only parts of your life and not whole...how can someone pick and choose what one loves in a person and then claim its the love of your life.Just saying i hated the vstrom even though i put 10k in a year and sold it in fall as the snow starter falling . We just got married a month ago. She hated the whole no bike period over holidays and everyone gave the whole we understand your wife made you do it look.She flipped out lol. anyway she dragged my lazy ass to a dealer and told me today you buy a bike in spring or else forget coming home 5 yrs ago.

Anyway , she just told me last month as we are adding a 2 car garage that i should think about adding a cruiser ,so she can also share it with me to ride /get a licence next year .we have a 8 month old and 4yr old. it goes both ways as i worry with little kids but i know she enjoyed it when she rode her virago for years . she would get a permit in spring and ride all summer. not sure why she never went to get a licence and kept doing this for years when she was younger.

a new development for me as proof i have an awesome wife...  i sold my FJR back in Mar 2011 because of not riding much, not liking the roads, work, finances, new baby girls....  well, last month, my wife surprised me by searching for, setting up the deal, and driving me to the dealer to pick up my new bike!!!!    oh yeah, i must definitely do NOT have to worry about my Love asking me to sell.

I mentioned that perhaps I should sell my 300 as I never seem to get to ride anymore. My Brides reply: "What? are you retarded?? you love dirtbiking, quit acting like an idiot!"

The funny thing is she didn't request I don't ride. Just that I don't take vacations without her. She's built up some resentment over the years as I go on my multi-week rides without her. A couple of years back I told her to make plans then, it's not like I get on the bike and don't come back for two weeks. I do lots of planning.

So last year we went to Prague for a week or so of touring and then we drove the Prius to Jasper/Banff to camp and stay in a youth hostel (fun, let me say).

This year I'm riding 8,000 miles and will meet her for four days in Florida on the beach before heading home.

So if she said "no more riding", we'd be over. If I see there's a problem (and I can be dense), I'll voluntarily give up some aspect in the interests of family harmony. I might even try to give it up (as long as I'm making the sacrifice), but I don't think it'll happen based on recent events
