I didn't see them the last time I looked but Heli offers risers (well, I guess new clip-ons) for the new model R1 now.  2 inches taller, 1/4 inch-1 inch adjustable rearward.  I don't own an R1 but have said I'd love a new '09 if I could get risers for it, and the Heli risers make a substantial enough change that I'd seriously consider an R1 at this point.  My dealer has several new '09s (white with red seats/trim, please!) in stock and I can get a nice deal on one.

I've done few laps on the 2009 R1, but no street riding.  I got to tell the sound that engine is awesome.  It also pulls incredibly well  Burnout
I literally pulled back into the pits after 2 laps (that's all that was permitted) laughing and giggling inside my helmet.  I'm way past having a liter bike as my only ride and I'm not even sure I want one as my 2nd bike any more. BUT... if I was going to pick a liter bike, I would consider this to be on the VERY Short Short list.  The only other 2 I would consider I haven't even ridden (RSV4 & 1198S)

If it floats your boat, I think you should pursue it!  Helibars and a custom seat and you might do just fine.  I used to tour on my 2000 R1, it wasn't bad... but I was a little tougher back then.....

Heli emailed me pics, and the difference looks substantial.  I think insurance on an R1 would murder me, but I can get a great deal on a leftover '09 and I've got the money to do it.  I'm holding out to see what the new FZ8 is all about, and whether it'll come stateside.  This is certainly a great time for a great deal on leftover bikes, though!
