Streets & Trips now exports to GPX
«

I just found on the Garmin forum that S&T 2010 will export to GPX format which means it can be opened in Mapsource. This is the link and part of the post :
https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?t=1162
" Streets&Trips 2010 has GPX file import and export. You can use it to exchange waypoints and routes with any device or program that supports GPX. It's pretty basic but it works quite well. It's a really great tool for those who like to do complex trip planning in Streets and then use, say, a Garmin handheld or personal navigation device (PND) for navigation.
Limitations: - when Streets exports a route it does not export the full route. It exports only the route points (
). So it will export the Start, Stops and End points in the GPX file. But it will not export all the turn by turn data that, say, Mapsource will include when exporting a route. So when you import the route file into, say, a Garmin PND or handheld you will have to tell it to recalculate the route before you can use it.
In the reverse direction, if you import a route file into Streets, it will only import the route points but none of the turn by turn data (the other data doesn't cause it any problem .. it simply ignores it). So you will have to recalculate the route in Streets before you can use it.
You can also transfer waypoints or a route directly into a Garmin device if it is connected to the computer. But you also have to be connected to the internet at the same time for it to work. The direct transfer feature uses an online function from MSN Direct. It's not built into Streets. "

I've been considering getting S&T, but was wondering if it was worth it. So far, I'm not sold. I don't have a GPS for the VFR yet, but I'm planning on getting a Zumo 550 before Spring.

A lot of riders (me included) like to use S&T for route planning even if you don't have a GPS. I used it for 5 years before I got my first GPS. Some Garmin GPS's come with a waypoint program - my Garmin V and Quest came with Mapsource. Works great but it's not as fast as S&T. Each has its strengths & weaknesses.
The trick is is not having to plan your route on S&T and then re-enter all of your waypoints into Mapsource in order to get them downloaded to your GPS. That double entry problem now seems to be over. That is a huge time saver, or so it appears.

For every big trip I plan, I plot it in S&T first then manually plot it out in Mapsource to get it to my GPS. I like how MS includes est turn by turn times so you can plan when you should start looking for hotels. There's nothing more frustrating then being 100 miles for the closest hotel after a 9-10 hour day on the bike.

On of the other posts in the OP's link says,
Quote
Just confirming about using the 2010 version of MS Streets and Trips to create (export) to a GPX file. I've done this and loaded the GPX file into a ZUMO 550. As a further test, I've loaded the GPX file into Mapsource and (after clicking on the route properties) click on recalculate and the route hugs the roads properly. Once in Mapsource a GDB file can be saved
So it appears if done correctly the entire route can be replicated in MapSource fairly easily.

Has anyone used the Delorme Street Atlas software? Wondering how it compares with Streets and Trips.

Ken, I'd really like to keep this thread to the topic in the subject line. Nothing to do with mapping program comparisons.
Thanks.

One more time please:
I setting here with my new to me 2820, a Texas Tour of Honor Route plotted in MS Maps and Streets.
I export the Data to TOH.Gpx. Ok it is there
Now I go to the 2820 and open it in the USB Mass Storage mode and, and, and......
Well ok, it isn't an mp3, and it's not an Audible, and it I look at Garmin, its not the RemostSW or Voice..wtfo.
I can't find the elusive "export to gps" button on the S & T. I am using the Trial version just to check it out....
So what do it mean?
Cut and Paste the TOH data points into Mapsource.
So many tricks for an old dog.

"Export to GPX file" is under the "Data" drop down menu - there is no button for it.

You have to open the GPX file in the Garmin MapSource program, then tell it to recalculate the route, then download it to your GPS.

I just save the gpx file to /garmin/gpx right on the device. The load the custom route from the file.

You can get last years program for a substantial discount. I get mine from Amazon. Highways don't change all that much all that often.
